dominicrose··on Court orders restart of all US offshore wind power construction
It depends what you mean by work. Technology - among a myriad of other things - enables the worst dictators to stay in power, even if the country as a whole doesn't work.
dominicrose··on Ratchets in software development (2021)
> a script which runs at source code linting time

There are moments when we don't bother with optional things like linting, formatting, warnings, etc.

So it's important that there is a moment when these things aren't optional.

dominicrose··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
Why is it so hard for someone like Trump to admit that a mistake was made by one of his agents, put him in jail and leave Minnesota alone at least for a while? It was predictable that things would get worse if he didn't back off and tell the truth.
dominicrose··on Over 36,500 killed in Iran's deadliest massacre, documents reveal
With the amount of sanctions against Iran right now we could say that Iran is being starved as well, but we can't blame Israel for everything. Almost everyone participates in the sanctions but citizens aren't the target.
dominicrose··on ICE using Palantir tool that feeds on Medicaid data
You don't need gun freedom to avoid mass government slaughter like in Iran. I live in France and I feel safe even though I can't defend my home with a gun. The door is pretty strong and if I go outside I know that the worst thing that can be against me is a knife or a dog, something I never saw used against someone with my own eyes, only in the newspapers.

What is required is a constant fight against obscurantism. It's a cultural battle.

dominicrose··on Iran's internet blackout may become permanent, with access for elites only
I don't want to believe that a government so incompetent, corrupt and cruel can continue to function. I don't trust that the rest of the world will help militarily although it's a strong possibility, but I do trust that they will continue to isolate the country. It's possible that the regime will implode simply because there is no honor among thieves.
dominicrose··on Over 36,500 killed in Iran's deadliest massacre, documents reveal
There was a lot of death in 2 days but the revolution started about a month ago so it's not just those two days. I think you could compare Gaza to a single Iranian city, but Iran is much larger than this. Another important distinction is that - no matter what your beliefs are - civilians aren't the target in Gaza, but they clearly are the target in Iran. If the civilians had weapons, it would be a different story.
dominicrose··on Talking to LLMs has improved my thinking
The way most people think is by talking to each other but writing is a stronger way to think and writing to an LLM or with the help of an LLM has some of the benefits of talking with someone. Also, writing and sketchingon a piece of paper have unique advantages.
dominicrose··on From stealth blackout to whitelisting: Inside the Iranian shutdown
I don't apply the term to everything I mentioned Arabs because they are the occupying force in Iran. They even brought Iraqis to repress the population. That is today but there's also a long history in Iran/Persian. Ireland also has a complex history but I don't know enough about that.
dominicrose··on From stealth blackout to whitelisting: Inside the Iranian shutdown
Apartheid isn't only about race. It can be about genre. It obviously exists in Iran. There's also a long history of Persians vs Arabs, an weaponised islam.
dominicrose··on From stealth blackout to whitelisting: Inside the Iranian shutdown
Immediately when the blackout started an Iranian living abroad told me there will be a massacre. No journalists needed to know that but journalists do bring credibility to a claim. The tiny part of the population that is whitelisted is spreading lies, which doesn't help.
dominicrose··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
The average US worker costs more if not much more than the average foreign worker.
dominicrose··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
Interesting. The Electoral College made the difference then.
dominicrose··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
I don't "like" taxes I just think that people are more generous when they are obliged to be. It won't make them generous on top of the taxes but at least they'll pay the damn taxes. I live in France where the taxes are much higher than in the US. It's annoying but there are clearly some advantages and we are adapted to a more humble lifestyle, which is fine.
dominicrose··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
Women have had the right to vote for a long time. Women could not bring themselves to vote for a woman for President.

People talk a lot about Trump but I think a lot of people just voted against the other option so it didn't have much to do with Trump to begin with.

dominicrose··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
I'm not American but tariffs might be a way to "make America great again" because it makes it harder to trade with other countries. This means that it makes it relatively easier than before, to trade within the USA. Another effect is that it serves as a tax. Easy for me to say but I think Americans aren't taxed enough.
dominicrose··on Iran report says 16,500 dead in 'genocide under digital darkness'
The people who kill iranians are the same who finance hamas. Think it's easy to eliminate hamas without hurting civilians? I've heard there was no carpet bombing.
dominicrose··on A decentralized peer-to-peer messaging application that operates over Bluetooth
The regime in Iran has so much to hide it's unlikely that they will enable unsupervised international communication ever again. Other countries don't seem ready to do anything about it.
dominicrose··on Raspberry Pi's New AI Hat Adds 8GB of RAM for Local LLMs
I understand wanting to run a local LLM for privacy, but on something more powerful. Yes it's costly but what use is an LLM on a cheap board?
dominicrose··on Git Rebase for the Terrified
When things get messy I use Sublime Merge with two tabs, one with the code that's open in VS Code and one with the same project but different branch/commit. It works well on Linux. I've managed to make it work with Windows + WSL but I don't recommend it.
dominicrose··on The chess bot on Delta Air Lines will destroy you (2024) [video]
The game is likely in javascript but because of this bug we know it's not using React because with React the programmer doesn't update the view, React does.
dominicrose··on The chess bot on Delta Air Lines will destroy you (2024) [video]
I'm guessing the app got better precisely because there was a time limit.
dominicrose··on Play Aardwolf MUD
It's from 10 years ago, a French MUD called Multimud. It's closed source because the code contains too much information about the game. It's surprisingly simple, a Perl socket-select single-thread process with no dependencies.
dominicrose··on Bose has released API docs and opened the API for its EoL SoundTouch speakers
I'm still using stereo speakers even though the local store seems to only sell single units. They have bluetooth but I don't see why they would need to be "smarter" than this.
dominicrose··on Play Aardwolf MUD
I got my hands on the source code of a MUD. It was incredibly flat. Most of the code was if/else and output text. The data was in flat text files as well (1 line = one unit of data, an integer, range or an element of a list, similar to a .env file). The game dumps all the data at every save. It surprised me because I tried to be clever while making my own MUD engine but the result was exactly that, an engine, not a MUD.
dominicrose··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
Netflix as a streaming provider was paid from the get go and only provides professionally made content. It's closer to the way we normally buy things or something like an internet subscription.

For youtube, different people are going to have different reactions to their business model.

dominicrose··on A4 Paper Stories
Also sqrt(2) isn't the golden number. Not far from it but still...
dominicrose··on A4 Paper Stories
21cm is close to 20 which means A5 has a side close to 10.

29.7 is close to 30. So why not use A4 sheets to install kitchen cabinets? A friend of mine advised me to buy a laser level. A tiny level was quite enough. A laser meter is nice though although I don't understand why it's inaccurate sometimes. Maybe it depends on the surface matter/paint.

dominicrose··on “Stop Designing Languages. Write Libraries Instead” (2016)
Rails wouldn't exist without Ruby, Ruby wouldn't exist without C, Rails can't be rewritten in C, Rails isn't a library.

But aren't Rails, Laravel and Django a bit similar? At least for the people not directly involved in coding.

dominicrose··on What *is* code? (2015)
Clojure is pretty similar to EDN which stands for extensible data notation.
