drevil-v2··on 'Doomscrolling' breeds anxiety – how to stop the cycle
The problem with this that there are actually massive cultural and ideological changes been imposed on the western society at this time. We are being dragged to the hard left across multiple institutions. Some of us might not want that

Ignore it and you will be the quintessential lobster slowly being boiled to death.

drevil-v2··on Robinhood and How to Lose Money
It just boggles the mind how people were able to invest for hundreds of years without a frictionless UX.

Regarding #1, my thinking was this is China or their allied nations (North Korea, Iran etc). The US has taken extremely forceful steps on China in the last couple of days. This could be their response; discrediting a huge piece of the American crown jewels (big tech companies) and making it a laughing stock.

Just the massive blast radius of the hack reminded me of the NK Sony hack and release of documents. Big up yours to Hollywood from Kim Jong.

drevil-v2··on Ubisoft CCO Serge Hascoet resigns in wake of sweeping allegations
Citation needed for that “95%+” claim. And While you are at it, can you spell out what exactly you mean by “sexual assault“? It seems to me that the meaning has been corrupted in order to further political and ideological aims of the accusers and executioners.
drevil-v2··on Ubisoft CCO Serge Hascoet resigns in wake of sweeping allegations
I am deeply troubled that we have normalised public executions on the basis of allegations. No person or group should have that power to effectively end someone’s career on accusations alone.

Doesn’t LS let you block internet access per app per domain? At that level of control why would dns resolution bypass matter when I can still block the app from talking to any arbitrary IP?
drevil-v2··on Apple declined to implement 16 Web APIs in Safari due to privacy concerns
The problem with having an Android phone is that then you have to actually use the damn thing.

On a more serious note though, in iOS 14 app developers are responsible for any SDK's their app uses including data egress.

drevil-v2··on India bans TikTok, WeChat, and dozens of other Chinese apps

drevil-v2··on iOS14 reveals that TikTok may snoop clipboard contents every few keystrokes
If by problem you mean end of laziness then sure. You can no longer drag and drop FB or google analytics SDK into your project, type in a few lines of glue code, email the product owner that you have added tracking capability into the app and head down to the pub to spend some of that well earned six figure developer salary.

Now I am gleeful about this because it's win-win for me as a consumer and software engineer. Better privacy and use of my data as a consumer. More $$ work as an engineer when all those analytic pipelines need to be re-architected and rebuilt.

Spot on. It's like they are discovering capitalism again from first principles and trying to cover it up with brand new coat of paint / terminology.

I have never seen Gardening Leave used in this manner.

Usually (and I know this from personal experience) if you are senior enough you have a notice period of 3-6 months and under normal circumstances you are expected to do a proper handover before leaving. Sometimes they don't want you to come in to the office or have access to the corporate network/data but they still want access to you in case they need it.

Non-competes are usually 18-24 months and I don't think anyone is going to pay that for you to sit on your butt.

drevil-v2··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
That was just a simple example. The safari implementation is better, I type in “price” and it expands that to “Priceline.com”; just press enter to go directly there, otherwise either keep typing to narrow or down arrow and enter to search
drevil-v2··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
Not really. Say I type in “Ikea” into Safari address bar and I have never visited Ikea.com nor is it in my bookmarks; the first option is “Siri suggestions... Ikea.com”. Either click on it or down+enter to go directly to Ikea.com

With Firefox, with the same starting conditions, there is no way to directly go to ikea.com by just typing in Ikea. If there is no history or bookmark then it will take you to a search for Ikea instead

I use 1Blocker and StopTheMadness. Both via the Mac App Store. Works great.

Another 2 handy extensions: Tabs to Links and Tab Spaces.

I don't have any affiliation with any of these extensions; just a satisfied user.

Same here. Safari day to day and Edge/Firefox for dev tools

Safari ticks all the boxes for me:

- Power consumption

- Minimal UI that is elegant and easy on the eyes

- Font rendering is much nicer (especially when compared to Firefox)

- Enter a word in the search bar and usually Siri will show you the exact website and just select it to go there. Other browsers will take you to search page first then you select the first result to go there

- SMS integration for 2FA

- Bookmarks UI is so much cleaner than any other browser.

Speaking of bookmarks, why the fuck does Edge and Firefox store any bookmarks created on your phone or tablet under a separate top level section "Mobile Bookmarks"? It is just so unnecessary and adds needless UI interaction just to get to it.

Is there anything more dangerous than someone who views themselves as objective while sanctimoniously berating other people for having "biased" views?

drevil-v2··on Mark Zuckerberg faces employee blowback over ruling on Trump comments
But if they resign they would lose the six figure income and also any influence with future censorship battles at Facebook. Better to stay in, wipe your tears with dollar bills and keep the pressure alive. Zuckerberg will give up at some point.

This playbook is depressingly familiar around the world now. Relentless constant pressure to delegitimise institutions at every possible opportunity. Day after day. Week after week. Month after month.

Just a few recent examples. UK with Dominic Cummings, Australia with the fires, India with Hindu hysteria, US with.. well everything.

drevil-v2··on Mark Zuckerberg faces employee blowback over ruling on Trump comments
The billions of users of Facebook might not appreciate a censored view of the world. The shareholders might have something to say about it too.

drevil-v2··on SoftBank’s Vision Fund Loses $17.7B on WeWork, Uber
You are completely wrong.

I worked for 3 years as a part time taxi driver in first world mega city while doing my post grad at University. Taxis are heavily regulated. If I had refused a fare, I could be taken to court. Especially if the passenger belonged to a certain category like disabled or children needing a ride home after school.

This was pre GPS days so I had to pass 4 different computerised exams about the city and major roads. I had a through police check and had to display my taxi driver license on the dash.

There was proper commercial driver & vehicle insurance that was automatically taken out the day's earning. There was camera in the car including infrared mode. There was a panic button to start broadcasting location, video and audio.

Uber's advantage was completely ignoring any regulations. No insurance. No driver check. No driver safety infrastructure.

And their best move was the marketing bullshit. Even now people like you spout the same talking points.

drevil-v2··on SoftBank’s Vision Fund Loses $17.7B on WeWork, Uber
That's a false equivalency.

Tesla shares are expensive compared to other car manufacturers because investors are placing a bet on the future of the automobile being electric and Tesla having the first mover advantage and becoming almost synonymous with Electric Car. Same way we now tell each other "just Google it".

If it was just for having a yoga instructor as CEO and all you can drink Kombucha at it's charging stations then it is eye roll worthy.
