donalhunt··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
Iran has indicated they will only target ships tied to countries that are involved in the conflict.

That likely means US and Israel. Unclear if countries like the UK that are facilitating the US through use of their bases would be considered legitimate targets (likely yes).

donalhunt··on Starlink Mini as a failover
There was a major storm that disrupted infrastructure across the west coast of Ireland last year. Turned out a lot of infrastructure couldn't survive multi-day grid power loss (water plants, cell tower repeaters, etc).

Starlink is a solid backup for mitigating the risk of such disruption by having no local dependencies other than ability to power the CPE.

donalhunt··on GB Renewables Map
Nice job dodging the awkwardness of whether to include Ireland, Northern Ireland, etc (IE and NI operate as a single, all-island wholesale electricity market). :)

donalhunt··on Okta's NextJS-0auth troubles
Seems the perfect opportunity to create a AI-generated "hackers" short with some prepared screenshots. /s
donalhunt··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
Most datacenters are fairly boring to be honest. The most exciting thing likely to happen is some sheet metal ripping your hand open because you didn't wear gloves.

Still have my "my other datacenter is made of razorblades and hate" sticker. \o/

donalhunt··on When I say “alphabetical order”, I mean “alphabetical order”
I've encountered a tangential problem to this with package versioning on Linux distros. Thankfully it was not too hard to write an algorithm to compare versions (thanks AI!).
donalhunt··on Debian 13, Postgres, and the US/* time zones
Tell that to Ireland where we observe Irish Standard Time during the summer (and GMT during the winter).
donalhunt··on Debian 13, Postgres, and the US/* time zones
What sort of monster are you by not defaulting to UTC on systems? (⊙_⊙') /s
donalhunt··on Ireland will not participate in Eurovision if Israel takes part
The Irish strategy is to make the pubs too attractive for any attacker to bother with armed conflict. ;)

The Irish position should not be underestimated. It tends to be a bellweather for what others will align with in the future. Ireland tends to use it's soft power very effectively at the global table.

donalhunt··on Six months into tariffs, businesses have no idea how to price anything
How many of them have MAGA-style slogans though? /s

It also disrupts JIT supply chains. Companies make decisions with certain variables not being volatile.

You now have a situation where one week the cost of a commodity is X and the following week it could be 2X. The butterfly effect across industries also cannot be predicted.

Many industries also seem to be still recovering from the pandemic period with supply of spare parts still being de-prioritised over making parts available for new units. :/

donalhunt··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City

In Ireland, jail time is rare for such offences sadly. In cases where jail time is sentenced, overcrowding in prisons often results in early release.

donalhunt··on The ROI of Exercise
From personal experience strength training has been key to recovering from injuries (caused by doing stupid things, not exercise itself). So maybe the correlation between exercise and pain is incorrect? The exercise is the cure to the pain...

https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-5753318/v1 (pre-print) seems to provide a strong argument for strength training being beneficial. My search was not thorough so likely more studies out there.

donalhunt··on How to make websites that will require lots of your time and energy
Anything that allows visitors to submit data to the website. Abuse actors will show up sooner or later.
donalhunt··on Android Earthquake Alerts: A global system for early warning
When Twitter had an open API, some tech teams actually used it as an additional source for detecting incidents that internal monitoring missed (similar to how electricity grid operators watch TV to understand when demand surges are going to occur due to half time in sports games, etc).
donalhunt··on Ryanair may increase commission to staff identifying oversized cabin bags
Ryanair's response (probably): have you tried getting a different passport?
donalhunt··on Ryanair may increase commission to staff identifying oversized cabin bags
The issue everyone is skirting around is that many aeroplanes don't actually have the capacity to allow every passenger to bring a carry-on onboard. Ryanair even acknowledge this by limiting the number of people booking their priority add-on.
donalhunt··on GCP Outage
They have irc services internally (or at least did when I was there 10-ish years ago).
donalhunt··on It's the end of observability as we know it (and I feel fine)
My stance has always been to lean on the available tools to free up time to work on the more interesting problems that deliver value to the organisation / company. Has been a good strategy to date.

Sadly, the current environment does not reflect that in my experience. There is a vicious focus on keeping profit margins at a steady rate at all costs while slashing spend on tooling which requires re-work on solved problems. :/

At some point the music is going to stop and it's not going to be pretty I suspect. :(

donalhunt··on VPN providers in France ordered to block pirate sports IPTV
Still happening in 2025. :/

One well-known US show started airing the current season in the UK (on a streaming service) — 7 weeks after it started airing in the US.

donalhunt··on De minimis: US small parcels loophole closes pushing up Shein, Temu prices
EU exemptions are gone afaik. Previously we had exemptions to avoid VAT / customs (much lower de minimus) but they have been removed in recent years. The shipping / customs industry has not evolved to support the volume of low value goods.
donalhunt··on Getting forked by Microsoft
The number one rule about creating clean source (and IP) is not to look at competing implementations / patents. Was drilled in to me by legal over the years to avoid such issues. Really easy to unconsciously incorporate ideas from other projects.

This is not that though. Seems to be exactly what the maintainer is asserting and that's not OK. :/

donalhunt··on Claim for a missing tooth
Should also incorporate "mind the gap" some how...
donalhunt··on Everyone knows all the apps on your phone
Would put money it on it using something like '?device_verified=1'.
donalhunt··on Ask for no, don't ask for yes (2022)
This is an important insight. While the "bias towards action" approach works for smaller things, larger efforts may require change management protocols that capture explicit approvals. In regulated industries, you may have no choice but to capture approvals in some official manner (with ink sometimes).
donalhunt··on All Kindles can now be jailbroken
In Europe, consumers should be getting longer protection than 1 year. May require a fight / small claims court submission to exercise one's rights.
donalhunt··on [dead]
He actually won $600k because he would have had to accept $50k/year over 20 years to get the $1 million prize money. If invested wisely $600k now (~$430k after tax) is probably the wiser move.
donalhunt··on I had to take down my course-swapping site or be expelled
Having been on the IT side of student registration, it's a major undertaking for the teams involved with thousands of students to be processed in a fairly short window. Downtime of any type during the registration period has a major impact so I'm not surprised that a university is being cautious with a 3rd party system connecting and potentially causing performance or downtime issues.
