dreamer7··on Nobody designs for small iPhone devices anymore
This is not true. We still use my iPhone SE with a 4" screen as the primary testing device for our iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/vendi-buy-sell-verified-phones...

There are many advantages to it. If it looks good on the SE, we can be reasonably sure it will look good on everything else (though this was affected by the introduction of the notch). Also, flagship iPhones can easily handle badly designed apps but my phone will show lag and artifacts while scrolling through an infinite scrolling screen.

dreamer7··on What I wish I knew before building a Shopify App
That is definitely easier to work with but may not solve all problems. In the parent example, they mention Country and CountryCode. What if one team decided that they needed codes and the other needs the full name?

There has to be company-level standards to ensure consistency. And it is so hard to enforce standards unless a culture of revisiting and generalising things is created while growing from a small team.

dreamer7··on I Want a New Duck (2020)
I'm curious to know what makes it one of your least favourite languages. Could you elaborate?

The reason I'm interested is because I love python and would like to hear differing opinions

dreamer7··on Common Mistakes of New Engineering Managers
I'm curious. Multiple back and forth seems to indicate that you missed your previous role. Was that why you made multiple shifts? Or were they just different opportunities?
dreamer7··on Routing the Technical Interview
This was the most engrossing article I've read in a while!

Seeing the regex made me chuckle.

dreamer7··on Fabbrica: A sans serif typeface with a utilitarian aesthetic
B definitely triggered the OCD in me for it to be symmetric. The rest of the font looked so balanced and the B kept screaming to me for help
dreamer7··on Has Y Combinator lost its way when the latest company is a Mac only widget?
It's not just a click or two when we are joining several meetings in a day. Personally I'm annoyed by repetitive tasks that are slow due to external factors. Joining a meeting through Meet on Chrome involves - 1. Open a new tab on the right user profile 2. Navigate to meet.google.com (second slowest task) 3. Click on a meeting. Wait for it to be setup (slowest task) 4. Join. Wait for a couple of seconds for the stream to setup.

I would rather club multiple slow steps requiring user action into one long wait time that I can completely ignore.

dreamer7··on Write Simply
This is good but without the extra words "extremely rare, potential harm.." this feels like it was a dangerous miss. I would worry about future such occurrences rather than just archiving it. Also I would definitely read more details. So perhaps this message works better in educating users
dreamer7··on Write Simply
I was hoping you would share your simplified version of the GitHub quote. So let me attempt it instead -

"On the evening of March 8, we logged out all users from GitHub.com who had logged in prior to 12:03 UTC on March 8. This was done to protect users from an extremely rare, but potentially serious, security vulnerability affecting a very small number of GitHub.com sessions. No user accounts were affected"

I really couldn't simplify much without losing information. Logging out users isn't the same as invalidation of authenticated sessions because this probably revoked access to bots / API calls etc.

dreamer7··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs to travel the world, how did it go?
For those curious, this is a quote from Marius in the game Diablo
dreamer7··on Zero Data App
I think the idea is also to prevent the centralisation of data. Because then, the entity that owns your data can create service plans to expose sections of it. The biggest example is LinkedIn. They charge a ridiculous amount of money to just share someone's job preference - open to work, etc. Paying for a smart aggregation or filtering or any meaningful transformation of the data is acceptable. But not for just sharing the raw data when it is user generated.

I have some vague plans around building a job portal just for startups looking to hire ex-startup founders where the data is not owned by my platform and freely available for everyone to leverage as per user preferences.

dreamer7··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2021)

dreamer7··on Amazon rainforest plots sold via Facebook Marketplace ads
I really have to shamelessly plug my marketplace - https://vendiapp.com here. This is exactly why we started this with the goal of helping other marketplaces as well to completely protect its users. We believe marketplaces must start becoming more responsible and accountable for the transactions that they facilitate.

We are currently focussed on the verification of electronic products. But our goal is to verify listings in all verticals with a high risk of fraud.

dreamer7··on Resources for chief technology officers, with the emphasis on startups
My biggest challenge as a CTO is that, by nature, I'm singular in focus. If I am developing something I find it hard to context switch and review other developers' work. The best strategy I have found so far is to block certain times in the week solely for reviewing everyone's progress.
dreamer7··on Show HN: Lowdefy – Build internal tools with YAML on an open-source framework
This is very useful! I was going through the code and it seems quite simple to add new connections. But I didn't find any documentation around it. Are you not planning on community contributions for connectors anytime soon?
dreamer7··on We live in an age of distractions, dealing with constant mental stimulus
Seems like there's an app opportunity here! Free time as a service. "Choose how many hours in a day you would like to be free and we will automatically block your calendar, cancel meeting invites, setup an email auto-responder and disable access to the internet" /s
dreamer7··on Second Citizenships, Residencies, and/or Temporary Relocation
If you were ok with settling outside India you could become a citizen of another country which supports dual citizenship.
dreamer7··on Why Birds Don’t Get Cold Feet
Have you tried pashmina? If there existed a real invisibility cloak, it would be made of pashmina! Soft, thin and magically warm
dreamer7··on Building Rich Terminal Dashboards
This is really interesting! I've been thinking of creating a TUI version of a marketplace I'm running in the UK. The idea is that most of our time on marketplaces is spent on discovering the product we are looking for and that is much easier to do without all the bloat of modern apps. What do the people on HN think?
dreamer7··on Fake Amazon reviews 'being sold in bulk' online
This comment isn't entirely without merit. If Amazon could guarantee the genuineness of every product and description, and delivery times, is there any need for star ratings? Reviews are better because it's easier to differentiate between fake and real reviews for now ( as fake reviews usually contain grammatically incorrect sentences, multiple copies with different names etc )

That's what we have done at the marketplace I'm running in the UK. There are no seller ratings and users are encouraged to share feedback.

dreamer7··on Email from Jeff Bezos to employees
Yet, Walmart seems to rely on GCP and Azure for atleast some of their cloud requirements
dreamer7··on Ask HN: Why has the HN theme changed?
Ah! That's a relief to know. Thanks!
dreamer7··on Legally Free Python Books List
Would be nice if it was segregated into beginner, intermediate and expert levels
dreamer7··on Google outage – resolved
It is something related to authentication. Even YouTube works without being logged in
dreamer7··on Google outage – resolved
I was kicked out of a Google Meet call just now
dreamer7··on Apple’s “Extended Dynamic Range” Brings HDR to Non-HDR Displays
Just tried this on my Macbook Pro. It was easier to just go to YouTube and search for HDR videos than downloading the sample in the article.

Digital Color Meter shows both UI white and video white as exactly #fff despite the video white being much brighter!

Even at full screen brightness, the video white was noticeably brighter

dreamer7··on Stripe Treasury
weavr.io seems to be an alternative . They may have more resources on the problems it solves
dreamer7··on The Purpose of Writing
The quoted section also reminded me of my experience with coding. I sometimes think I've thought through the entire implementation. But when i begin coding, I notice the gaps in my implementation or cases that I hadn't considered earlier.
dreamer7··on Open EMR
I'm not convinced that we can try to enforce any sort of format on blank paper for doctors. They fill templates also in weird and unexpected ways. They will write info out of order, in different orientations, outside the margins, etc.

I would be interested in discussing this in more detail. Let me know if I can mail you.

dreamer7··on Open EMR
Hi could you please elaborate on how this would work?

There have been several attempts at treating paper as first class - scanning reports, using a digital pen etc. But none of these solutions is convenient. How would you interface paper with software?
