dreamsofdragons··on The real responsive design challenge is RSS
We refuse to pay for content, and we refuse to view ads. I keep hearing "Then come up with a different business model, just look at X" where X is simply burning VC, and then we all complain when X goes away or X starts to show ads or charge. Models like Patreon don't scale. If you can figure out a way to monetize without ads or paywalls, I'd love to hear it.
dreamsofdragons··on Bullshit fighting
I honestly thought this was about Trump for the first few paragraphs, and almost quit reading.

While we've found the the scientific meathod doesn't scale, I suspect that a Watson style application could seriously help one day. This is only compounded this with the "publish or perish" mentality. This encourages falsifying results, but also adds more noise to the pool of journals, decreasing your chance of being called out. I don't think the issue is with liars, but with the system.

What we really need now is Scienceology, (no not the religion) but a division of science that analyzes science. Finding better ways than what we have now.

edit: Cleaned up to make it slightly less nonsensical. I really shouldn't make a comment before having a coffee.

dreamsofdragons··on Patent troll asks judge to turn off FaceTime and iMessages
This definitely fits the definition of a patent troll.
dreamsofdragons··on FBI raids dental software researcher who discovered patient data on FTP server
Annonomous email through a few proxies from a one time email address should be sufficient.

"I accidentally discovered this when I miss typed an IP."

dreamsofdragons··on They knew it was round, damn it
Arguing with genuinely stupid people just makes me frustrated and depressed. It's far far easier to just ignore them.
dreamsofdragons··on Facebook admits rogue employees may have shown bias against conservatives
It is interesting, how we collectively accept news organizations of having bias and falsifying news. And yet a social media site, with no need to be balanced, this bias is seen as unacceptable. Maybe because we can easily see the blatant bias of the news organizations, but the thought of being subtly manipulated irks us.
dreamsofdragons··on Oculus Rift exclusivity protection leads to a VR piracy arms race
I was really struggling, trying to figure out which headset to get. They just decided for me.
dreamsofdragons··on Our “No Asshole” Rule (2014)
Always remember, to the Emperor, Luke Skywalker was an asshole.

Policies like this have nothing to do with "assholes". They're about control and groupthink.

dreamsofdragons··on Senate Passes Bill Exposing Saudi Arabia to 9/11 Legal Claims
So does this not open the door to pretty much everyone suing the US? As far as deaths and destruction on foreign soil, nobody beats good ol America.
dreamsofdragons··on Frend – accessible, dependency-free web components
Absolutely. I'm currently working on an in browser IDE for a language I've created that compiles in the browser, and it has both a code view and a WYSIPCTWYG (what you see is pretty close to what you get) design view. Tabs work well as a separation between code and design, given the context. We also use an accordion for the controls which you drag onto the canvas, as there are more controls than we can fit into the palette in a comfortable layout. Granted, I created my own, but they're proven concepts.

I don't think I've once looked at my car and asked "Steering wheel? pedals?. Are car designers still using these things?"

dreamsofdragons··on Ask HN: How do you use Amazon Echo?
Interesting, my Apple Watch is virtually perfect. It actually really surprised me the other day, I was listening to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History the other day, and forgot what a satrap was, and it wasn't clear from the context. Paused the podcast, asked what a satrap was, and it returned a definition.
dreamsofdragons··on A cool way to use natural language in JavaScript
If I were to get back into it, I'd still pick English because English is lingua franca. But I fully suspect that there are equal efforts in Madarin, Hindi, Spanish and French, we just don't hear a lot about them as outsiders of the community.
dreamsofdragons··on Did I just win?
This is what Social Engineering is. Asking someone to do something that they normally would do, in order to get the desired outcome.
dreamsofdragons··on Apple invests $1B in Chinese ride-hailing service Didi Chuxing
Why wouldn't you?
dreamsofdragons··on New Sublime Text update
I'll have to disagree with this, the VS Code team has made me reconsider electron as a desktop platform. Compared to atom, it's far snapier, and loads much quicker. I think you're giving the new Microsfot short shrift.
dreamsofdragons··on New Sublime Text update
While not a sublime, I frequently switch iterm's themes when I code outdoors. A dark background is my preference, but a light theme works much better in sunlight.
dreamsofdragons··on Apple invests $1B in Chinese ride-hailing service Didi Chuxing
I'd certainly consider it a small chunk. Based on 2015 revenue, and my 2015 income, Apple spending $1B is the equivalent of me buying a MacBook. The cheapest one.
dreamsofdragons··on Introducing unlimited private repositories
I have, I'll continue to use bitbucket.
