dpatterbee··on A currently maintained fork of SSHFS
Note that in October B2 is removing egress costs and increasing storage prices to $6/TB.
dpatterbee··on A currently maintained fork of SSHFS
A local nas requires much higher upfront costs, I would need space to put it, and it requires much more ongoing maintenance and whatnot. If you factor the cost of my time it probably doesn't really work out as cheaper.

I love rclone, I'm currently using `rclone mount` to mount a Backblaze B2 bucket to use as backing storage for Jellyfin and it works a treat. There are plenty of dials to tune things like cache size and duration to minimize unnecessary downloads from B2, and with my usage patterns it ends up astoundingly cost effective (although at some point I might move to Hetzner storage boxes for even cheaper storage).

I would say a motor is remarkably useful feature on a transportation device.
dpatterbee··on My First Impressions of Nix
How are you managing docker compose with nix? Individual docker containers are easy to manage with `oci-containers`, but there's no obvious way for compose. Unless of course you're just writing the systemd configs in nix.
dpatterbee··on Framework Laptop 13 review: a DIY dream come true
My understanding is that every upgraded component which ships with the new framework can be purchased separately and installed in the 1st generation model. Indeed, this is the primary selling point of the framework. What source have you seen which says differently?

Pokemon games are developed by Game Freak, not Nintendo's in-house studio (Nintendo EPD).

Casting fear, uncertainty and doubt over a manufacturers claims is literally what FUD stands for. And that's what you're doing.

That seems like hubris, the human is always the weakest link in the security chain.
dpatterbee··on Framework’s computers aren’t perfect, but they are exciting
Strange, my experience with Framework support was:

1. Tell them the part was broken. 2. Send them a photo of the broken part and serial number at their request. 3. The replacement was on its way.

Perhaps they're a bit miserly with more expensive components like the mainboard.

dpatterbee··on Framework’s computers aren’t perfect, but they are exciting
I think if you're just looking to buy the best laptop on paper, the Framework laptops aren't even going to be in the conversation. It's just inevitable that in order to fulfill their sustainability and repairability goals they simply had to compromise certain aspects of the design.

That being said, I've had my Framework 13 for just over a year now and it's a fantastic computer, none of the compromises affect me much, although I could believe that they could affect other peoples' workflows. For reference I'd previously used a 16-inch 2018 MacBook Pro for work and it was an absolute piece of shit compared to the Framework (I now have the 2022 M1 Max 16 inch MacBook Pro for work and it's in a league of its own tbh).

dpatterbee··on PyCharm 2023.1
As another longtime user I agree. I think the JetBrains suite had always been showing far too much stuff around the editor that you would pretty much never use. The new layout keeps the stuff you actually want, while putting the extra stuff like 1 additional click away.

And honestly, everything's keybound in PyCharm so if you're someone who tries to optimise your editor usage you probably weren't clicking icons anyway.

This seems like an overly dismissive comment. Do you feel like this story is no longer worthy of discussion? Why?
dpatterbee··on The ingenious design of the aluminum beverage can (2015) [video]
A flat bottom would require a thicker layer of aluminium to provide the same structural properties.

The whole point of federated activitypub servers is the opposite of segregation - everyone gets to use whatever server they want and they can still interact with anyone else. Servers blacklisting each other (or defederating) is possible of course, but nothing's stopping you from just joining another server, and twitter at this point is just a large defederated mastodon instance anyway.

I think equating (or even correlating) the market value of some stocks with "improving society" is a pretty big reach.

Always amusing when I see yet another person who started their coding journey writing RuneScape bots, seems like a really common path within a certain demographic. (I'm assuming RuneScape here because it was the largest bot community I was aware of but I suppose there could be others)
dpatterbee··on The Google plasma globe affair of 2012
Something in the back of my mind is telling me that it's actually spec-compliant to send the 6 scancodes in numerical order. Could very well be misremembering though, and most implementations accept near enough anything from an HID device in my experience

I too do not like bicycles because people in Paris are rude.
dpatterbee··on Crossrail Project Update
How much of that is due to the reduced capacity and services they're running at this point though? Adding on Sundays and doubling the trains per hour would certainly increase the passenger figures.
dpatterbee··on Crossrail Project Update
> I don't see much technical difficulties

If you haven't seen the technical difficulties that crossrail has run in to then you haven't been paying attention. They've been talking for years about how complex it has been to integrate the 3 signalling systems in use at various points on the line, so I'm not surprised they want a human in the loop in case one of them gets a bit wonky.

>> making sure that accessing tailscale without paying is not too visible.

Not sure what this means, Tailscale is free for the vast majority of non-corporate users, and I would imagine that anyone who's using it so intensely that they need the "personal pro" plan is probably someone techie enough to dig around and find out about headscale.

Also headscale isn't entirely free if you're paying for a VPS or other server to host it on.

dpatterbee··on Nix: Taming Unix with Functional Programming
In my experience the Nvidia driver support has been pretty painless (once you figure out the correct settings in configuration.nix of course), and the availability of packages is by far the best of any linux distro I've used.
