downWidOutaFite··on Cold war satellite images reveal unknown Roman forts
Eh, maybe you're right. The thread is starting to devolve. I'll delete it .
downWidOutaFite··on The history of Rob 'CmdrTaco' Malda [audio]
The network effects are way stronger these days so they're able to withstand user-hostile actions like ad-friendly redesigns. Since the social networks are much bigger now and network effects are n^2 they're becoming unstoppable. I think we're stuck in this local optimum for a while. I kind of hope AI bots ruin it for everybody and we forced to come up with something new.

> maximize exploitable/monetizable authority and jurisdictional area

You're implying corruption for monetary gain, that is an extraordinary claim that requires extraordinary evidence.

downWidOutaFite··on Scammers posing as customer service agents on X as companies leave platform
In a lot countries outside the US this kind of customer support happens on Whatsapp.

The "it's just a cold" crowd was also a political reaction and they didn't come out look any better.
downWidOutaFite··on OpenAI in Talks for Deal That Would Value Company at $80B
If this is nondilutive could MS buy up these shares and get >50% and gain control of the company? OpenAi probably sold way too cheap last round, MS's $10 billion could end up being the steal of the decade.

Content is king. The tech barely matters. Especially since they made recommendations be subservient to marketing.
downWidOutaFite··on Clearview doesn't let Europeans delete themselves anymore
Both are bad obviously but as an immigrant of color this company's links to Thiel and white nationalist networks makes me more afraid of this tool in their hands.
downWidOutaFite··on Clearview doesn't let Europeans delete themselves anymore
This company is one of the main reasons I don't allow anything about my kids to be posted online. I'm trying to keep them out of the wannabe right-wing dictator's databases. Which is a real shame for some family members that want to see my kids growing up. But we're the land of the free, can't regulate our brave job creators.

I think Tier 1 ISP Hurricane Electric blocking traffic to Kiwi Farms because they don't like the content would qualify: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/08/isps-should-not-police...
downWidOutaFite··on Microfrontends should be a last resort
Python and any other popular language will try hard to stay backward compatible, so that shouldn't be a problem. I have encountered in the other direction where a library wants to use new language features but the app's runtime doesn't support it yet. That can be considered a downside.
downWidOutaFite··on The game theory of the Republican speakership crisis
The fundamental asymmetry in power is that the far-right group does not care if the government is functional, they're there to destroy government as much as they can, so they have leverage over anybody that does care.
downWidOutaFite··on Microfrontends should be a last resort
I'm a fan of libraries, not modules, for hard API boundaries. A library, developed and compiled separately and published with versioning, gives you a lot of the clean separation of services without the networking and system overhead. Dependencies should always point from the app to the library as much as possible, so the library should bring it's own dependencies instead of trying to reuse the app's framework/libraries.
downWidOutaFite··on Superlinear Returns
Nobody is snooping your network traffic to read the public plain text that you're reading on that site. And if they are, so what?
downWidOutaFite··on Superlinear Returns
Not really. In the 90s a lot of people were dismissive of the web but 10 years later everyone was a convert. It's just the beginning of this next revolution.

It wasn't from Pacific islands, they're not close enough to America. The closest polynesian island is Easter Island and it's 2,000 miles away and was only reached 1,000 years ago.
downWidOutaFite··on CIA publicly acknowledges 1953 coup it backed in Iran was undemocratic
I don't think it's related to the Overton Window. Usually it's just a web of insinuations based on vibes.
downWidOutaFite··on CIA publicly acknowledges 1953 coup it backed in Iran was undemocratic
Most of this was revealed by mainstream journalists, not conspiracy theorists.

The one I lived through, Iraq WMDs, wasnt a conspiracy theory at the time. All credible evidence said there were no WMDs. Bush and Cheney lied with no evidence. Everyone that was not a partisan Republican called them out on their flimsy pretext. That's why we had the largest antiwar protests ever (while conservatives ridiculed us).

downWidOutaFite··on CIA publicly acknowledges 1953 coup it backed in Iran was undemocratic
Conspiracy theorists can be wrong about 100 things before they're right about one thing. They're useless for understanding the current state of the world.

> It's not unreasonable to trace the Sunday's horrors in Israel to that event in 1953.

Israel doesn't care if their neighbors are islamic dictatorships, military dictatorships, or democracies, they work hard to keep them all as weak as possible.

downWidOutaFite··on Teens inundated with phone prompts day and night, research finds
Snapchat is like this, it's a communication app so you want the notifications on, but they flood it with marketing. And they refuse to use Android's notification "channels" to segment their notifications. Google should start enforcing that in their Play Store reviews.
