Hamas claims that the journalists are Hamas, not Israel. And I'm not declaring any journalist "good" or "bad". I'm stating that a Hamas member is a valid target. Him moonlighting as a journalist does not change that.

Israel never set out to exterminate, Israel set out to get her hostages back - including babies under a year old.

You know who did set out to exterminate? Hamas, who in their very own charter state their intention to eradicate the Jews: https://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/hamas.asp

I suggest reading this article which explains the propaganda campaigns that followed the October 7th attacks on Israel: https://www.adl.org/resources/article/hamas-its-own-words

Only one side is calling for genocide, and it is the Arab side - propaganda and disinformation campaigns aside.

Your Holocaust inversion is not only morally wrong, it is also factually incorrect.

I was waiting to see how long it took for someone to "make this about Palestine" - their strategy is to inundate all discussion with the topic.

Over half the journalists in the Gaza Strip are affiliated with Hamas. Many of them infiltrated Israel in 2023, and some of them held Israeli hostages in their homes, including children hostages.

Me too. I don't connect my phone to my Google account. I understand that the Play store is enticing, but there are other options. Some of which are actually better.

  > failsafe timers and dead-man switches when testing new things.
Aircraft and spacecraft are more than anything, mass constrained. Such failsafes are welcome in software, but neither the bleeding-edge engineers not even the test pilots would support adding failsafe mass if it would affect the tests.
dotancohen··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
Details, details. That's mearly an implementation issue.
dotancohen··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
This is probably one of the most important comments on HN, seriously. A concise summary that once we get the model right, the emergent behaviour matches observations.

Very reminiscent of the Casimir effect experiments.

No, the AI is still our responsibility.

Or he believes that other labs might get there first, and he is working to counter that threat.

This is the Manhattan Project again.

Though it's not the real acronym, Larry Ellison himself has stated that Oracle stands for One Real Asshole Called Larry Ellison. He famously prides himself on it.
dotancohen··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
Why Libreoffice? Does your diary contain advanced formatting, tables, images, or other involved content? Or just for the encryption?

I ask because I also keep a diary and have refined how I store it and secure it, over 25+ years. Only recently did I find something that I like better than paper.

They have absolutely zero regard for system resources. I understand why, but such things were once considered unfeasible - and very recently were also considered undesirable.

I still use a laptop with a 100 GiB hard drive - only 80 of which are allocated to the /home/ directory. This would cut into the useable space significantly on that machine. How about Chromebooks?

Thank you
dotancohen··on You Don't Have a Right to Safe Drinking Water, US Court Rules
The rhetorical trick was not mine. There are numerous people in this comment thread that used the word guarantee as a synonym or implied outcome of the word right.

What do you think a right is, if not a guarantee?

dotancohen··on You Don't Have a Right to Safe Drinking Water, US Court Rules
That's why I said "one of the considerations for establishing a community".

  > Worrying about pottable water should be a solved problem in a first world country.
I see that you've never lived somewhere with water scarcity.
dotancohen··on Babylonian Lamb Stew with Beets (1750–1730 BCE)
Very likely from Pomodoro. In Arabic P is pronounced B or F.

Are the Vietnamese and Chinese languages related? Or perhaps one of the two cultures was introduced to that fruit by the other, and thus preserved the name?
dotancohen··on Babylonian Lamb Stew with Beets (1750–1730 BCE)
Interesting, thank you.

Thank you! In Hebrew we literally call the potato תפוח אדמה which is "ground apple". Now I know where the idea comes from.

The recorded English-language etymology for "ketchup" suggests that the word comes from one of the Chinese dialect's word for tomato. Do you have any idea which Chinese word sounds like ketchup?
dotancohen··on Babylonian Lamb Stew with Beets (1750–1730 BCE)

  > On that note, in Arabic, Farsi, and Hindustani the word for Tomato is essentially shared (tumatar/tamatimu) with the English word "tomato".
In the Levant we use the word بندورا "bindora" in Arabic for tomato.
dotancohen··on UN backs new map showing Africa's true relative size with US alone in opposition
The old map's Africa looks just like Africa on my globe. I understand that the new Africa is bigger, but it no longer looks like the real shape of Africa on planet Earth.

When I look at a map - political or geographic - my primary observation is the shapes of the nations or landforms. Not the size.

dotancohen··on Hackers have withdrawn ~4k BTC (~$320M) from the Liquid Federation wallet
That is a natural consequence of banks and governments losing power. That power balance shifts towards the citizens... some of whom are criminals.

The coin fanboys will argue that the bankers and government were criminals as well.

dotancohen··on You Don't Have a Right to Safe Drinking Water, US Court Rules
What national government _does_ guarantee safe drinking water to its citizens? You are attacking the legitimacy of the US government by holding it to a standard that no nation on Earth is held to.

The US has regulations and they are enforced, with some local problems. Just like every other nation on Earth.

  > Stop editing your ridiculous comment.
Do I not have a right to add that second sentence to my comment? Are you offended by me exercising that right?

Your demand is ridiculous, doubly so in a conversation about rights.

dotancohen··on You Don't Have a Right to Safe Drinking Water, US Court Rules
I've been to a few islands that must import bottled drinking water. The citizens themselves do, not the government.

I actually got stuck on one such island once, for one night with my then-twelve-year-old. First thing we did after securing a place to sleep, was acquire water.

dotancohen··on You Don't Have a Right to Safe Drinking Water, US Court Rules
If a place is especially dry or inaccessible, then the lack of water should be one of the considerations for establishing a community there. This idea that no matter the expense or engineering constraints, the government must drag out the pipes and infrastructure to your private retreat, will be putting people in dangerous situations and a complete waste of scarce resources.

I think that perhaps you don't understand what a right means, in the context of government services.

Or are you suggesting that common people are littering vandals?
