doubleplus··on Only for non-hackers: How do you benefit from Hacker News?
I get references to lots of great blog posts, online tools, and news items that allow me to stay informed about important issues in the tech and programming worlds. This has saved me countless amounts of time, since I'm able to act as if I know what I'm talking about without ever having to put in any effort/thought of my own. Thanks Hacker News! :)
doubleplus··on Learning Math
Thanks for posting this... bookmarking it for the answers. I'm early-thirties, too, and while I finished the first year of calculus (10 years ago!), I screwed up and got a PoliSci degree. Now I'm looking at maybe going back for CS, but I need to relearn trig and calc so I can finish the physics and diff equations prereqs. It would be nice to not have to spend a year retaking the classes.

Grr. I just interviewed for a position at Yahoo on Wednesday.
doubleplus··on Ask YC: What do you think of this novel chess-like strategy game?
my 2 cents on the strategy tip:

I'd turtle... Don't increase any of the 1's, move everything up one rank, then bounce pieces back and forth to the first rank, keeping each piece within 1 of at least two other pieces. I might have to have a couple 2's on the edges. That, or I'd try to restructure to a 3x5(+1) rather than a 2x8. I'd eventually have to increase a few numbers and break the shell a little bit, but by then my opponent will have far fewer 1's and a much more unstable structure from his attacks on me.
