drchickensalad··on Sandspiel – A falling sand game built in Rust and WebGL
This is easily one of the oldest and most enjoyable games I've played. Thanks for the work you've done!
drchickensalad··on NY state tax break is $48k per Amazon HQ job
Literally nobody has claimed giving tax breaks to the 90% of Americans is evil. Your comment appears sololy meant to be inflammatory and promote low quality conversation.
drchickensalad··on Not exercising worse than smoking, diabetes and heart disease study finds
That doesn't work for most people, so they put money on the line.
drchickensalad··on Repair is as important as innovation
Have you seen the code people write for mobile apps lately?
drchickensalad··on Firefox removes core product support for RSS/Atom feeds
I work on some authentication software for a relatively niche service in a company of 50 developers. We get brute force attacks of thousands of IPs quite regularly.
drchickensalad··on If You're Not Writing a Program, Don't Use a Programming Language [video]
I think the intention was that if you have no mut refs, then you have no borrow checker problems.
drchickensalad··on The Python scientific stack, compiled to WebAssembly
Without a doubt.
drchickensalad··on OpenAI Five at Dota 2 – The International [video]
The consistency is definitely a factor, but even in just the top 80th percentile it's quite common to happen.
drchickensalad··on People start hating their jobs at 35
Really? I've always heard 2y or more at each place is the line of no suspicion, and from more conservative sources than HN. Interesting.
drchickensalad··on Warner Music Group Sells Entire Stake in Spotify
I was going for this applying to every industry. There's almost always a giant competitor that does almost exactly what you do. I personally feel the software industry is a bit easier to escape this problem, since it's quite low overhead to pivot in comparison, and it pushes so many solutions to problems people didn't know they have/want, instead of being more commoditized.
drchickensalad··on America's first big offshore wind farm sets record low price
Feel free to review http://large.stanford.edu/courses/2016/ph240/white1/ or other research. There's quite a lot of propaganda surrounding renewables so it's worth doing a little extra investigation.
drchickensalad··on Warner Music Group Sells Entire Stake in Spotify
> You should always be afraid when your entire reason for living is a feature of a larger company.

Isn't this true for a majority of companies?

drchickensalad··on Serverless, Inc. lands $10M Series A to build serverless dev platform
Not the OP, but they only said it wasn't strong enough, not exclusively engineers. I see plenty of grey area here.
drchickensalad··on Hackers account for 90% of login attempts at online retailers
I'd like to get you started on SMS 2fa. I deal with this a lot at work and would like as much information as possible!
drchickensalad··on Twitch streamers who spend years broadcasting to no one
It's definitely true for some people I know because it gets you above the fold for the game/category.

Most people watch above the fold in browse, and then above the fold for those games, so the streamers get all or nothing depending on the fold. So when you start out, that's nothing.

But for the minority of people who care about specific games/categories that usually aren't above the fold on browse (which hn is probably biased towards), this gets you quite consistent growth and engagement, especially if you're competant at the game or interacting.

drchickensalad··on Why not program right?
Yeah it has a priority; low priority. Nobody wants to pay for it and it's not costing them in the market.
drchickensalad··on Oldest domains in the .com, .net, and .org TLDs
God I love octopus. Thank you for your work!
drchickensalad··on YouTube (Un)Blocks Blender Videos
Curious of the ramifications of the fact that companies normally only have a handful of vendors relative to their employee size, but have tons and tons of "vendor" end-users.
drchickensalad··on Twitter ‘smytes’ customers
I can't say I've ever met a developer who thinks that a 100% error rate to valid requests isn't an outage. Not sure why you have such a strong view of your semantics.
drchickensalad··on A New Accent Is Developing in Southwest Kansas
I've been on the internet for 6+ hours a day for the past 15 years and I have literally never seen it.
drchickensalad··on GitLab sees huge spike in project imports
I think the true advantage you're referring to is automated regression testing, which isn't necessarily just unit testing (or at all)
drchickensalad··on A pure JavaScript implementation of Git for Node and browsers
Git is not the same in this case. Since git branches are just refs, I can do whatever commits or other changes I want and then assign a branch name. With hg every commit you make must first be done on the branch you want. This, when understood fully, can allow git to be much more flexible when manipulating the tree.
drchickensalad··on Malware Found in the Ubuntu Snap Store
For some high performance games, storing assets with weaker compression means less CPU cycles spent.
drchickensalad··on Americans Are a Lonely Lot, and Young People Bear the Heaviest Burden
And that might only increase in the future
drchickensalad··on Ask HN: What foods do you eat to optimise brain function/problem solving skills?
Every computer or phone I own has a screen display filter to rid those blues. Really helps reduce the artificial stimulation for me.

Once you get used to it, turn it back on sometime temporarily. It's incredibly blinding.

drchickensalad··on Reasoning with Types in Rust
Site isn't very usable on mobile.
drchickensalad··on Ask HN: Is it 'normal' to struggle so hard with work?
Do you have any more information or links on this interpretation of the matrix?
drchickensalad··on ISP Spying
Because you have to be in the know-how and do work to achieve that?
drchickensalad··on The Long, Slow Decline of BitTorrent (2017)
You're free to think that, and possibly some less important companies could get away with it.

However, in reality, the content owners really aren't that dumb and incompetent. There are very punishing legal implications to breaking the contracts, especially your relationship with others. And the content owners don't just do nothing; there's quite detailed questions and requirements they give when you renew their content, and they very often discover things they want to change after.

It's obviously a problematic enough relationship that netflix doesn't want to be a part of it anymore. More power to them; I wish this could be done for all industries as easily/well.

drchickensalad··on Sticker shock over Seattle's new sugary drink tax
Soft drinks are very refined sugar. Quite different from natural.

Also implying natural is better.
