Based on your attitude, bcjdjsndon is probably correct.
dosisking··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra for a big leap in performance and AI compute
> They're a hardware company first

More specifically, they're a hardware dongle company first

> AI has made my life more productive and I could use the time it's saved me to go for a run, but here I am.

So in reality, AI has not changed your productivity at all, because you are using the extra time you saved to post on HN

dosisking··on Z80 – The 1970s Microprocessor Still Alive (2021)
> If the Zilog engineers would have been free to design their own ISA I'm sure they would have been able to come up with a much more elegant design.

Since Zilog was founded by former Intel engineers, they were probably the ones who helped design the 8080 in the first place?

dosisking··on Z80 – The 1970s Microprocessor Still Alive (2021)
This is understandable, considering that the M5 is the Ultimate Computer, powered by Dr. Richard Daystrom's very own engrams
dosisking··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
The law means nothing. The law is "interpreted" by judges. If the government wants you to be guilty, they will find a way to make that happen. They don't care about the rule of law. The US has a 99% conviction rate, highest ever in recorded history.
dosisking··on CIA funding helped keep NeXT afloat in the 80s
> Let's hope this establishment is flexible enough to handle the climate crisis. The solutions proposed so far include more colonization (of other planets) and more castles/bunkers (in remote locations) - there must be better ways to deal with a climate crisis.

Their solution to the climate crisis is to build as many AI data centers as possible. Turns out they never cared about the climate crisis in the first place, and only wanted to use it to gain power. But now that they have AI, they don't need the climate crisis narrative anymore.

dosisking··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
Covid taught me just how stupid society is
dosisking··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
> Because we're depressed at being surrounded by stupidity

And then we visit websites like HN, filled with people who think they are smart.

I don't mind a stupid person who knows they are stupid, but I despise the so-called 'expert' who is wrong, but society considers that person to be the authority

dosisking··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
> I didn't need to worry about finding a job, smart people always find work.

People don't like to hire people who are smarter than them. They want to hire people who are obedient and competent.

If you are too smart, the government will probably put you in prison, if you challenge the status quo and are not obedient.

dosisking··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
> There are genius level kids that are at another plane of intellectual existence. It’s quite something to see.

It does not require genius level intelligence to do Calculus. It takes a genius to discover Calculus in the first place. Genius refers more to curiosity in my opinion, and not being able to do something at a young age.

dosisking··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
And who determines the price if there is no publicly traded market?
dosisking··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
So you bought at 125k? That would have been a pretty good short
dosisking··on I used to be excited about new tech, but I rarely am anymore
eBikes may be pretty amazing in isolation, but as a pedestrian, I absolutely hate people who ride eBikes.
dosisking··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)

dosisking··on Models Are Getting Dumber on Purpose
> I think the vast majority of people do want general purpose models. They want to be able to ask it any question, or ask it to perform any task, and for it to do a decent job at it.

The vast majority of people listen to the music of Ed Sheeran and think that it is good.

dosisking··on South Korea proposes talks to officially end war with North
> Deter the US from what exactly?

Just in case this is a serious question, the US has invaded Iran and Venezuela most recently. The US previously invaded Iraq. What do they have in common? They don't have nukes.

dosisking··on What happens when an LLM never sees material beyond fifth grade?
You've hit on an important insight.
dosisking··on Software Engineering fundamentals matter more
There are two 'camps' with respect to AI.

One camp already knows that Neural Nets don't work and are a dead end.

The other camp hasn't yet figured out that Neural Nets don't work, but are convinced that they do (or eventually will), because they think everything always improves over time in a linear fashion.

dosisking··on Why Target Common Lisp for Code Generation?
FreeBSD yes, Linux no
dosisking··on What's the best programming language for coding agents?
> This is very different from Python, where training data is polluted (I presume) with tons of code written by non-software engineers and demonstrating many different ways of doing the same thing.

Python's philosophy is there is one way to do it, as opposed to Perl's TIMTOWTDI.

Your statement also assumes that 'software engineers' write the best code, and from my experience, this is definitely not true

I believe the training data should simply be limited to only code written by someone like Fabrice Ballard, or whoever you think writes the best code.

dosisking··on New Zealand lost its music media, and what we're building to replace it
2 weeks to flatten the curve
dosisking··on New Zealand lost its music media, and what we're building to replace it
> Did the US reach 450k deaths in a single year? Wow, and there are still those who call it a hoax?

Miraculously, there were 0 flu deaths that year

dosisking··on New Zealand lost its music media, and what we're building to replace it
San Fran, who turned out to be a man

Flo had to go, I couldn't go with the flow

dosisking··on Oracle bans AI-generated code from OpenJDK
> Legal departments are ironically very much like LLMs.

Replacing legal departments with LLMs is probably the best use-case for LLMs.

Using LLMs for coding is a waste of time and a dead end, however using LLMs for legal stuff would make the world a better place.

dosisking··on How to Make a Nintendo 64 Game in 2026
Hey, that rhymes
dosisking··on Software development with AI is starting to feel like cooking steak
The only thing that is hard to cook is Creme Brulee. Pretty much every chef I have ever worked with did it wrong.
dosisking··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
> the internals seem remarkably well thought out

You could not design a worse system than Android, even if you tried to design the worst system possible
