drited··on Reading SEC filings using LLMs
One of the advantages of data from CapIQ /Refinitiv is that you're not just pulling data from a single report but rather data has been curated across time from multiple historical reports so that historical income statements, balance sheets, footnote data etc spanning many years can be generated.

When you say that generating graphs of gross margin, EV/Ebitda is just one step further, are you talking about generating those based in just a single report's information or are you combining information from multiple years to for example show gross margin trends over 10 years and EV/TTM Ebitda?

The author seems well aware of that though.

Aren't authorised? You seem to be way to accepting of authority for my liking.

We should be rooting for the small guys like this who shake monopolies out of their complacency.

drited··on Berkshire Before Buffett (2015)
But he kept Berkshire going for years when it made little economic sense to do out of a sense of obligation?
drited··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Maybe 3 hours a week or so depending on what else is going on. Fairly frequently I hop into VR for a game of contractors for 40 mins at the end of my day (instead if watching TV or whatever). I also exercise occasionally in VR, maybe once or twice a month using Thrill of the Fight boxing.
drited··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
I would totally rather work on this all day instead of being hunched over a laptop. The freedom of posture, and the expansiveness of the desktop real estate blow laptop productivity out of the water in my opinion.
drited··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Infinite is my answer. I sit down all day at my desk job. I like to move in my free time. VR gets me up and moving, I love that. I don't play console or PC games at all.

drited··on German monks create first powdered beer
I had the opposite impression. I thought it helped to visualise the product, brings down the cost of the article and was clearly highlighted so it's not like they were trying to hide it. For a small article like this it would seem so wasteful to send a human out to do the job.
drited··on SVB collapse: Peter Thiel’s role scrutinized as spark of bank run
>> but you don't really care about that when you are intending to hold the bonds to maturity. They where solvent when bonds where valued at maturation rates

Actually if you're a bank whose business model is predicated on interest spread between your assets and liabilities you do care. This is particularly true for banks like SVB whose duration of liabilities (deposits) is short because suddenly cost of deposits rises while longer-duration 'held to maturity' assets still generate the same (low) rate of interest. Suddenly the bank is loss-making.

People are talking about mark to market like it's irrelevant but it's actually a very important market signal. It is not just relevant for balance sheet valuation. It is also a signal of future income statement profitability unless duration of assets is well matched with duration of liabilities.

drited··on SVB collapse: Peter Thiel’s role scrutinized as spark of bank run
In your assertion here are you assuming that the bank was solvent and just had a liquidity problem, not a solvency problem?
drited··on SVB collapse: Peter Thiel’s role scrutinized as spark of bank run
Why do you say misdiagnosed in light of the scale of unrealised losses at SVB vs its equity?
drited··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
Perhaps try working memory training software of the type that Suzanne Jaeggi used in her studies. The software is called Brain Workshop. It is free.

Note the science on this is messy. Jaeggi's paper suggested transfer to fluid intelligence, then another paper questioned that, then she wrote a better designed follow up, then another paper questioned that.

Anecdotally I think it worked for me. I personally think the difference in study outcomes may have been driven by differences in how diligently study participants stuck to the regime, or perhaps even how well they understood what they were supposed to do.

A second recommendation is to read John Medina's book 'Brain Rules for ageing well' which has lots of tips for combating cognitive decline.

Yeah it sounds interesting but what are the details on how likely obstacles are overcome? what do you do when the room fills up? Who owns the land? Who manages it? Who stops people from using it as a trash repository?
drited··on Ask HN: Do you measure and/or mitigate CO2 in your living space?
Perhaps it would be useful to hear your experience with CO2 assuming you have already implemented these measures in your home?
drited··on Ask HN: Do you measure and/or mitigate CO2 in your living space?
Yes. From the monitor I discovered that co2 in my home office rises from around 700ppm to 1200ppm in just a few hours unless I open a window or the door. Now I generally leave the window a little open or if the neighbours have their fire down I just open the door to the hall.

drited··on “Is there a heuristic we might use to identify and flag questionable papers?”
Interesting thank you!
drited··on “Is there a heuristic we might use to identify and flag questionable papers?”
Is the correct interpretation of the minus signs here that you distrust journals that print ISSN on every page more than you distrust journals that print ISSN prominently?

Also could you please expand on the thought process behind this heuristic?

drited··on “Logistics”, an 857-hour movie, tracks a pedometer from shop back to factory
The author mentioned that they started out looking for the world's longest horror film but ended up finding a film which exposes capitalism's underbelly and brings home why life is turned into a blur by capitalism.

If you ask me though, based on this paragraph they did actually find the world's longest horror film! As for the anti-capitalism hints in the article, try watching an 857 hour film without starving in a non-capitalist economy!

"There came a point about three weeks into my viewing where the maddening, non-Euclidean shape of Logistics fully formed in my mind. I had an unnerving migraine. I could barely get myself together, let alone watch a boat not move for nine hours. I thought about quitting or taking a few days off, but then it occurred to me: the crew of the ship couldn’t quit, and the filmmakers couldn’t take a day off. I was now a part of this filmic thing, and I couldn’t stop until it was done."

drited··on Tell HN: I interviewed my dad before he died
If parents are aging but in good health, I've found a good way to broach this topic is to do it as part of a project where it's not just the aging family member who is being interviewed. Then you also get the bonus of having archives of interviews with the rest of the family.
drited··on Sri Lanka is having a textbook currency crisis, triggered by policy mistakes
Substituting electricity made at natural gas fuelled power stations for electricity made at coal fuelled power stations does however result in large carbon emission reductions and is seen as ESG (or was prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine anyway)
drited··on Sri Lanka is having a textbook currency crisis, triggered by policy mistakes
They can be used to create hydrogen however which can substitute for many energy uses that currently consume natural gas.

Also Europe produces a lot of electricity with natural gas fuelled turbines.

drited··on Sri Lanka is having a textbook currency crisis, triggered by policy mistakes
Are you seriously claiming that saying closing existing nuclear is stupid is 'shilling' for nuclear?

New nuclear is expensive. Existing nuclear is not.

drited··on Sri Lanka is having a textbook currency crisis, triggered by policy mistakes
Not just a dictatorship problem. Look at the halting of nuclear in Germany - a decision made by Angela Merkel after a bottle of wine with her husband according to The Atlantic.

I would argue that the current energy crisis was also partly caused by the ESG drive which while laudable in aspiration got ahead of physical practical implementation capacity.
