But any extra courses/trainings is always appreciated

dookahku··on Tokyo street fashion and culture: 1980 – 2017
So, wait, what are we looking at?

https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/beta/

Is this like a Medium.com content publishing platform?

From the about page:

EXPLORE COLLECTIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD WITH GOOGLE
ARTS & CULTURE, CREATED BY GOOGLE CULTURAL INSTITUTE.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Cultural_Institute
dookahku··on TIO: Try it online
confirmed. Chrome 59.0.3071.115 on Mac back button is broken.

cool site, tho

dookahku··on Segment raises $64M led by Y Combinator
So if I'm reading Segment's page correctly, Segment is a service that reads other API data and warehouses it into a single place to be read later?

I feel like I'm missing a lot of the picture. :)

dookahku··on The Uber Bombshell About to Drop
Not so much buying one, but if you really do own one, then you can rent your car out autonomously. Ford, GM and others have mentioned this is the plan, so Uber's model is really junked because everyone is an uber/lyft.
dookahku··on The Uber Bombshell About to Drop
Mostly because you're in a competition with everyone who sells cars; a commodity business. That's hard.

What is a startup? Poised for explosive growth. Are commodity businesses poised for that growth? No.

dookahku··on The Uber Bombshell About to Drop
They're not. Every major car company plus competitors are focusing on self-driving cars. Why pay a human what a machine can do for cheaper? Uber's future depends on being first with self driving cars.

Being a good taxi company in the 21st century will mean good at self-driving cars.

dookahku··on Ask HN: Best book/document you've seen explaining a code base
I'll check it out

Edit: OK, I was looking at his amazon page; he's very prolific.

I found his website: http://www.alstevens.com/

He writes mystery novels, books on ventriloquism, diabetes. A ton. I'm more than a little fascinated now!

dookahku··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2016)
Be prepared to spend 30 - 60 minutes filling out forms and also taking a 'culture fit', 'numerical analysis,' and 'verbal' test.

So far I've spent about 40 minutes applying to 1 job.

Edit: 60 minutes

I do want to work there so I'm going to do it anyways.

EDIT EDIT:

I wish I could say it was one of those tests where I learned something even when I failed. Good to see my Masters in CS from Stanford has no value to Ford.

>Our records indicate that you have completed the web-based assessments for the <position> in Palo Alto, CA position with Ford Motor Company. We regret to inform you that your results did not meet our requirements.

dookahku··on Old Geek
Why hire someone with 10+ years of experience over all when we can hire someone with 3-5 years of experience in our tech stack?

Or so it's been explained to me.

dookahku··on Old Geek
I will confess to being cynical but they need more engineers than C*Os.

My time is almost over.

dookahku··on Old Geek
Today, an interviewer put it to me this way:

> Why would we pay for someone with 10 years of generalist experience overall when we could hire someone with 5 years of experience in technology X.

They nominally claim to hire smart, generalist engineers.

dookahku··on The Loomio Cooperative Handbook: How we run a worker-owned tech startup
So I have a project I'm working on now that could potentially be useful and commercial.

I'm not looking to be a billionaire but I would like to have a steady, comfortable source of income.

How easy is it to form the legal structure? I don't imagine legalzoom has the forms I need.

How do you get early managers in on this? I've had terrible managers I felt really weren't interested in development.

dookahku··on DeepHeart: A Neural Network for Predicting Cardiac Health
How did you find this data, or this competition? I wouldn't mind trying my hand at this, either.
dookahku··on “I built a fusion reactor in my bedroom – AMA”
Same thing happened to me. I almost dropped out of HS because I got admitted to college early. I was administered a 'residual' ACT and was admitted.

The counselor told me people wouldn't want to hire me if I didn't have a diploma or a college degree if things didn't work out.

I honestly believe the counselor was looking out for me and wasn't incompetent, but christ I wish I hadn't listened to him.

dookahku··on Amazon SimpleDB – Simple Database Service
I've been looking for document stores. I was surprised I hadn't heard of SimpleDB before.
dookahku··on Iris Automation (YC S16) gives drones situational awareness to fly autonomously
So how does it work?

Is it a sort of SLAM algorithm?

dookahku··on Alan Kay has agreed to do an AMA today
Seems like a good a strategy as any. :) Thanks for the pointer!
dookahku··on Alan Kay has agreed to do an AMA today
I will endeavour to consider your advice and move my mind from the margins to the center. Thank you!
dookahku··on Alan Kay has agreed to do an AMA today
You invented a lot of what I'm using this very instant to compose this message.

I yearn to do great works of engineering and art, which I consider what you have done.

How do you come up with ideas?

dookahku··on Ask HN: I don't enjoy being a CTO. Now what?
How do you advance to leadership roles?

I try to pursue it when it seems like it appears in companies I'm around but it feels mostly like crapshoot.

My other best guess is start my own company, which I think about all the time.

dookahku··on Why Dividing by Zero Makes a Mechanical Calculator Go Berserk
It's interesting enough to know that I could possibly void my warranty by dividing by zero, rather than throw an annoying exception.
dookahku··on I Am Sam Altman, President of Y Combinator. AMA
Hi, Sam,

Many of the HW people I see on YC focus on consumer applications.

How does YC feel about more 'b2b' applications, like nuclear seals for the IAEA, or industrial things?

dookahku··on Saving Hundreds of Hours with Google Compute Engine Per-Minute Billing
> and no FUSE module in the kernel

FUSE typically has a lot of latency for context switches, or so I under stood it. Is it possible to make a native driver?

dookahku··on Ask Us Anything: Y Combinator Hardware Companies Crowdfunding
I've lots of embedded linux experience. It's less consumerist products but more embedded systems experience.

Where do I find people's problems to solve that can be addressed by HW?

dookahku··on Tor: 'Mystery' spike in hidden addresses
Starting with Tor version 0.2.7.1 it is possible, through Tor's control socket API, to create and destroy 'ephemeral' hidden services programmatically. Bitcoin Core has been updated to make use of this.

This means that if Tor is running (and proper authorization is available), Bitcoin Core automatically creates a hidden service to listen on, without manual configuration. Bitcoin Core will also use Tor automatically to connect to other .onion nodes if the control socket can be successfully opened. This will positively affect the number of available .onion nodes and their usage.

This new feature is enabled by default if Bitcoin Core is listening, and a connection to Tor can be made. It can be configured with the -listenonion, -torcontrol and -torpassword settings. To show verbose debugging information, pass -debug=tor.

dookahku··on My Little Sister Taught Me How to “Snapchat Like the Teens”
I never really understood how snapchat works. I don't know anyone on it, how do I add people? The only snaps I got were from the Snapchat Team itself.
