drill_sarge··on Steps You Can Take Right Now Against Internet Surveillance
The more people TOR use, the more secure it becomes. All attacks base on analyzing incoming and outgoing traffic or monitoring nodes which use outdated tor version. And why should be using "open wifi networks" more secure or anonymous? You don't know whos running them and who you can trust. With TOR you could still go over open wifi while having not (or much less) to worry about who may be sniffing on that wifi access point.

I am surprised that the EFF is recommending two factor auth instead of avoiding Google, Facebook etc. at all. Also no mention not to use certain proprietary OS.

I think this list provides some better overview of alternatives: https://prism-break.org/

drill_sarge··on Germany wants a German Internet as spying scandal rankles
This is just snake oil marketing from the politicians and german ISPs. First they did not care at all when 82 million people were spied on (they literally said, that this debate was over and all question have been answered) and now they make a huge deal of it because it affects them personally.

Also the whole proposal does not make sense, because it is known that our own intelligence is sniffing traffic too and Telekom and others complied with them. Not to mention that our intelligence service and the NSA working together, hence the NSA even has spy equipment here which is tolerated by the government. Also implying that "national routing" is any kind of defence against spying. And all that wouldn't even affect people using Google, Facebook etc. just lol

drill_sarge··on Introducing WhiteHat Aviator – A Safer Web Browser
Just Install Firefox (or Chromium, not Chrome) and install some extension and you have the same from a much more trustworthy source.
drill_sarge··on Ask HN: How old is your computer that you use regularly?
Since I always partially upgrade my machine, I can tell. But the oldest piece (aside from the case) is the Radeon HD6870. Rest is FX8320, 16GiB ram, SSD.

The oldest thing I use is probably my "travel laptop" Thinkpad T43.

drill_sarge··on The PC is not dead, we just don't need new ones
Yeah. The last major thing for PCs in the past couple years were probably SSDs.

drill_sarge··on Show HN: Mac Pro equivalent using i7
Difference between Radeon and Fire Pro is only in the driver certification/support.

edit: also this thread is kinda pointless, because it should be well know that you can build the same machine for much less money when going by the raw specs.

drill_sarge··on Germany summons US ambassador over claim NSA bugged Merkel's phone
when it was revealed they spy on everyone of us, they said: ahh no big deal, americans are our friends. And now they found out they personally were spied on, it's suddenly super horrible and evil. Fuck them.
drill_sarge··on The making of Elite
I played the C64 version a while ago and it really hasn't aged well. If you want to play it (again) you should go straight with the MSDOS (plus) version.
drill_sarge··on Fedora Linux will switch to Python 3 by default
This whole thing is no _big_ news at at all. I wonder what they define with "scope". If they are talking about 21+22 thats around ~12 months ahead, so even less big news.
drill_sarge··on Fedora Linux will switch to Python 3 by default
The interesting thing is of course: >DNF is the default package manager instead of Yum, which only works with Python 2

Otherwise no big news, since all other major distros are switching to default python 3 too.

drill_sarge··on Torvalds: SteamOS will "really help" Linux on desktop
I think it will help not exclusively _Linux_ but it will help more to get real support behind graphics drivers. Sure, some of this is directly related to the kernel (like power management, switchable graphics etc.) but mostly it is stuff which isn't directly related to the kernel (e.g. mesa, xorg, wayland). What I see recently that AMD has really stepped up too (if you own Radeon HD, not the very old Xwhatever series), contributing to kernel code and mesa drivers. Nvidia has some pretty good proprietary drivers, but heh... they are proprietary. Thats the main problem I have: Both AMD/Nvidia closed drivers offer better 3D performance, better feature support for their chips etc. but when I have trouble with graphics on my system, it's because of the closed drivers. You never know if they still work after updating.

drill_sarge··on It's a software free-for-all: Apple puts pressure on MS and Surface
It's not free, it's gratis.
drill_sarge··on Ask HN: Why the Microsoft hate?
Probably also a bit of Nokia hate. They basically axed everything interesting they worked on, missed every innovation (totally not related to Elop) and got bought for really cheap by MS (totally not related to Elop).

drill_sarge··on In Firefox 24 and following, mark all versions of Java as unsafe
Since I replaced Adobe Reader with SumatraPDF on my Windows machine I found this to be a really good feature and it works for the most PDFs. In recent Firefox version I did not have any problems viewing PDFs. Although they need to make it more responsive, especially on larger documents. But Adobe Reader wasn't really fast to begin with, so it's not that big of a deal.
drill_sarge··on In Firefox 24 and following, mark all versions of Java as unsafe
Well, Icedtea w/ OpenJDK7 still running. So this is Oracle-Java only?
drill_sarge··on How to lose $172,222 a second for 45 minutes
Yes, the more people monitoring the better. But in this situation someone has to be in charge and make a decision. And nobody wants to be that guy.
drill_sarge··on How to lose $172,222 a second for 45 minutes
Or better call it virtual money. (but we all know theres also "fake" money made and destroyed in that system, too)
drill_sarge··on How to lose $172,222 a second for 45 minutes
I still find just the fact scary that at this moment automated systems are shoving billions of fake money back and forth around the world.

For me it is just a huge cash grab for icann and others. Gosh, look at the pricing.
drill_sarge··on Was iOS 7 created in Microsoft Word?
With the current trend of simplifying your interface graphics about 90% of this could be made in MS Paint. Also applies to Windows 8 and to some extend to desktops like GNOME.
drill_sarge··on How many people are missing out on JavaScript enhancement?
I hate simple websites which don't work unless you have js on. It's becoming more and more common to make "JavaScript enhanced" into "JS required". :(
drill_sarge··on The Best VPN Is The One You Use
If you really want to help with privacy and stuff and also think long term, it would certainly be better to invest in an internet router where you can directly install TOR (as relay). If a lot of people would do this you could solve the slowness and make it even harder to identify users.

Imagine some ISPs start rolling out such routers per default.
