dodders··on The Tyranny of the Hollerith Punched Card (2012)
My day job used to involve coding in RPG which still enforced 80 column formatting as of the late 90s, where specific columns have specific meanings and are populated with indicators that represent types and instructions. This is a direct result of programs being written using punched cards, but was carried into the interactive environment as well.

Examples here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_RPG#Example_code

dodders··on Pints in the sun
I think the results need to include rain/cloud coverage for pubs in the UK.
dodders··on High Frequency Trading and Finance's Race to Irrelevance
Treating HFT as a proxy for 'Finance' is a flawed premise.

Without 'Finance', you would not have: - Cheap mortgage rates - mainly due to securitization. - Cheap loan rates - yes, car leasers, I'm looking at you.... - Rational commodity markets. Think Starbucks, every car/computer made today. - You get the idea.

Certainly, some aspects of modern markets appear to add little value, but the bulk of 'finance' benefits not only companies but everyday consumers immensely. -

But not too busy to read HN and post questions, it would seem...
dodders··on It's just wood
Seriously, you don't need a youtube video to explain how to replace a light switch. A screwdriver and a decent amount of curiosity will get you a long way.

Plus knowing where the fuse box is, of course...

dodders··on The slow death of purposeless walking
Where do you live in the US that is unsafe for walking?
dodders··on Rice Cooker Technology
+1. My rice cooker defaults to white rice, so that's one button press to turn it on and... that's it.
dodders··on Unearthing a 13th-century metaverse
> A scientist, philosopher, mathematician, theologian and at one point Bishop of Lincoln, he was one of the first thinkers in northern Europe to read both Aristotle and the various Islamic commentators on the Greek philosopher’s work, all of which were newly translated into Latin.

I'm always amazed by how productive the pre TV/internet/facebook scholars sound. Who would have time for all that reading and thinking today with a day job as a Bishop?

dodders··on “Artery chokes after 70 copies of Visual Studio”
From the workarounds tab: "Do not open more than 70 copies of Visual Studio..."
dodders··on Paying to get rid of pagination on Slate.com?
> It's miles ahead of my local newspaper and their stupid 5 articles a day paywall

That 'stupid' paywall is serving the same mechanism as Slate's new subcription mechanism - monetizing the site's content. Interesting how one is perceived as 'bad' (but probably offers more value for money) and the other is viewed as a 'favourite business model'. Why the difference?

dodders··on Foolproof: A Sampling of Mathematical Folk Humor (2005) [pdf]
A mathematician sees a frog by the side of the road. He stops and the frog says, "Kiss me and i will turn into a beautiful princess and fall in love with you." The mathematician puts the frog in his pocket. The frog asks "Why don't you kiss me?" Replies the mathematician, "I don't have any use for a princess. But a talking frog, that's cool..."
dodders··on How Mike Judge and Co. Are Turning "Silicon Valley" Into the Next "Spinal Tap"
The idea of lossless compression in a smaller file size than anything else on the market spoiled the entire show for me.

Call me picky, but...

dodders··on This is how much tech consultants make per hour now.
Wall St consultants (let alone HFT 'experts') should make somewhere close to double that. The same is true for London/Frankfurt/Singapore/Hong Kong financial industry consultants.
dodders··on The Decline of the Mobile Web
The Flurry stats [http://blog.flurry.com/bid/109749/Apps-Solidify-Leadership-S...] show 32% of user time is spent gaming; 17% on facebook; 9.5% on messaging and 4% on youtube - that's 62% for those of you keeping count.

That doesn't look like the end of the mobile web - that just looks like people spending a lot of time gaming and on facebook.

dodders··on EU votes net neutrality into law, abolishes mobile roaming charges
> All these politicians in Brussels are not directly elected.

I don't believe that's correct. Since 1979, every member state has elected MEPs.

dodders··on Comcast: stop using Netflix and order more TV channels
> So why is a company that sells internet telling me to use less internet?

Probably because you're using more internet than you're paying for?

dodders··on The WhatsApp Architecture Facebook Bought For $19 Billion
+1

Siblings in England, USA and Australia and we all use the group chat.

dodders··on Access the BBC stream of the Olympics
Using Tunlr's DNS servers also provides access from the rest of the world. They are still free for non-netflix/hulu sites.
dodders··on Will the spring launch of Apple TV signal the end of broadcast TV?
Not until live sports broadcasts are more widely available it won't.
