donbrae··on Show HN: The Brutalist Report – A rolling snapshot of the day’s headlines
Great work. Will bookmark. I built something similarly no-nonsense and text-based for pro wrestling news: https://www.wrestle.buzz.
donbrae··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
Made an HTML5/JS puzzle game: https://www.tripodsgame.com. No expectation of it making any money. (That said I do daydream of the NYT buying it lol.)
donbrae··on The Basilikon Doron of King James VI and I
Indeed: the current Queen is Elizabeth II of England, but Elizabeth I of Scots as well as the United Kingdom.
donbrae··on The Revenge of the Hot Water Bottle
I sit with a hot water bottle all day at my desk during the winter months. Really works well and is cheaper than running the heating all the time.
donbrae··on Interactive piano reference to major and minor scales
Looks like it’s using Tone.js[0] with a sample library called ‘Salamander Grand Piano V3’[1].

Tone.js is great. I’m using it to convert MIDI files and sync visuals on a jazz piano tutorial website I’m building[2].

donbrae··on BuzzFeed to go public, after shareholders approve SPAC deal
Is BuzzFeed actually clickbait, though? If you mean that the headline makes you want to click to read the article, then I guess it is. But that’s no different to any website.

Looking at the home page just now, BuzzFeed doesn’t seem to make outlandish claims or promises in the headline or accompanying image that aren’t then delivered in the article.

It’s all pretty silly, of course, but the content seems to match the headline in the items I clicked on. This makes sense if the goal is to get folk sharing BuzzFeed content on social media: if the content was a letdown, it wouldn’t be shared.

I seem to remember Ben Thompson talking about this common misconception on his podcast years ago.

donbrae··on Get started making music
Is your phone muted? I assume this is using the Web Audio API, which doesn’t sound on iOS if the iDevice is muted (requires a hack of playing silent HTML5 Audio in the background).
donbrae··on Strange domain names that developers bought
I bought a few cool domains over the past couple of years for side projects: wrestle.buzz, scots.app, jazzkeys.fyi and jamieonkeys.dev. My favourite (joke) domain is Marco Arment’s bad.coffee :D
donbrae··on Firefox 91 introduces enhanced cookie clearing
That is simply incorrect. I personally know people whose first language is Scots. It was the first language they learned and they use it every day.
donbrae··on Firefox 91 introduces enhanced cookie clearing
Not a book but I run a blog written in Scots: https://makforrit.scot.
donbrae··on Firefox 91 introduces enhanced cookie clearing
As a Scots speaker I would object vehemently to my language being classified as a dialect of ‘British’, or any other language for that matter.
donbrae··on Firefox 91 introduces enhanced cookie clearing
Scottish English != Scots. The former is just English with a Scottish accent; the latter is a closely related (to English) but distinct language with its own vocabulary and grammar, not dissimilar to the relationship between Norwegian and Danish, or Czech and Slovak.

Scots being a language has nothing to do with suppressing Gaelic. Generally people who hate Gaelic hate Scots equally.

donbrae··on Half of UK university students think degree is poor value for money
Looks like it does: “Students from Scotland are again the most positive, but there has been a statistically significant (6%) fall this year.”[1]

However fees are only paid by the government if a Scottish student (including those from elsewhere the EU, at least before Brexit) studies in Scotland; not if they study elsewhere in the UK.

donbrae··on HBO Max accidentally sent an integration email test to users
I did similar in Mac Mail a few years ago: it caused an out-of-office reply to be sent to every email I’d ever sent going back years. I was surprised Mail allowed for this scenario. Needless to say, my holiday got off to a stressful start!
donbrae··on Spatial Audio
I imagine the artist approved a (stereo) mix they heard on decent studio monitors and maybe stereo headphones too. I’m not sure how they’d feel about someone else then creating an atmos/spacial audio version without their involvement. Mixing is integral to the artistic part of making recorded music.

I’d be interested to know whether the tracks appearing on Apple Music are being created from the original tracks/stems (i.e. properly remixed), or whether an algorithm is being applied to the same stereo mixdown that would have created a standard (stereo) master.

donbrae··on Firefox Release 89.0
I notice on macOS that Firefox now finally has the standard ‘rubber banding’/bounce effect when you scroll past the start/end of the page or text field content.
donbrae··on We’ll stop selling our Code Editor app for iOS soon
Wow, you can actually use iSH to install PHP, run `php -S localhost:8080` and view index.php or whatever in Safari. I had no idea this was possible on iOS. Thanks!
donbrae··on Show HN: Tripods – An HTML5 Puzzle Game
I used the latest lockdown to finally finish a puzzle game I started making a few years back. Feedback welcome! (If you’re interested the code is at https://github.com/donbrae/tripods-web, too.)
donbrae··on Is Being Salaried a Scam?
I work 31 hours over four days, which I guess is somewhere between part time and full time. For comparison, the standard, full-time working week here (Scotland) for private- and public-sector office-based jobs is 35 or 37.5 hours. (I choose to work less so I can spend more time on side-projects that make no money.)
donbrae··on Beeple Mania
Been a fan of his work for a few years now. He let me use a couple of his pieces as album art. Seems like a cool guy and it’s great to see his continued success.
donbrae··on Nearly half of adult Canadians struggle with literacy
Surely being literate is simply being able to read and write coherently? Whether you read books, the Economist, academic papers, Hacker News, or whatever, I don't see how it matters.
donbrae··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
An educational website for jazz pianists: https://www.jazzkeys.fyi. The landing page is online to collect emails and meantime I'm working on content.

I'm also finishing a puzzle game I started a while back.

donbrae··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
https://www.jazzkeys.fyi: a toolkit for jazz piano players. Landing page live; working on content in the background.
donbrae··on Happy New Year HN
A Guid New Year tae ane and aw!
donbrae··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
A shortcut to maximise the window: click the green icon while pressing Option.
donbrae··on SEO Is Gentrifying the Internet
Crap SEO content has been blighting the web for years now, of course, but I seem to remember it being worse in ~2008-10 with content farms like eHow and Mahalo spewing forth their garbage content in order to (successfully, for a time) game Google.
donbrae··on Ask HN: Was 20% time a good policy for Google's working culture?
SubmitHub is awesome! Used it to promote my last couple of EPs.
donbrae··on Why I Love Tailwind
I've not yet tried Tailwind, but I've found the utility classes in Bootstrap to be really useful. Over the years I've encountered a good number of instances on larger sites using traditional/global CSS where a change to a particular style ends up unintentionally affecting random stuff elsewhere. It's really irritating.
donbrae··on A spellchecker used to be a major feat of software engineering (2008)
I often write in a mixture of Scots and English, and spellcheckers are nae guid for that use case. The problem is solved, however, on iOS and Android thanks to SwiftKey[1].

donbrae··on Self-host your fonts for better performance
Mainly for performance reasons I've recently gone from using hosted/local Google Fonts to just calling the system ones (some variant of `-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,Segoe UI,Roboto,Oxygen,Ubuntu,Cantarell,Open Sans,Helvetica Neue`).
