dp-hackernews··on Writing a Gimp 3.0 Plugin
You kind of get that sort of thing for free if you use Nix as your package manager, along with home-manager - check the link below for more info

What, in this context (and most likely all), does outside our solar system actually mean?

dp-hackernews··on Human brain samples contain an entire spoon's worth of nanoplastics, study says
So does that include all particles of a similar size, like any sort of not digestible dust for example stone dust or sand dust etc?

If that's true, then I'm even more confused regarding how we assimilate and absorb nutrients into the body. I thought these broken down nutrients were microscopic and selectively absorbed, which suggests that our bodies naturally contain all sorts of potential contaminates that are not chemically broken down like nutrients are.

dp-hackernews··on Human brain samples contain an entire spoon's worth of nanoplastics, study says
Forgive my ignorance, but how the hell does a compound like plastic get biologically absorbed by the body without being broken down to a point where it is actually no longer a plastic compound?

I mean, we can eat triglycerides, but the process of digestion breaks them down in order for them to be absorbed, they are then reconstituted as needed on the other side.

What am I missing with regards "plastic" in the context of the article?

dp-hackernews··on Avoid ISP Routers (2024)
I'm guessing a 5G mobile option is too expensive. In the UK I have a 3Mobile (Smarty unlimited data) 5G connection, using an MC801, for £20/m and I get around 1gb/100mb with it - until the tower hits a busy period, then it drops to about ~500mb/20mb
dp-hackernews··on The Tyranny of the Mouse Jiggler
Why buy a mouse jiggler device when you can write a simple script that does the same exact behavior that can be activated on demand or programmatically in a plethora of ways?
dp-hackernews··on Is NixOS Reproducible?
No, but that's not entirely the fault of Nix as it has to rely on an element of good faith with externally managed artifacts.

But it sure is an improvement on pretty much any other package manager, or build pipeline - even if existing solutions were to use a frozen repository as the source of truth.

Packages in the nixpkgs repository also have metadata that includes whether there are any security vulnerabilities to consider.

Like a floating electrical circuit, or one inside some sort of fiber-optic, performing in a transistor, resistor, or diode like way?

How would you manage the excess/unused/unwanted laser though, switching? I.e. would it be absorbed or reused to prevent it bouncing around etc.

dp-hackernews··on Exercise Paradox
Calories are a measure of energy, NOT nutritional value.

Forget calories, think utility.

Some types of calories are good for you, others may as well be poison - therefore, the dose is the poison. By consuming calories in accordance with their utility you will do a better job at staying (or getting) metabolically healthy than only counting calories.

TL;DR: Eat more fat and protein from natural, preferably animal, sources, and you will naturally be less inclined to consume junk calories from carbohydrates and you will quickly feel better for it.

Watch this video below to understand more, for why this is the case, and why colories in v's calories out is a very poor model.
