dottjt··on The year I didn't survive
While not quite the same, my partner was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer a few months ago, a few days after my daughter's 1st birthday.

I think one thing I worry about is my daughter possibly not growing up with a mother. Like how that will affect her.

It's been traumatic for myself personally, but it hasn't been ...I'm still highly functional and I'm still continuing to live life to the fullest.

dottjt··on Working from home is here to stay
I think you'll find those same people were wasting an equal amount of time in the work place as well. They just find other ways. I know one guy who was writing their novel at work, because it only requires a computer/is discrete.

As someone who was once a young weed smoker, I get the sense that this is more correlation than causation. I know as many failures as I do successes from this position.

Those who have been failures were going to be failures anyway irrespective of whether they smoked weed or not, as was the case for those who ended up successful.

With that said, I don't deny that weed smoking at a young age would likely affect your brain negatively. But I don't think it determines what your outcome will be.

dottjt··on Ask HN: Songwriters, what software do you use?
This is actually an area that I find a little frustrating.

Generally to produce music you need to use a DAW. Ableton, Logic Pro etc. What sucks is you can't easily just assign a lyric to a note. Like it's just not a feature they provide.

It's something you can do in MuseScore because it uses traditional notation, but it would be great to be able to do it in something like Ableton.

dottjt··on 'Once-in-a-century' discovery reveals luxury of Pompeii
I don't know if this is a silly train of thought, but won't Pompeii just get buried again in the future? Is it a waste of time to try and unbury it?
dottjt··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
It's that "in almost every case" that's the problem. The whole point of insurance is to cover that case where it does happen, irrespective of how unlikely it is.

Case in point, my partner was diagnosed with a very, very, very rare terminal cancer at 32. Insurance turned out to be a great investment for us.

dottjt··on 43K fewer drivers on Manhattan roads after congestion pricing turned on
Again, public transport is usually not feasible if you have a severe medical condition.
dottjt··on 43K fewer drivers on Manhattan roads after congestion pricing turned on
Not if you're poor. $9 daily would be quite a lot for poor people, especially since radiation is daily. Furthermore you often have no choice but to use paid hospital parking due to mobility issues, as opposed to cheaper parking near the hospital.
dottjt··on 43K fewer drivers on Manhattan roads after congestion pricing turned on
Yeah, but why should one have to pay more to use roads they have no options but to use?
dottjt··on 43K fewer drivers on Manhattan roads after congestion pricing turned on
I think an issue with this kind of policy (not necessarily in Manhattan) but in other cities is that often there is no alternative other than to drive to the city.

For example, my partner needs radiation for her cancer and the hospital is located in the city. There is no other option than to drive. I feel like this type of policy negatively affects people in this situation, with no other alternative.

I agree with your rebuttal in response to that other person's comment, but ultimately I do think those programs are regressive for the poor, at this very point in time.

I guess the question becomes, should those poorest suffer for the betterment of all future generations? I would personally say no.

dottjt··on Who killed the rave?
The reason is growing inequality. Those are just symptoms of it.
dottjt··on If not React, then what?
As someone who's been doing React since the beginning, I would agree that it's hard starting out.

However, I think any new paradigm is difficult starting out. Recently I've been learning OO for work and I've been finding it stupidly hard and entirely unintuitive.

dottjt··on Leaving and Waving
Growing up I didn't really know my father. He was an alcoholic and spent his time with his friends drinking when I was young. My parents separated when I was around 8 years old and I haven't seen my father since, even till this day (I am around 30).

I was never really close with my mother. We would eat dinner in separate rooms. We grew more and more distant throughout my teen years and when I was 20 I decided to disown her and we're now estranged.

There were multiple attempts to "get back" but none were successful. I think what I realised in the end was that she was too much of a free spirit. She wanted to have her separate life and have me co-exist in it, without dedicating herself to me like a parent normally would.

I don't think I'll miss them or feeling anything for them when they pass. My mother, maybe a little. My father, not at all. But I don't forsee being at her death bed, even if she told me she was dying. Maybe I'm just stubborn or am held captive by a matter of "principle and integrity". If a relationship is cut off, then it's cut off. Meaning you both have to deal with the good and the bad. I've decided there's more good than bad.

In some senses it feels like I never had parents at all. Like there's nothing to miss, because how can one miss an absence?

I hope though to be the parent I never had to my daughter. Unfortunately my partner has stage 4 cancer so won't be around for most of my daughter's life at a very young age, but that's okay. This is life and life is me.

dottjt··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
I think you should pursue anything you're interested in.

I don't have the best singing voice, but after a few years of learning how to sing, it's like I finally "get it". It used to be this very mystical thing, but now I realise how to use my body to sing properly.

My partner is undergoing chemo for stage 4 sarcoma and co-incidentally, my 13 month old happened to get sick on the day my partner started (around 2 weeks ago)

Looking after a sick toddler by myself, whilst also trying to juggle WFH has been... I haven't felt this level of depression and hopeless since my early 20s. I've never been more overwhelmed in my life.

Honestly, there is no coping mechanism in that scenario. You're being pulled from 20 different directions, the house is a mess, you're emotionally a wreck. It honestly feels impossible.

Thankfully yesterday I was finally able to put her into daycare and the weight that was lifted from my shoulders was immense.

I'm honestly worried for the future and I might just have to quit my job if it comes to it. But that's just life. I never knew it could be so brutal.

dottjt··on Scientists glue two proteins together, driving cancer cells to self-destruct
Thank you. Did any readings or practices help you?
dottjt··on Scientists glue two proteins together, driving cancer cells to self-destruct
Thank you. I can relate to everything you're saying.

I think what's been helping has been reading about death and what that means and potentially feels like. I think part of the issue is that the topic of death is so misunderstood and feared, that it creates no reasonable way forward mentally. So hopefully I can learn more about that over the coming weeks.

dottjt··on Scientists glue two proteins together, driving cancer cells to self-destruct
It's been a very weird 6 weeks. It's like, everything was fine. We had our normal suburban life. Things were going great. We had just celebrated our daughter's first birthday.

Then it's like, you realise that everything you had imagined over the next 40 - 50 years is suddenly not going to happen anymore, and it just feels so surreal.

Thankfully, a lot of the initial hysteria is gone. But there's definitely a sense of "why me?"

dottjt··on Scientists glue two proteins together, driving cancer cells to self-destruct
Hopefully it can help people with Sarcomas.

My partner was diagnosed with stage 4 sarcoma about a month ago and life as I know it has been flipped upside down.

dottjt··on Life, death, and retirement
I found out a week ago that my partner has stage 4 sarcoma. The prognosis is poor. It's been difficult because we have a 1 year old toddler, so naturally we can't go out and do something big without it affecting them. Furthermore, the cancer has inhibited her ability to move.

At first it was complete shock. The next few days were complete confusion and sadness. However, I think one thing you learn pretty quickly is that acceptance is the only path forward, and that if you don't accept early, you will only get worse. I'm really grateful that I've had many, many years of therapy prior to this, so that I at least can identify the tools to bring me back out of the grief.

I would say that I'm somewhat stable now. I don't necessarily fear what might happen in the future, although grim. Have my feelings changed? Not necessarily, but they don't affect me in the same way they used to. I let them be there, however I do not attempt to push them away or let them consume me. A few days prior I would struggle to wake up in the morning, however after going through therapy I can usually wake up early.

If anyone is struggling, I would recommend a book called "The Happiness Trap" it's been instrumental in getting my mind back on track.

dottjt··on Notion's mid-life crisis
I think once I started using databases it made other note-taking tools seem primitive in comparison. It's hard to explain why, but it just allows you to organise and categorise hundreds of notes seamlessly.

I also really like how it treats everything as blocks, that's another thing that I can no longer live without.

If you're not interested in features like this, then yeah. Obsidian would be a good use-case.

dottjt··on Finding a therapist who takes your insurance can be nearly impossible
This is not to be taken as mental health advice (merely an anecdote), but yesterday I was thinking about needing therapy to deal with my issues and I had the thought to use ChatGPT. Wow, it was absolutely incredible in providing me with what I needed.

I think therapy with a professional would be really useful if you have no idea what your problem is, but I think if you're able to put your problem into words then LLMs can be useful.

dottjt··on Why is Sweden paying grandparents to babysit?
I think another side-effect of this is that parents no longer want their active grand parents to participate in looking after their children.

All their ideas about how to bring up children are completely outdated by modern standards, so it's just constant fighting over how things should be done, so we don't even bother getting them involved.

dottjt··on Enhancing the New York Times Web Performance with React 18
You say it with cynicism, but ultimately React jobs pay better vs jobs which require only common HTML/CSS skills. Why wouldn't programmers want to pursue better paying/more readily available jobs?
dottjt··on React 19 almost made the internet slower
I'm currently learning Angular and it's an absolute dumpster fire of a framework in the sense that it offers no clear philosophy. It's just a jumbled mess of concepts and syntax.

I think where it shines though is that it's completely batteries included, which I can see being useful for large enterprises where it's near impossible to change things.

Having recently worked on a very legacy React app, it became apparent to me the value of frameworks like Angular. If you can maintain it and upgrade it gradually, React is arguably the better choice. But if you're leaving it to stagnate, Angular is a far better proposition.
