dqh··on macOS in QEMU in Docker
Ubuntu 24.04 is a disaster in my mid-2015 MBP. Ubuntu 22.04 is surprisingly good though.
dqh··on Launch HN: SSOReady (YC W24) – Making SAML SSO painless and open source
Thank you for this, it’s sorely needed.

One thing I didn’t see mention of is group membership. Is this / will this be part of the core offering? Being able to map IDP group membership to permissions within your SaaS is powerful, and in my experience highly desired by clients.

dqh··on How to Know When It's Time to Go
FWIW I find the vscode + kickassembler + VICE toolchain a pretty fun way to iterate on C64 code.
dqh··on How to Know When It's Time to Go
Are you involved in the still-thriving C64 demo scene at all? Possible way to reconnect with the magic if not. Especially by attending (in-person, ideally) one of the many demo parties around the world.

There are also parallels with embedded device and FPGA work that I personally find thrilling.

Plus we on the VICE (open source Commodore emulator) team are always looking for devs.

dqh··on Ask HN: Who's been hired through Hacker News?
I was hired for my current role at Cortical Labs via a “Who wants to be hired?” thread a year ago. First time I had tried via HN, I had a great experience and I recommend trying it if you haven’t.
dqh··on Company Missions Are Bullshit
I almost can’t believe that I am defending this sort of thing, but if every company has the same mission of making money, then perhaps it is redundant to state it? Leaving the mission statement free to describe a way in which value is to be created.
dqh··on Show HN: Conway's Game of Life, but as a div full of Braille characters
Is all Braille identical? No equivalent of typeface where the dots are shaped of spaced differently, but in the same Braille pattern?
dqh··on Effectiveness of an walking intervention for the prevention of low back pain
Just massage, which would take the pain away for a few hours at best.

I went to a physio about my bad back once and she put ‘magic sticky tape’ on my back and not much else. Didn’t bother returning and thankfully the running was the answer.

dqh··on Effectiveness of an walking intervention for the prevention of low back pain
I had bad sciatic nerve pain for a couple of years, finally fixed it with regular 5km walks.

More recently, I would wake up with lower back pain every day. Started running (couch to 5k program), now run 30+ mins 3 times a week and no more back pain.

dqh··on When do we stop finding new music?
I suspect that it’s not cognitive decline, but that everyone is just too tired to make music.
dqh··on Tell HN: Ever think of applying to YC? Do it this weekend for S24
Are you sure it is in your interest to give up at the first hurdle?
dqh··on Mastering DOM manipulation with vanilla JavaScript
(Creator of NakedJSX here)

NakedJSX is primarily a low friction static site generator, it is not intended as a React or Preact replacement. Except for cases where something like React is overkill.

dqh··on ‘World of Warcraft’ players trick AI-scraping website into publishing nonsense
I keep one set up with a CRT TV just for “We Love Katamari” :)

When you say it’s still going strong, are you referring to homebrew dev or something?

dqh··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (July 2023)
Location: Melbourne, Australia

Remote: Yes (Plenty of timezone overlap with West Coast USA, previously worked London from Australia). Or hybrid local.

Willing to relocate: No. Occasional travel is fine.

Technologies: Very broad generalist. AWS, JavaScript, Java, C++, C#, C, Objective-C, Python, SQL, Bash. Web & native. IPv4 network engineering, SaaS infrastructure, security. Countless higher level technologies inc React and Node. 24 years of hands-on commercial experience.

Hello, I am an exited cofounder/CTO of a SaaS company that provides a no-code environment to insurance companies for building video focused insurance claim management systems, and ex-CTO of the company that acquired it. Prior to cofounding I was a C++ engineer specialising in real time communication technologies such as VoIP. The time I spent building a SaaS (and scaling up post acquisition) involved wearing every conceivable technical hat. I also spent a fair bit of time working directly with insurance companies to design integration projects and new platform features in response to their needs.

I have empathy for users.

Post-exit, I have been working on personal and open source technical projects, such as my recently released pet project NakedJSX: https://nakedjsx.org. I am also a core dev team member of VICE (the 8-bit Commodore computer emulator) where I have focused on the significant performance gains made possible by migration to a multi-threaded architecture.

I am still hungry to design, build, lead, and grow - and I would love to talk to you about your project. I am probably best suited for an early-stage / small organisation, but also curious about life in a larger organisation that could use someone who relentlessly gets things done. I think I would enjoy working remotely for a U.S. based startup.

dqh··on Sam Bankman-Fried fails to dismiss criminal charges related to FTX
I’m talking about effectiveness in any complex domain. It shouldn’t be controversial to suggest that someone who notices fewer details/patterns won’t (on average) be as effective at complex work.
dqh··on Sam Bankman-Fried fails to dismiss criminal charges related to FTX
The point is that for every moment that a high IQ person is observing, they are learning more than a lower IQ person. For the same amount of time invested, a high IQ person is going to have built a more complete picture to work with. It’s not the only factor, but it’s obviously a significant one.
dqh··on Sam Bankman-Fried fails to dismiss criminal charges related to FTX
I don't think it's reasonable to argue that IQ isn't a meaningful measure of ability. IQ tests appear to measure how complicated a pattern is immediately obvious to a person. All else being equal, why wouldn't a person who is able to immediately recognise more complicated patterns, do better?
dqh··on Humans aren’t mentally ready for an AI-saturated ‘post-truth world’
For me it’s almost like ‘seeing’ or ‘knowing’ the ‘shape’ of things and the relationships between them. Translating to words is sort of a seperate step at output. It’s difficult for me to describe.
dqh··on NakedJSX: Use JSX Without React
(Creator of NakedJSX here)

EDIT: Because JSX itself is so popular (React), I think I uncharitably misunderstood you as saying "There's a reason we don't do things this way" rather than saying "Here is a different approach." Could you help me understand what you meant?

dqh··on Using JSX with jQuery
Thanks! A request for a jQuery example was among the early feedback I've received for NakedJSX so I thought I'd make a clear example of using them together.
dqh··on React is 10 years old
I’d be interested to know if NakedJSX works for you. I released it about 6 hours ago and I'm looking for feedback. It allows you to use JSX (without React) to generate static HTML, and also to create DOM nodes in client JavaScript, and without any of the client side ‘framework’ stuff of React. You have full control over what happens when.

EDIT: clarity

dqh··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
On the other hand, people should be free to revise / update their works to maintain marketability, if they want to.

Beyond that, as a parent of young kids, it would be nice to sometimes be able to read / show some classics to my kids without having to explain what spanking is or why fat shaming was acceptable.

dqh··on Only one pair of distinct positive integers satisfy the equation m^n = n^m
As -2^-4 = -4^-2 I think the HN and blog title should also include the word 'positive'
dqh··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
I wonder if this triggered the recent layoffs?
dqh··on Distributing Mac apps outside the App Store, a quick start guide (2021)
I’m in this situation too, having to pay to be able to distribute macOS binaries of VICE. Quite annoying. I wish they’d make exceptions for open source.
dqh··on Programming interviews turn normal people into a-holes
Yes, or. That 'or' includes the sort of person that is so endlessly fascinated with programming that they can't stop themselves from creating things with code in their spare time.
dqh··on Programming interviews turn normal people into a-holes
All else being equal, people get better at things they do more of, and part of the interview process is finding out how much coding a person has done.

I'm sure that mother would give amazing answers to the other parts of this interview.

dqh··on Programming interviews turn normal people into a-holes
Sure. Which is why it's just part of a conversation, not a boolean filtering question.
dqh··on Programming interviews turn normal people into a-holes
> What is the coolest thing you ever built?

Fixing a bug isn't the same as building something, though.

dqh··on Programming interviews turn normal people into a-holes
For the same level of commercial experience, someone who spends most of their time outside work coding has more experience coding than someone who doesn't, and they probably love it. I think these things are worth knowing about a candidate when hiring?
