dpcan··on Apple doesn’t want you developing hobby apps
2 weeks ago I created a prototype in SwiftUI to present at work this week and I was going to use my phone. An hour before the meeting I decided to open it and do one last run-through to refamiliarize myself with it.

I got the same notice.

Had to scramble to rebuild/provision and re-install on my device from my Mac that was in another part of town - for which I had to drive.

And then I got some strange errors because apparently I had to update either my OS or XCode?

Ended up just showing the Android version and that worked fine of course.

It's very annoying indeed, but at the end of the day, complaining probably won't get me anywhere, it's been this way since, what, 2007?

P.S. Developers complain about a bunch of things on the Andrdoid platform too, particularly Google Play, so it's hard to win.

dpcan··on Ask HN: Longer Discussions in HN?
I agree that even old conversations need updates, but I think it should come in the form of a repost. Ask or post about the same thing again and let it get to the front page.

Every year or two the same thing needs opened for conversation - in some cases.

You can always reference the old post.

dpcan··on I hacked Gumroad’s API and broke a bunch of tools
All of the “suggestions” involve letting a pretty nasty bug persist in the wild. I can see why time was of the essence for them. Backlash from knowingly letting a bug be in production and exploitable would probably mean even bigger problems for them. Holidays? Too bad so sad. Maybe the author here should have waited until January to tell them about it… asks for urgent attention to a bug right before the holidays. Gets surprised when the urgent bug is fixed urgently. I don’t understand people anymore.
dpcan··on You don't need live chat on your website
Hmm, I disagree, and I also have a few clients that swear by its success.

Many times it’s not that you didn’t show enough info on your site, it’s that you purposely withheld info on the site to force a live chat requiring a name and email or you can provide good service in the chat and ask for it.

What the consumer wishes were true and what it requires to make a sale are unfortunately at odds in many businesses. It’s still not a perfect world.

dpcan··on Tesla.com/.gitignore
Yeah. WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Laravel, vanilla php. Together they power almost 45-50% of the web. So PHP is still extremely relevant. The most relevant you might be able to say.
dpcan··on How I survived a year in ‘the hole’ without losing my mind
"So is prison meant to reform or punish?"

I think it's meant to remove.

dpcan··on Show HN: Contact Form Delivery
Some hosts will require that you also install an SMTP plugin and use a 3rd party service like Sendgrid or Mailgun to authenticate and send the messages. If you have a professional web developer to help, this is usually fine, but if you don't, then this step will often times stop people in their tracks.
dpcan··on FogBugz goes dark
I got the same email and I sent them the same email. Not paying for anything, it was a free tool for a while, I didn’t use it, but loved the company. It is sad to see it crash and burn like this.
dpcan··on Show HN: I may have created a new type of puzzle
I don't like how the thing I have to move covers up the things I have to look at. Lost interest pretty quick because of this, but it seems like it would be pretty easy to put the moving thing next to the symbol or something.
dpcan··on W3.css – A minimal alternative to Bootstrap
And it’s okay for bootstrap to use p- or m- etc? Is it just because it’s w3?
dpcan··on W3.css – A minimal alternative to Bootstrap
I hope you’re so wrong.

W3 schools is a wonderful, excellent site.

Dropping w3- in front of their classes is so you can drop it in anywhere. It’s actually rather brilliant and has been helpful in many cases for me.

I don’t get the w3 schools hate-flex. Programmers judge other programmer choices too much.

dpcan··on W3.css – A minimal alternative to Bootstrap
You’re missing out.

It’s probably the best and easiest to use css/js/html reference site anywhere.

I can’t gauge how it’s changed but I find it’s to-the-point and example driven format is perfect for the way I learn.

dpcan··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
My favorites on Netflix this year were:

Trainwreck: Woodstock '99 https://www.netflix.com/title/81280924

Challenger Final Flight https://www.netflix.com/title/81012137

FYRE (Festival) https://www.netflix.com/title/81035279

From a long time ago, and I don't even know if you can still watch it anywhere, but that FogBugz Aardvark'd documentary was really fun to watch too.

dpcan··on So you want to be a writer?
I feel the same way about programmers.
dpcan··on Scratch is a big deal
“ Most importantly, browsing projects shows you what’s possible. A kid begins by playing games, starts to get curious, and next thing you know, they’re changing the code to give themselves extra lives.”

Gorillas.bas anyone?

My programming life started the same way about 30 years ago.

I love to hear this is still happening.

dpcan··on It’s 1997 and you want to build a website
I still learn to code from books. Something about reading the code, retyping it, looking at it on the page. It gets glued into my mind in a way that I can actually retain and recall it.

You learn NOTHING from copy pasting stackoverflow. I always look and retype or actually figure out what’s happening. Otherwise I won’t be able to solve problems, just put bandaids on them.

dpcan··on I don't care how you web dev; I just need more better web apps
More betterest.
dpcan··on Show HN: A short dystopian game I build last weekend
Oh wow, this comment is absolutely perfect for this post.

Just so you know, you are technically losing the game right now :)

dpcan··on TikTok updated privacy policy to collect faceprints and voiceprints (2021)
Life without TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram is so much better.

There’s just no way to tell those people what they’re missing.

dpcan··on How We built a $1M ARR open source SaaS
So, if an open source company changes their license, the code that existed before the license change still exists under the previous license right?
dpcan··on Possible impact of functional active gpcr-autoantibodies in long Covid
I need a smarter person than me to explain what this means please.
dpcan··on Ask HN: Non-violent video games with great stories?
Minecraft!

Lots of Nintendo games. Mario anything really.

I LOVE playing old King’s Quest games with my kids and they do too. Got them on Gog.

Totally reliable delivery service.

Most racing games are fine (Mario kart)

Heave Ho!

Ultimate chicken horse

But to be honest, I love playing Fortnite with my kids too.

dpcan··on We don't show typing status
This is awkward. I don’t wait. In fact I try to get my comment out before anyone else when I see someone is typing. Hmm.
dpcan··on Ask HN: Web frameworks – which less popular frameworks are you using and why?
Just PHP.

Plain old JavaScript.

Bootstrap for CSS/HTML tho.

Maybe I’m old, but learning frameworks doesn’t speed up or simplify anything for me.

dpcan··on Sound Blaster (DOS)
Books.

I spent my allowance on computer books about MS-DOS and various programming languages, assembler, interrupts, how computers worked, etc, etc.

I was obsessed with learning every little program that was in that dos folder, and how to write batch files and properly tune the config.sys. Then windows hit and there were ini files to explore. Plus you could hack a lot of old dos games with binary file editors.

I was just so passionate about everything. I feel sorry that all of this is just handed to my kids now. They’ll never choose to do the deep dive unless something takes over their brain.

If my friend’s dad hadn’t taken me to their old 286 and ran “type command.com” to make a bunch of gibberish appear on the screen I have no idea where I would be today. I was hooked from that moment.

dpcan··on I Trained My TikTok
You are correct.

I think the saddest thing is how addicted people have become to it. Instagram too.

Just read through the comments on this post, so many people defending it even though the content is just user-generated hot takes with catchy quotes and people saying things they want to hear and want to agree with.

It’s poison.

Be careful. If all you get is what you want to hear, you aren’t training TikTok, TikTok is training you!

And you keep coming back to the feeding tube for more.

dpcan··on WordPress’ market share is shrinking
We can make assumptions all day but for me, the worst thing about WordPress is EASILY Plugin Hell.

I can update all plugins this morning and they all want updates by the end of the day.

And then when they break it’s a disaster.

WordPress itself needs to take a chill pill too.

Leave a version out for a year or more, and only small security patches. In the last year, I think we’ve seen block widgets, JQuery migrate nightmares, that new blocks theme thing, and more. I just want them to back off already.

It’s a nightmare keeping hundreds of clients up to date.

dpcan··on Ajax Battle: XMLHttpRequest vs. the Fetch API
Who decides what is “cleaner” and “simpler”?

It’s such a strange take in the coding world. I don’t know why other developers get to decide what is clean, simple, easier to understand, etc, when it comes to my code or the way I write code.

I’ve been using xmlhttprequest for YEARS and honestly, it’s pretty dang simple. It’s pretty darn clean. And when we see it, we know what it’s doing and how it works.

I’m not sure of the motivation behind changes and new API’s like this that keep trying to fix what really isn’t broken for most uses.

dpcan··on Vizio TVs are now showing banner ads over live TV
Haven’t there been banner ads at the bottom of shows for over a decade now or more?

Usually not from the tv maker, but still a big banner at the bottom with a cheesy animation of the sitcom star or whatever?

dpcan··on Launch HN: Andi (YC W22) – Q&A based, ad-free, anti-spam search engine
Honestly, I went to the site, tried a few questions, waited a long time for it to “think” and got back pretty poor “answers” which were just links to the same huge websites that run ads on Google.

Not going to go back unless it makes some serious waves on HN with impressive improvements to share.

Good luck, hope this happens for you.

UI was not good on my iPhone 8 screen. Not everyone has the latest and greatest huge screens.
