dragonbonheur··on Republicans move to sell off 3.3m acres of national land, sparking rallies
When this year is over, US citizens will hold the world record for protests against their own government.
dragonbonheur··on BaCon – BASIC to C converter
It's great that there's also a way to get it to work on some Android devices too http://basic-converter.proboards.com/thread/683/howto-use-ba...
dragonbonheur··on The lost art of 3D rendering without shaders
Look up tables for pre-computed sine values. Search for "Denthor's tutorials" from the Asphyxia Demo group.
dragonbonheur··on Show HN: Larry Wildman – Send free, anonymous postcards to horrible bosses
Marketing Genius! Great way to get leads and consulting opportunities.
dragonbonheur··on Should I build this?
Twitcasting does that, but go ahead if you can do it better.
dragonbonheur··on Wave of spending tightens China’s grip on renewable energy
Anyone can make a solar panel just like anyone can build a wind turbine just like anyone can build a sterling engine, just like anyone can build hydroelectric dams or solar furnaces. China does not have a "grip" on renewable energy - having a grip on something usually means excluding others from having that thing. China is not preventing anyone from building up their sources of renewable energy. The Financial Times should learn to choose their words better to communicate facts.
dragonbonheur··on China Turns to $503B Rail Expansion to Boost Growth
The country that had twelve rail accidents in 2016, the envy of the world?

The USA isn't the envy of the world for anything these days. Only Americans think that. Nobody envies you for anything, not even Silicon Valley, with the housing crisis and poverty surrounding it.

dragonbonheur··on Intel Committee Releases Declassified Snowden Report
The US government is now permanently stuck in 1984. /s !/s
dragonbonheur··on Google's Larry Page Got Bored of Disrupting the Telecom Sector with Google Fiber
It's mostly a greater example of how Telecom companies bought US government officials to keep competition out.
dragonbonheur··on How Apple Alienated Mac Loyalists
Why? Because a lot of people are begging for a Mac Pro upgrade. Not a concept trashcan computer, not a thinner laptop. A serious computer for serious people who do serious work like video editing, special effects, running TV studios, high performance computing, chemical engineering, etc.
dragonbonheur··on How Apple Alienated Mac Loyalists
Maybe the time is right for SGI to get back into making workstations again now that Apple doesn't seem to care as much as before.
dragonbonheur··on Koreans Are Building a Real Mech
Instead of thinking about war, maybe you should think about construction and clearing disaster areas.
dragonbonheur··on Mark Cuban: Dear Mr President, My Suggestion for Infrastructure Spending
Bridges have fallen, trains have been derailed, infrastructure spending is the best way to put Americans back to work and Mark Cuban wants more automation, now, more robots. Which robots? Manned exoskeletons? Autonomous job-stealing robots? Cooking robots to replace fast food workers? Soft robots to help old and handicapped people? Micro robots to pollinate plants when the bees die out?

How about not declaring war and using half the taxpayer's money on making defense contractors richer? How about not having 800 bases around the world? How about not toppling foreign governments? How about actually making corporate giants keep and reinvest their profits inside the US instead of keeping it in the Bahamas or in Ireland? How about giving everyone free education, thus really investing in your country's future -its children? How about not having more than half of the US population living in financial precarity despite the country supposedly being the richest country on earth? How about making sure everyone has a home?

Writing blog posts is too easy for some people. Not that this president-elect can do better, but choosing the destiny of a country is more complicated than your dreams of robotic supremacy, Mr Cuban.

A country that does not want to live in peace with others, a country that mainly exports bombs and war, that does not look after its own population rich or poor, black, brown or white, a country that does not care for its sick, a country that has a government which only works for those who have bought it, a country completely indifferent to the mass murders of its own citizens, a country where being black is to be born guilty, a country where cops are judge, jury and executioner does not deserve to be leader in anything at all.

dragonbonheur··on 'Upset' Linus Torvalds gets sweary and gets results
Are you still using Visicalc, released 37 years ago? If everything goes right and Linus lives up to his mid-80's even at that minimum, those years will be several life times for a single software project to live.

There's a much better chance that kernel writing would have been fully automated by AI or evolved through much advanced genetic algorithms by the time Linus Torvalds passes away.

dragonbonheur··on 'Upset' Linus Torvalds gets sweary and gets results
Who would work on Linux if Torvalds was ousted as the leader of the Kernel Team? It would be one more project that would have died out in a sea of dead open source projects.
dragonbonheur··on The worrying implications of China's social-credit project
Perceptions can be distorted, Facts not so much.
dragonbonheur··on The worrying implications of China's social-credit project
By the volume of money involved and the impact on the rest of the planet, the USA is the single one country most characterized by corruption and opportunism by a wide margin.
dragonbonheur··on The worrying implications of China's social-credit project
>China, a country's whose politics and economy is currently characterized by corruption and opportunism

Successive US governments have appointed Goldman Sachs operatives to important government positions and you find that China is Characterized by corruption and opportunism?

The US started a war for bogus reasons for the benefit of corporations like Haliburton and you find China is Characterized by corruption and opportunism?

Obama did absolutely nothing to punish the people responsible for the worst financial market crash since the great depression and you find that China is Characterized by corruption and opportunism?

>China, a country's whose politics and economy is currently characterized by corruption and opportunism

Debbie Wasserman-Shultz empowered pay-day lenders using her public office in Florida and you find that China is characterized by corruption and opportunism?

>China, a country's whose politics and economy is currently characterized by corruption and opportunism

Hillary and Bill Clinton have been PROVEN to have engaged in par-for-play politics with operatives from Arab countries by the Podesta email leaks and you find that China is characterized by corruption and opportunism?

>China, a country's whose politics and economy is currently characterized by corruption and opportunism

The Koch Brothers have year after year used their money and influence to buy politicians at all levels so that they could pollute, fire people and evade taxes at will and you find that China is characterized by corruption and opportunism?

>China, a country's whose politics and economy is currently characterized by corruption and opportunism

The Syrian war has been nothing but another one of the USA's oil wars, with the USA FUNDING, ARMING and TRAINING TERRORISTS (Tulsi Gabbard just proposed the Stop Funding Terrorism Act, check it out), all so that Qatar could have a pipeline built from Saudi Arabia to Turkey, with the blessing of the Obama administration, and you find that China is characterized by corruption and opportunism?

Throwing stones around while you're living in a glass house aren't you? Have you even seen the CORRUPT people that Donnie-Tiny-Hands-the-Swamp-Monster has appointed to his cabinet?

dragonbonheur··on Putin reportedly oversaw Clinton email dump and election hacks personally
If. That's the key word. Even the FBI isn't sure. The CIA yelling "Russia did it" on all rooftops is only a sign that it's a last-ditch effort to prevent a Trump presidency. This whole rigmarole is hilarious to watch, especially when it comes from the country that invades other countries for "democracy".
dragonbonheur··on Putin reportedly oversaw Clinton email dump and election hacks personally
> Reportedly... Anonymous US intelligence sources... CIA... Suspicions...

Seriously. Anonymous US "intelligence" sources having suspicions about Russian hacking are not PROOF of ANYTHING AT ALL.

Has everyone forgotten about Colin Powell shaking his little flask of "evidence" of weapons of mass destruction before the whole UN assembly?

Has everyone forgotten how NINETEEN SAUDIS boarded airplanes that they flew into your buildings and killing more than THREE THOUSAND US CITIZENS and the US government decided to invade Iraq which eventually led to the rise of Daesh?

How much more bloodshed does the USA need? How much meat for the grinder?

Those cheering on the war will not send their own children to die. It's always poor people who pay, either side of the gun.

dragonbonheur··on Ask HN: How to ask the right questions?
This seems to be popular in hacker culture - http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
dragonbonheur··on [dead]
Barack Obama did not step down after Occupy Wall Street protests, George W Bush did not step down after Iraq war protests, Sarkozy did not step down after austerity protests, Erdogan did not step down after people protested him.

Nobody steps down after protests - welcome to the real world. No need to question their mentality.

dragonbonheur··on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 to Support Windows 10
Apple already had the eMate 300. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMate_300

And Acorn (the company that invented ARM chips - Acorn Risc Machine) had the Acorn A4 http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/det/22807/Acorn-A4-Laptop... Edit: Microsoft was also already there with their Windows CE devices.

And Psion and Vtech (http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/det/30249/Vtech-I-T-Lapto...) also used ARM Chips in laptop form factor devices

So it's not really about someone beating someone else to market, just the evolution of the market itself.

dragonbonheur··on ARM-Based Windows 10 Portable PCs? Hell Yes
An interesting development, but it is a shame that this will require a new chip from Qualcomm, while there have been full desktop Linux distributions for several ARM chips and boards for quite a while now. Microsoft's software is really full of bloat.
dragonbonheur··on ARM-Based Windows 10 Portable PCs? Hell Yes
It's not really different from choosing among 32 bit or 64 bit programs, or even, for Linux software choosing the package that's best for your distribution. It's not really a pain point. People can read. People who use Windows and Linux know how computers work. People are smart. People should not be babysat by their operating systems. It's gonna be OK. Don't worry.

dragonbonheur··on WeChat uses one censorship policy in China and another internationally
Do you honestly think US-based services are exempt from NSA/NRO/CIA snooping and should be trusted?
dragonbonheur··on Ask HN: What sort of technology do you envision in 2050?
Every company knows more about you than you will know about yourself. Every device and online service will have so many security holes that everyone, every organization, every government will be an open book. Nanodrones will target and execute people on a daily basis and everyone will own them - terrorists, freedom fighters, governments, corporation states, corporate cities, megacorporations. Victims will be selected by geographical area, ethnicity, skin color, sex and metadata. Corporations will also have their own military divisions.
dragonbonheur··on [dead]
Looks like everyone is looking to start his/her own personal Stasi.

That is not the way forward for humanity.
