I wish more authors would publish the markdown or asciidoc. I'd pay for it.
I like the book "The Little Schemer" to learn recursion. Yes, a whole book to learn something other books briefly throw at you. You will not regret the read.
Just ignore it until they offer money for your supposed IP.
Build an easy 2 hour project in the technology. Like a basic bug tracker. Dive in knowing nothing, no learning first. Consult google as you go.
I need to build something first, then read little bits here and there. Eventually sitting down to learn the "proper" way to use the technology.
This is probably it.
If you're a serious developer you probably have a permanent work station. With big monitors, a nice chair, a proper keyboard, etc. Sure you can dock a laptop into that, but why not have your cake and eat it too? Use a laptop on the go, and a desktop for the fixed workstation.
This is the git age. It's trivial to share work across a fixed desktop and a laptop. No need to sacrifice power for portability. Go for the superior space/cooling potential of the desktop at your workstation.
http://www.defmacro.org/ramblings/lisp.html
It compares lisp to XML. In that you are programming in a tree. Other languages must be parsed into a tree by the compiler, but with lisp you are already there from the get go.
Programming in a tree is the "magic" that's unique to lisp. And it is a big deal.

Even if your biases about each company are generally accurate, they may not be accurate for the wing of the company you will work in. I'd give priority to your personal wealth.
Your point of concern should be with management, not the developer. But you only talk about the developer?
I'd step off that high horse.
I bet you use a credit card on the regular. All your purchases permanently recorded. And can be looked up on demand.
I bet you talk on a phone everyday. Every convo permanently saved and can be brought up on demand. Your face-to-face conversations can be listened to even when you turn off your phone, although that does not happen passively.
I bet you use the internet in such away that identifies yourself. Having your porn preferences permanently saved so they can be brought up on demand.
I bet you use google search. Everything you ever looked for permanently saved and can be brought up on demand.
I bet you use gmail, or some other email service.
Almost everyone gives up freedom for convenience. Unless you're living like a medieval monk you're just as mentally disordered.
Just have a mirror on github and they'll be none the wiser. Judging by how many people think linux is developed on github.
Dude. I'm using software that hasn't been maintained since 1983. You're worried about 2015?
The really interesting stuff usually requires deeper knowledge and skills. For problems worth solving, 15 years experience as a CRUD developer is no better than 15 years experience as a project manager. Making this career change won't necessarily help you gain the skills you want.
For a while google displayed real estate for sale on google maps. I can't quite put my finger on exactly why (maybe that it was google maps), but it was much more useful than the standard real-estate sites. Was sad to see it go.
And although you're talking about solo... There's was a 2-man dream team in the DC area. Not sure if they're still working. They would tackle any project and get it done fast. Any language or tech stack. Design docs, requirements, working project, everything. They tackled in-distress projects where a large team and multi-million dollar budge failed.
I'm just a guest, not a host. No horror stories on my side. All the hosts have been awesome.
And maybe some sort of "steroid" release with no negative side effects. To improve regeneration. Steroids are a "Jesus" level miracle of medicine. They have literally cured the blind. If this sort of regeneration was built into our bodies it would be pretty cool.
