drivebyacct··on An Android User’s Take On Yesterday’s iPhone News
I don't know why you feel that my post is in anyway attacking you or the scenario that you've repeated.
drivebyacct··on An Android User’s Take On Yesterday’s iPhone News
Oh I didn't mean to imply that we can't have both. I completely hope that Matias (the UI/UX guy from Palm that everyone juices over) can come in and beautify android.

Feel free to ignore my criticism's of Facetime. I feel completely ignorant.

Thanks for the heads up.

You act as if "first movers" ever don't get screwed by Apple. I understand that technology is constantly evolving and that by time I buy a phone, a better one is being produced, but I can't shake the feeling that Apple schedules their releases and features in ways that maximize their revenue. I suppose I can't really blame them for that. It just makes the whole thing seem less "magical" the way some act like Apple is just the most innovative and new company in the whole wide world.

Also, I still can't help but laugh at this moniker of the "post PC era". The rest of us are still doing real work in Windows, Mac, Linux and the smartphone/tablets are accessories.

Apple saying their going to stop ruling the AppStore like a dictatorship and introducing an open-protocol voice chat that they could champion? It would definitely get a second look from me.

A higher density screen that is only slightly better than current Android phones, a lack luster multitasking architechture, video chat that ONLY works with other iPhone 4 users... not "game changing" in my opinion.

Facetime is the one that just bugs me. What is Jobs thinking? Why would you not call it iChat and allow it to work with desktop-iChat? Even then it would still be a joke. With Qik, any Android phone, or more important any phone period has the ability to communicate with other Qik users regardless of their phone. How does he expect Facetime to take off? Apple spearheading an open video chat platform would be ... cool. I still am not sure I would jump to the word "revolutionary".

Or is it just a sale gimmick?

Actually I'd love Froyo on hardware like the iPhone 4. It's never going to happen, but I can dream can't I?

I think you misunderstood my point. Matias Duarte is "famed" UI guy that just left Palm/HP's WebOS team for Google's Android team.

I'm not sure about Google's ability to retain talent... but I'm hopeful that Matias can bring Android some UI/UX love.

That's not true. Non-"Google Experience" have plenty of access to all of the Android Google APIs, etc. If they didn't no apps that used Google Maps, Navigation, etc would work. The Google APIs are something that 3rd party apps rely on. Google restricting their availability would literally destroy the Market in one fell swoop.

The only thing that changes is whether or not they can print "Google" on the phone.

Not really. I am not nearly ignorant enough to imply that any of the various aspects of desktop multitasking will be viable or well suited for a mobile platform any time in the future, nor would I want it to be.

The fact that Apple doesn't support proper background services outside of the very basic 3 things they let an app do in the background, only support for bg notifications through a timer or their own push notification server.

I mean, I understand the power assumptions that Apple is making and claiming as benefits, but it just seems limited. I think of several applications I use that would not be implementable on iOS, certainly not without many major modifications including some weird use of the iOS push note-server.

I don't understand why that's an advantage? It's just another of Apple's control vices. The hardware of the phone functions independently of the software and vice versa. Maybe for things like fragmentation or updates it makes sense, but I don't really see Google putting on the brakes because they don't make the hardware. Ironically that's the very thing leading to the so called "fragmentation problem".

It's beautiful hardware and beautiful software. I'll take functionality any day though.

This is the divide. I have two geeky friends. One is OCD and well dressed. He likes things to work smoothly and look good. He is very happy with his iPhone and is excited to upgrade. My other friend is like me, he loves to hack and is a fan of Google's services.

Google needs to put Matias Duarte to work. Gallery3D is beautiful, there's no reason those GUI elements couldn't be more standard/accessible to the avg dev.

drivebyacct··on Daring Fireball: iPhone 4 Impressions and Observations
Apple has benefited far more than AT&T... look at the stock prices or revenues gained. I'm not saying they're benefitting specifically from exclusivity... they would make more with more carriers to be sure... but the notion that it's "bad for Apple" doesn't seem to float.
drivebyacct··on An Android user tries out the iPhone
Many people seem to think that OS 4 is going to bring this awesome multitasking. I think there's going to be a lot of disappointed people when they find out just how it works, seeing as the API for actually creating background services is crippled and the app switching is just a poorly implemented copy of Android pause/resume functionality.

What an unfair review. Compare like units. My Droid (especially now that it is running Froyo) has literally none of these problems. There is no lag between launching applications and when you replace the terrible stock launcher with LauncherPro, it really gives great performance. I have no shuddering and I also have Flash in my browser. Works reasonably well, especially when using 'On Demand' mode.

Reviewing Android on the ram/cpu starved Hero doesn't really give Android a chance to shine.

drivebyacct··on How a Silly Phone for Teens Reveals Microsoft's Plan for Us All
All of my email is in Gmail, contacts in Google Contacts, text messages in Google Voice.

Google beat them. Once the new Market launches with music and music sync, it won't batter what MS is doing.

drivebyacct··on SSH tip: Automatic Reverse Tunnels for Workflow Simplification
I know it's OT, but I have a PC that is behind a firewall that I have no control over. I have a public server that I run/control. Can I use SSH to create a tunnel so that I can hit publicserver.com:port and have it route through a ssh tunnel initiated from my firewall'ed private computer?

I wish it worked like that. That way you wouldn't have to wait for a developer to enable copy/paste in the app, it would be there by default.
drivebyacct··on Why are objects so unintuitive?
Language and syntax are not the same thing. You don't have exceptions to rules in programming languages like you do natural languages. That's the difference but in a more complex way. Through natural language, there are simply more intricate and accurate ways of describing things, than in a procedural or methodical object-oriented syntactical manner.

And more importantly, we created it in the first place.

It's right under the "More" menu entry man, dunna how you didn't look there. Also, lmgtfy.

You can select text in Email, Corp Email and the Browser. Gmail has copy/paste in Froyo.

Except that there are hooks in the OS to share all of those things natively in a data format that is useful to other people with phones... I'd be annoyed as shit if someone with an iphone texted a god damn picture of where they were instead of a mobile link that would open my maps application to your location allowing me to navigate there, etc.

drivebyacct··on New Adobe Flash 0day, have a nice weekend
No, no it does not sum up why there's no Flash on the iPhone. Thanks for playing though. Enjoy your consolation prize.
drivebyacct··on Gay on Facebook: Nowhere to Hide
No, I don't think you understand. I was outted long before anyone wrote anything on my wall simply by who I was friends with.

It's immediately obvious to me that various people around me who are "straight" aren't, seeing as we have 40 friends in common and 38 of them are gay...

Apparently the article missed this point entirely. Shame. Some university did a study that they could very accurately predict sexuality based on friends, frienships, etc.

drivebyacct··on Apple & HTML5
It sure doesn't right now. And I've heard that line before.
drivebyacct··on Apple & HTML5
Since when does a "standard" mean that it magically works across all browsers. Is HTML5 less of a "standard" because Microsoft is too lazy to implement it properly in their browser?
drivebyacct··on Countering the Perception That the iPhone OS Is Too Closed
I have commented similarly and more conservatively of a similar opinion of Gruber on the last several high brow articles that have made it to HN. It's really become pathetic. I mean, it started with valid points but then he started sticking his nose in crummy decisions Apple had made just to defend them.

It's really just annoying to see it happening because its the same illogical crap that so many people spout that I write off as being the opinion of "just another fanboy". Dunna if I have the heart to call Gruber that, but jesus
