dougbarrett··on Ask HN: How do you track your billable working hours?
On the flip side, most projects I work on on the side are now are bid based vs hourly based. I wasn't a fan of it at first, but now I've really come to like it.

I know what I'll get paid, and the client knows what they're going to end up paying for the work that's been scoped out. It's up to me to determine whether I'm managing my time/rate correctly to make it a value for the client and that I'm getting what I feel I'm worth.

dougbarrett··on T-Mobile: Breach Exposed SSN/DOB of 40M+ People
Serious question, how would that be any different than a SSN?
dougbarrett··on Ask HN: M1 Mac Mini as local staging server?
I agree, I tried going the route of having a separate server to do my dev on, and it's a pain if anything with your network changes, and when you're not at home and connected over a VPN, then you're in a worse position than you would be compared to just spinning up a VPS.

I run Docker on my M1 Macbook Pro and have had no major issues running amd64 images using the M1 specific builds for Docker.

dougbarrett··on Google is saving $1B per year as a result of employees working from home
Maybe for older kids that are involved in extracurricular activities, but for younger kids that won't be the case. With a 4 year old starting pre-k this fall, I'll be lucky to have a distraction free work environment from 9-2 daily.
dougbarrett··on Ask HN: What should've been easily doable but is annoyingly difficult?
I can't stress this enough, losing weight should be on the top of my list, but there are so many other stressors in life that it makes it a low priority for me. Though I do realize the fact that if I got my weight under control, other things in my life may fall into place since I'd be leading a healthier lifestyle altogether.
dougbarrett··on Apple TV 4K Gets A12 Bionic
I agree wholeheartedly, the only downside I would see is that volume cannot be controlled through the iPhone app if you're controlling the volume through the TV. When I have a bluetooth speaker paired to apple TV, i'm able to control that volume using the rocker switches on my phone, it's the weirdest thing.

It feels like magic to have my TV turn on by a touch of my phone, and to also be able to control the TV when the kids think they are sneaky by not giving me back the remote.

dougbarrett··on Ask HN: What's the fastest stack for making web side projects?
I agree, swap bootstrap for tailwind, but i think that's a personal preference at that point. Golang/html templating is extremely powerful. Echo has become by go-to router, and Gorm is magic when it comes to dealing with mysql, especially when using automigrations and defining indexes within go structs.
dougbarrett··on Show HN: Micro – A platform for cloud native development in Go
For Go, there is no industry standard yet, but I've been using Echo for years now and love it. I also use Gorm for handling dealing with MySQL, both have made development in Go extremely productive for me.

From what I've heard from other Go developers, and what I've seen personally, is the library you use doesn't matter too much. They'll all offer their own benefits but because it's so easy to dig into the source to see what's going on underneath the hood, it makes picking up someones code easier than it would in other languages.

dougbarrett··on Ask HN: Cloudflare CDN Alternatives?
There are a ton, ones I've used personally are:

https://fastly.com

https://www.stackpath.com

https://www.keycdn.com

along with the AWS offering

dougbarrett··on Ask HN: What's best laptop for programmer in 2020?
If I wasn't using a Macbook, I'd be running an XPS (any size) with Elementary OS. I was running that briefly between Macbooks and loved it, but unfortunately a few weeks after purchasing it the company I work for switched VPN's and the new one no longer supported Linux, so I went back to using a Macbook.

I'm sure Windows is fine as well,

dougbarrett··on Ask HN: Alternative to Go
I've been developing Go web applications for the past 7+ years, some services getting billions of hits a day, and still have more than a handful running on various platforms currently.

In the past few days, I've been playing around with Kotlin because a client of mine is wanting an Android app developed, so I figure this is a good opportunity to dive right in. I have experience with Spring Java as well, not as the primary dev of the project, but I've written enough code to be comfortable with the process.

After being impressed with the process of writing Android apps in Kotlin, I decided to jump into Spring Boot + Kotlin and have been nothing but impressed. It's certainly different, but I'm feeling more productive than I was in Go because I can't say there is anything quite like it available in Go. I've tried Buffalo, but kept running into issues, and my typical go-to stack is Echo for the framework and Gorm for the MySQL library, but even then I need to pick my own tools for auth and caching.

The build time is certainly something to be desired, but with one of the more basic apps I'm writing for a client right now, it takes just a few seconds to compile, so it's certainly nothing to complain about at this point.

This is the tutorial I initially followed: https://spring.io/guides/tutorials/spring-boot-kotlin/ and swapping out the h2 database for mysql was pretty straightforward, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was able to have the app automatically set up the DB structure for me, similar to how AutoMigrate works with gorm.

dougbarrett··on Ask HN: Why is Facebook Stock back up again after advertisers leave?
that was my thought, they could be just buying through another company.
dougbarrett··on Show HN: Beekeeper Studio – open-source, cross-platform SQL client
Yesterday after using Sequel Pro for years, I decided to give TablePlus a try and have been pleasantly surprised. Sequel Pro seems a bit snappier is some instances like when you run a few dozen (or thousand) queries from the editor, but TablePlus query auto complete is so much better than Sequel Pro, and I really like having to confirm changes rather than them running in real time as I update/create/delete things.
dougbarrett··on Show HN: Goyave – Golang Web Framework
I know the plugins for VS Code can parse them and find errors prior to building.
dougbarrett··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?
I created https://projectconnect.us a few nights ago as a central location for small businesses that are still open in our area to promote that they are so. The service allows for businesses in other locations as well.

It had a lot of traction the first day, but kind of lost traction. As long as people are able to reliably find the resources they need, then I’m OK with mine not being their first choice.

dougbarrett··on Ask HN: Understanding Video Streaming and CDNs
+1 for HLS. HLS is an important aspect in saving money while using the CDN's. They allow for different streaming rates, and the player can download the video in chunks vs the entire video which saves money on bandwidth costs.

Encoding videos is important too, especially if you have users uploading videos, or you are getting videos from different sources, you can never depend on 3rd party sources because they'll always throw a wild card file type at you unexpectedly. If you don't want to do it yourself with ffmpeg, there are services out there like:

https://zencoder.com/en/file-transcoding https://aws.amazon.com/mediaconvert/

dougbarrett··on Ask HN: Privacy Focused Ad Network?
This is so cool! I've been writing ad software for the greater part of the decade, and my dream has always been to write my own small app to serve ads like how you are describing, but I'd be afraid that nobody would find value in it because there would be obvious restrictions beyond geo targeting.

It's great to see that you've proven it's possible and made it open source on top of it!

dougbarrett··on Show HN: 18 months ago I quit my job and made a meme maker
Very cool! How did you find your initial user base? Was it through attribution on the images being shared, or did you do any advertising?
dougbarrett··on Show HN: Cortris – A Simple Url Shortener written in Go
Good job on getting your first project out there, there is a lot to be improved upon here.

First off, it's standard practice to listen for PORT over the environment variable. You can always set a default, I often do, but it should able to be overriden.

Second, you are opening and closing your DB on every request, it may not cause too much latency, but you should 'open' the database upon application start, then use a service to allow your controllers access to the DB. If the project was larger, I would recommend some abstraction so you can use different types of storage solutions and the controller doesn't need to have any idea what is used behind the scenes.

errChk will cause the entire application to crash on any 'err' thrown in it that isn't nil. Errors should be handled a bit more gracefully, a common pattern is:

    if err := datastore.Get(c, key, record); err != nil {
        http.Error(w, err.Error(), 500)
        return
    }
You are definitely on the right path though! If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment. I can create a PR later with the suggested updates if that would be of any interest to you.

Oh, also Heroku or Google Cloud Run may be of interest to you, both services have free tiers that you can get started on, but you will want to change your datasource to use something beyond sqlite.

dougbarrett··on WordPad Is Gettings Ads in Windows 10
The article isn't talking about Notepad which SublimeText3 would be a good alternative to, but WordPad which is more of a WYSIWYG editor.
dougbarrett··on Ask HN: Where do you put your blogs?
I don't think you're targeting the right people here, everything you listed is free, and the majority of the readers on this site can get that set up on their own.
dougbarrett··on Is Fry’s Electronics in trouble?
Sorry for doubting you. I saw some pictures posted on Reddit if the Burbank store, it’s a lot more barren than I remember it being, so I don’t doubt that they’re cutting costs by not turning all the lights on.
dougbarrett··on Is Fry’s Electronics in trouble?
Right, I find that hard to believe. I worked in the Oxnard location for a short time in 2007 and that has never been my experience. They'll dim the lights well after store closing, but it's never been dark enough that I felt like I couldn't see what I was doing.

I just tested it out and the gist works pretty well! It did confuse me for a minute that it didn’t render the table view on mobile, and there is no way to sort the columns as well.
dougbarrett··on Show HN: Tool I created to covert tabular data to a 'pretty' table
Unless you hit certain thresholds, this won’t require an account. It’s not designed to run analysis, only to simply share data.
dougbarrett··on Show HN: Tool I created to covert tabular data to a 'pretty' table
There isn't too much to the rendered document, it reads the text as TSV and breaks that out into rows and cells. I tried keeping it as simple as possible for now, the idea isn't to help analyze data, but be able to share data in a usable format easily.
dougbarrett··on Show HN: Tool I created to covert tabular data to a 'pretty' table
I appreciate the feedback!

The unfortunate part of it is it's parsing the data based on the characters it finds in the text being processed, so if when you copy the data from your PDF reader, I'm guessing the data is positioned in the document using X/Y coordinates which is why it can't be formatted correctly.

I will definitely look at the document and see if my assumptions are incorrect, and if there is a different delimiter being used then it may be something I can work with.
