dougSF70··on Ask HN: PG's 'Do Things That Don't Scale' manual examples?
Great question.
dougSF70··on Ask HN: PG's 'Do Things That Don't Scale' manual examples?
Same thing happened on this site. To this day most comments and discussions are between the two HN moderators using a panopoly of usernames and ip-cloaking.
dougSF70··on Ask HN: Over what distances are 800M runners competitive with 400M runners?
Great response, 500M sounds like the distance.
dougSF70··on Ask HN: Over what distances are 800M runners competitive with 400M runners?
400M WR is 43.03 vs 800M WR is 1 min 40.91..at 400M pace the WR would be 1 min 26...the 15sec difference is due to the physique of runners optimized for different distances.
dougSF70··on Ask HN: Over what distances are 800M runners competitive with 400M runners?
I dont think a 400M runner can keep up the same pace over 800M because of the oxygen debt that builds up in the muscles. So you cant just double their 400M time to get their expected 800M time.
dougSF70··on LinkedIn laying off nearly 700, mostly from core engineering teams
Microsoft about to swallow a $25bn+ tax hit.
dougSF70··on 200k users abandon Netflix after crackdown backfires
This isn't unique to Netflix. Women make up the majority of non-sports TV viewing in general.
dougSF70··on Raise less, build more
This is us! I couldn't learn the rules of the game "how to raise from VC funds" so we built profitable scalable software-led business...took us a few pivots but here we are.
dougSF70··on London Then and Now: Aerial Shots Show City Grow over Past Two Decades
A US pint is 16 fl Oz vs a UK pint which is 20 fl Oz, so add 25% to the US price to do a like-for-like.
dougSF70··on LK-99 isn’t a superconductor
Thank God, this means I can stop pretending to be a twitter expert on superconductivity.
dougSF70··on Ask HN: WFH vs. RTO Productivity Data?
On the very first day of the shut down in San Francisco, my wife looked at me in such a way as to suggest there was absolutely 0% chance of me working from home, ever. I went back to the office one hour later...
dougSF70··on The Collapse of the EV SPACs: Another One Goes Bankrupt, Others on the Verge
This applies to all SPACs not just EV SPACs. In the traditional IPO route the underwriting firm will have performed some due diligence - from a reputational risk standpoint. Without that element, SPACs were always going to be attractive to firms that had zero substance.
dougSF70··on Tell HN: ai.com used to redirect to chat.openai.com, now it redirects to x.ai
The second best time to buy a domain is today.
dougSF70··on Numbers without which it's impossible to talk about weight loss
I think about reduction in volume rather than reduction in weight as a goal. Burning fat will reduce your volume but adding muscle will increase your weight (potentially).
dougSF70··on We spent $20k on Google Play pre-registration ads
I have spent a few $00 possible $000 on Google Ads and had nothing to show from it. Lots of traffic no sign ups. I then emailed a list and got a 4% conversion, so it isnt the product, it must be the targetting. As Bob Hoffman (a contrarian ad thinker) says do you want to die wasteful (spend $ on analogue advertising) or unknown (spend $ on line advertising)
dougSF70··on Case study: Algorithmic trading with Go
Facebook Ads are equally valueless.
dougSF70··on Ask HN: I want a list of the labels firms use to refer to their workers
It's also a bit like schools and organizations that want to foster community by using the term community as much as possible, without actually doing the things required to create a community
dougSF70··on Ask HN: I want a list of the labels firms use to refer to their workers
I agree the intent isnt bad day-to-day but when the terms are used in layoff announcements, e.g "to the Tacklers we are parting company with today..." it seems to dehumanize (perhaps intentionally) the outcome.
dougSF70··on Ask HN: I want a list of the labels firms use to refer to their workers
It is the terms used by the CEO to refer to their "family" that I am interested in.
dougSF70··on The Pentagon’s $52k trash can

dougSF70··on Westfield Walks Away from Downtown San Francisco Mall Property
Aka, the uni(corn)bomber.
dougSF70··on Westfield Walks Away from Downtown San Francisco Mall Property
Realtors are desperately clinging on to the idea of $1000 per sq ft in an average neighborhood...
dougSF70··on Westfield Walks Away from Downtown San Francisco Mall Property
They might also be most motivated by any incentives offered by the city to bring people and shops back to market street/ union square. Part of the perception issue is the ratio of homeless to non-homeless people. Tipping the balance back might help improve perceptions and create a virtuous circle.
dougSF70··on Westfield Walks Away from Downtown San Francisco Mall Property
The lenders need to revalue the properties so as to lower rents. This could bring an influx of independent stores in. However, downgrading of commercial real estate does have broader ramifications
dougSF70··on SoftBank-backed pizza startup shuts down after raising $445M
This is what I don't understand, the capital cost of a machine to replace humans only works if the productivity multiplier > amortized capital cost / annual labor cost. However there must be a limit to the multiplier due to market constraints...what if you can produce 10x pizzas but the demand isnt there. I have come to learn that individually start ups are just experiments and they only make it sense as a collective asset class.
dougSF70··on Spore Stats
Funny story. I worked at a firm that was commissioned to do some market research on Spore before its launch. We were given some videos of game play elements to show gamers and get their response to the game ahead of launch. We hosted the videos on our company server and scripted an online survey with the videos embedded in them. Participants could watch the videos and then answer questions.

We launched the survey on a Friday to pick up responses over the weekend. When I got to work on Monday I logged on to my computer and noticed that everything was running really slowly. Wasn't just me, my coworkers were experiencing the same network issue.

We got out IT team to investigate...turns out our server (on-prem) was busily handling a lot of network traffic, serving up video links to folks. Someone answering the survey had copied the links to the videos from the survey and posted them on to Kotaku. Since the game was so hyped the post got a lot of interest and our server got a lot of traffic.

As you can imagine, the next 24 hours was spent eating *@#t and apologizing to the client....

dougSF70··on WeWork has frittered away $46.7B in value as the stock sinks below ¢50
This is exactly what some VC firms do. They are interested in generating returns for their investors, if the company trades to zero after an IPO they will have already generated a significant return.
dougSF70··on Show HN: Oblivus GPU Cloud – Affordable and scalable GPU servers from $0.29/hr
Also, Datacenter GPUs only have passive cooling, presumably to allow for more Cuda cores. I get that what I have is older tech but for the cost of one H100 GPU I can have 60 of these servers (600 GPUs) plus some change to pay for CoLo fees.
dougSF70··on Show HN: Oblivus GPU Cloud – Affordable and scalable GPU servers from $0.29/hr
I bought these from a Chinese internet firm. They dismantled their data center and I am buying it.
