dreamer7··on Show HN: Python Source Code Refactoring Toolkit via AST
Would this be a good tool to attempt simple transpiling of typescript code to python?

For my use-cases, not much changes between the two -

1. Replace opening and closing braces with colon.

2. Remove semi colons

3. Replace function with def

4. Remove type definitions

5. Replace array manipulation functions with python equivalents.

6. Remove tokens like const, let and var

dreamer7··on Show HN: An app that helps engineers fight back against pointless meetings
As someone who has done this, I can tell that it's not easy to justify. In my previous company, there were two teams, one in India and the other in US, working on a project. Each team had a scrum master and a daily morning scrum call. The India team was expected to attend the US team's scrum call as well. This made no sense to me as I already provided updates in the Indian scrum call. So I made it clear that we should either cancel the Indian scrum call or we should not attend the US one. But I was a relatively junior developer and senior engineers were complying despite disagreeing with the arrangement. So, the US scrum master escalated it as far as he could take it. I did not back down and defended my position with senior management as well. It was a fun filled week though. Every day the US scrum master would think of a new silly reason to escalate my absense and I would have to counter it. Eventually, the practice of attending both scrum calls was dropped.
dreamer7··on Postgres Full-Text Search: A search engine in a database
When I implemented search for my app, I built a hierarchy of the different attributes weighted by levels and scored search phrases for how closely they matched. This is for mobile phones. For example, searching for "Silver iphone 11 pro" would give a higher ranking to all iphone 11 pros that are Silver, then comes differently coloured 11 Pros, followed by 11 Pro Max and 11s, lastly all silver coloured phones.
dreamer7··on Open Decision-Making (2014)
Could you elaborate on this? How does the distinction between taking and applying affect the decision making process?
dreamer7··on Open Decision-Making (2014)
Ya there are some decisions that are best taken from the top like “what is the overall direction for the company”, “who is our real customer”.

We should absolutely listen to the views of anyone in the company who has an opinion but some questions require a lot more knowledge and maturity than individual departments may have.

In many of these questions, there are several right answers so we only need to decide the answer that we are most driven by. The people who are most invested in the company are the ones to whom such answers must appeal.

dreamer7··on Show HN: I made an interactive anti-procrastination video course
I agree with your points, having experienced both sides. One other thing that I've noticed helps a lot is to have a starter template. It's a lot easier to not procrastinate when you have a structure to think with even if the structure is bad and you end up changing it completely. I tend to procrastinate more when I have to do something from scratch
dreamer7··on Launch HN: Weekday (YC W21) – Hire engineers vouched for by other engineers
I would love to try out your platform for my current hiring needs. Good luck with the launch!

One UI feedback for your website - On your contact form for companies, text isn't visible when the form field is not in focus. The text colour matches too closely with the field background.

Edit - Also, on submitting the form, the success/ confirmation text did not appear in the visible window. I had to scroll up to see it

dreamer7··on The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday
I think it depends on the activity. It's impossible to build any medium to high complexity software by working on it for 5 mins a day. But you can make a lot of progress by practising every day for very little time. For example, I've improved on my tucked planche progression by just leaning forward while holding a plank for 5 seconds every day.
dreamer7··on Using Paper for Everyday Tasks
Ya this makes sense. It's like setting up a chess board to study a position vs trying to do it all in your head.
dreamer7··on Utopia, a visual design tool for React, with code as the source of truth
Recently I started incorporating n8n, a workflow automation software, into my backend. Initially my use-cases were Zapier-like. But I realised it was more powerful as a visual program editor. For certain kinds of workflows, it is more intuitive to code and manipulate them using graphical nodes. Perhaps, we can have a similar text+graphical editor for such backend code as well.
dreamer7··on Reverse Engineering Bumble’s API (2020)
I understand how it ends up like this as I myself run a startup with a small tech team. Typically the issue is that we are always looking to add new features versus trying to fix issues from past. But I still believe that with good principles from the beginning, we will be able to build better software without costing us time
dreamer7··on Reverse Engineering Bumble’s API (2020)
Most of the things described in this post are easy to mitigate without much additional development effort. Rate limiting, role based access etc are commodities now.

Implementing server-side validations is, in my opinion, mandatory. This is even more important for any API with more than 1 client - Android, iOS, Web etc. Not only does it prevent basic security breaches, but also it prevents hard to track bugs. More importantly, why would you not centralise business logic as much as possible instead of having to duplicate it on every client.

dreamer7··on Fastly Outage
Firebase hosting has been affected as well
dreamer7··on Show HN: Open-source alternative to Retool, Internal.io, etc.
Congratulations on the launch! What would you say is the main reasons why one should choose you over other open source solutions like Appsmith and Budibase?

PS: Small typo on the docs - https://docs.tooljet.io/docs/intro/

> but in case you are stuck, please feel to mail us:

dreamer7··on Show HN: Open-source alternative to Retool, Internal.io, etc.
We definitely need good reviews comparing all the different options. Hard to know the pros and cons of each solution quickly. Appsmith, Saltcorn, Budibase were three others I came across today
dreamer7··on Vim Modes Transition Diagram
I was using vim mostly while working on projects with a single board computer. But at that time I only knew the basics of searching, jumping to a line and entering insert mode to edit some text.

Recently I installed vim plugin for vscode and spent a little time digging deeper into vim and practiced until it got into muscle memory.

One little shortcut that I've noticed even some experienced users aren't aware of is :x to save and exit. It is equivalent to :wq

dreamer7··on Vim Modes Transition Diagram
I started using vim quite recently and I have a pure opposite view point as yours. With vim, I find myself editing code effortlessly, without conscious effort. This never happened when I was doing this with other text editors using keyboard shortcuts or the mouse.
dreamer7··on Show HN: Nyxt Browser 2.0.0
True, this was my problem with vimium as well. The characters of the link would change even for relatively stable UI functionality like going fullscreen on Youtube. So, there was no muscle memory. Ironically, the only time i would remember i had vimium installed was when i would try to press f and then press a couple more characters while wondering why i installed the plugin in the first place.
dreamer7··on Paper Notes
Very true for me too. I write paper notes ordered by time on subjects that I need immediate understanding on. To preserve important conclusions or insights I add them to my digital notes which are organised by topic. I liked the author's idea of having a separate topic based notebook as well to summarise journals. Paper is so much more inviting than any screen I've used so far.
dreamer7··on Lima: Linux-on-Mac
Would you call tethering your Android phone via USB to your laptop a basic thing? Recently, I was having trouble with my phone's WiFi hotspot and tried to tether via USB. The only solution was Horndis, a 3rd party kernel extension. I quickly became knowledgeable about kexts and csrutil, rebuilt a kernel extension for M1 architecture and gave up after several hours of frustration. It's ridiculous that Apple can get away with being so closed
dreamer7··on My service to check whether an item is counterfeit or not
Some very good questions in this post that I would have also liked OP to answer. For context, I run a marketplace (https://vendiapp.com) where we physically verify every product transacted on our platform. We are focussing on Phones and similar high value electronic products susceptible to fraud. And visual inspection is definitely not enough to detect fakes in this industry. Also, average cost of having external experts is more than $20. So, there is a need for deep tech and a great supply chain to make the unit economics work.
dreamer7··on Show HN: A portfolio website simulating macOS's GUI using React
Best to just install Rectangle app (formerly Spectacle) and use sane shortcuts like alt+option+enter for full screen.

dreamer7··on Zellij – A Terminal Workspace and Multiplexer
Could your problem be partially resolved by having a key called description or comments where you could provide some clarification?
dreamer7··on Permission.site
That seems really problematic though. I could be on a text editor, or the terminal or anywhere else requiring text input and might not be expecting this behaviour.
dreamer7··on Permission.site
I completely agree. MacOS, atleast since Catalina, has been seeking more specific permissions for apps which is good.

One particular video conferencing software asked for permission to read key strokes from any process! A very weird request. The only non-nefarious use case I can think of is that they want to allow keyboard shortcuts to work even when their app isn't in the foreground.

dreamer7··on Do you really want Linux phones
Just to clarify, Android has had the ability to request permissions ad hoc in the user journey since Android 6.0.

But it is true that Android won't reject apps that refuse to work without a permission while iOS mandates that basic functionalities of an app work even when permission is denied.

dreamer7··on GPT-3 tries pickup lines
That line only leads to a repetition of moves if it's played as a joke by mutual consensus. It's sort of like two people pointing guns at each other verbally accepting to drop their weapons. Will one of them hold on to theirs?
dreamer7··on In 2020, two thirds of Google searches ended without a click
I have noticed an eerily accurate prediction of my search term though. Several times, when I hit a bug and attempt to learn more about it, Google makes precise auto-complete suggestions
