doctorwho··on To my daughter's high school programming teacher
If a kid being bullied/harassed doesn't speak up and it doesn't happen right in front of the teacher, how is the teacher supposed to know what's happening? Kids lose interest and get depressed all the time, it could be bullying, they could be having problems at home. Teachers are not therapists. They are not trained to recognize warning signs of anything. That's why schools have guidance counselors and principals for kids to talk to. Yes, there could be some preemptive measures taken at the beginning of the class but that often gives the little bastards doing the bullying more ideas. If the OP had been more involved (not just interested in bragging about, but really involved) in her child's life and recognized the warnings signs (that she easily picked up on months later) then she could have done her job as a parent an intervened. It's your job as a parent to watch out for your children. You should know them better than anyone. If you didn't see the signs, how could a teacher who barely knows your child pick up on them?
doctorwho··on Tech Book Face Off: The Pragmatic Programmer Vs. Code Complete
When the first edition of CC hit the shelves the big thing on the internet was usenet and that was basically the only place to talk/fight about the stuff CC was talking about. The web was too new, the content to sparse and dialup was still king so you didn't spend hours online reading HN and StackOverflow. The audiences for these books are separated by a decade. CC2 was an effort to bridge that span of time but the audience has changed so it missed the mark. People care about different things today. The business of writing crappy code quickly, getting investment and getting out with your life savings intact matter more than the craft of writing code that first drew me to computers. Different times.
doctorwho··on Do whatever makes you happy is a lie
Let me fix that title for you...

Do whatever makes you happy (without taking reality into account) is a lie (well, not a lie, just a wee bit stupid and naive).

Like people who go to university with NO IDEA what they want to do when they get out and then whine about not having a job and a huge student loan when they graduate.

Think. Decide. Do. And take responsibility instead of looking for someone to blame for why you are where you are in life.

doctorwho··on On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs
Politicians make unions and "bullshit jobs" possible by creating the incentives for companies to hire people they don't need. Unions then make it impossible to get rid of the deadwood. In the case of pure government jobs we're doubly damned.. they create bullshit jobs for paper pushers and then governmentt unions make sure those jobs exist for as close to forever as they possibly can. It's not conspiracy, it's stupidity.
doctorwho··on Having a list with ideas, how to identify the good ones?
Check out http://www.startupbook.net/

“This book is aimed at developers who want to launch their startup with no outside funding. It’s for companies started by real developers solving real pain points using desktop, web and mobile applications.”

You'll find various glowing reviews about this book so I won't add to them. The chapter about how to find and select an idea, measure traction etc before you start building anything may be of some interest.

doctorwho··on Unemployed Black Woman Pretends to be White, Job Offers Skyrocket (2012)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_imply_cau...

The counter assumption, that correlation proves causation, is considered a questionable cause logical fallacy in that two events occurring together are taken to have a cause-and-effect relationship.

This fallacy is also known as cum hoc ergo propter hoc, Latin for "with this, therefore because of this", and "false cause".

A similar fallacy, that an event that follows another was necessarily a consequence of the first event, is sometimes described as post hoc ergo propter hoc (Latin for "after this, therefore because of this").

doctorwho··on Ask HN: Seeking Freelance Mobile App Developer to Build Simple App
"Payment upon all 4 app variants' successful submission to all 4 platforms' app stores using our accounts."

So if your idea is rejected by the Apple App Store then there's no payment?

That payment clause alone will be a deal breaker for any decent developer.

If you take that restriction out you MIGHT get someone to help, even with the restrictive budget.

doctorwho··on Complaint filed against Irish subsidiaries of Apple, Facebook
It's going to come down to what kind of business the Irish company carries out on behalf of the parent company or whether the Irish company is the parent. There are so many ways the relationship could be set up and figuring it all out could take a loooong time. First they have to work that out before they can determine whether they are responsible for following EU law and what laws they are obliged to follow. The Irish company may not have anything to do with data which would pretty much let them off the hook I'm guessing.
doctorwho··on The Vaccine Hoax is Over. Documents from UK reveal 30 Years of Coverup
If you took this seriously you are probably wearing a tinfoil hat and you also believe that it works.
doctorwho··on Ask HN: What do startups do with millions of funding?
8/10 piss it away quickly on new hires, new offices and "marketing". The other 2 piss it away just a little slower than the other 8 to give the illusion that they might eventually become profitable or survive to raise another round of funding.
doctorwho··on Sodomy Hazing Leaves 13-Year-Old Victim Outcast in Colorado Town
Anyone who attacks the victim, dismissing it as no big deal, should be forced to experience the EXACT same thing themselves. I bet that would change their tiny little minds in a hurry.
doctorwho··on Why We'll Never Meet Aliens
Imagine a race of technologically advanced religious zealots. Now imagine that their god has tasked them with converting everyone in the universe and kill any who refuse. If you're having trouble, just imaging a Catholic Space Crusade or an Islamic Space Jihad, it's the next "logical" step. I'd be pretty afraid of aliens with that kind of mindset.
doctorwho··on Should I Just Buy This Domain?
Regardless of sarcastic intent, stop and think for a second about how you'll feel when someone DOES register one of those domains. If your site becomes popular and you don't own all of them, which domains would impact your business the most? If you're serious, buy those ones before they become valuable.
doctorwho··on Does Antimatter Fall Up or Down? Scientists Can't Say
If antimatter fell "up" wouldn't it be forced away from black holes and annihilating itself when contacting normal matter being sucked in?
doctorwho··on In 2011, China built as many coal plants as there are in Texas and Ohio combined
They're comparing apples and rocks here. China has over 1.3 BILLION people. The entire population of the United States is just a shade over 300 million. How about a plan to retroactively tax countries for their past (estimated) use of all fossil fuels? Tax the REAL offenders who got us here, as well as the people trying to catch up now.
doctorwho··on Evolution versus Intelligent Design: a mathematician's view
We should not be surprised to find strong relationships between the universe we observe and the formal system we invented to describe it. Mathematics is not static, we are constantly extending the formalism to explain new things we discover. We have invented plenty of bad formalisms (and beliefs) it's easy to focus on what we got right. This essay is an attempt to disguise mysticism as mathematics.
doctorwho··on The Lean Startup: A contrarian view
No methodology is going to be perfect in every situation. Take what can (if anything) from every new methodology you encounter and mold it into something that works for you and your team. The key concept I took from the lean movement was "continuous validation" for your ideas, like continuous integration for your code. Also known as fail faster, ship often, etc. If you're going to do something risky, measure the results and react as quickly as possible. The sooner you discover you're heading down a dead end, the sooner you can perform a course correction.
doctorwho··on The Lean Startup: A contrarian view
The top down approach requires you to have deep domain knowledge to build a successful product around your idea. The bottom up (lean) approach starts the same way but is based on measurable feedback. In both approaches, you still start with the idea. Domain knowledge MAY improve your odds of creating a good product but plenty of people have done/tried this and failed miserably. The lean approach improves your odds of success by actually trying to measure success whenever possible and use those measurements to validate or improve the process. The days of "if you build it, they will come" are numbered in the face of more data driven methodologies.
doctorwho··on Problems with the TSA
I'm a type 2 diabetic. The medecine I take affects my blood sugar. The "medecine" that protects me from my medecine is sugar and can be bought anywhere. It's medicinal to me regardless of what any moron TSA agent might think. If my flight is delayed and I can't eat or drink something sugary when I need it, my blood sugar drops and I go into a coma and risk brain damage. Should I depend on the flight attendant to rush me some sugar if I'm about to pass out or should I be allowed to carry it with me? I don't have to rely on sugary drinks in emergencies, I can use sugar pills but his needs are more constant and immediate. I may not agree with this adversarial approach but I sure as hell understand his position.
doctorwho··on Tesla Takes on Texas Dealer’s Association
If the dealer's way is "better" then why do they need laws to enforce it? Another example of an entrenched business fighting to maintain a legislated monopoly by buying off the legislators. Capitalism fail!
doctorwho··on Uniloc v. Rackspace: court bounces patent on method for rounding numbers
I know the guy whose patent kick started what later became Uniloc. It wasn't the patent in question here. It was a real innovation. I've worked with Uniloc and they were generally a nice bunch. I've defended them in the past when they were defending their software licensing patents. I didn't want to believe they had gone over to the dark side but it's pretty hard with the evidence staring me right in the face.
doctorwho··on Apple's Data Centers Now Running on 100% Renewable Energy
How much energy would they get from burning $1 bills that they've collected over the years from all the Pabst swilling hipsters?
doctorwho··on Ask HN: Questions to ask when hiring a windows developer?
Recognizing you aren't qualified to gauge someone's experience is a crucial first step, now take the next one. A "cheat sheet" of questions isn't going to help you either. Find an senior Windows developer you know/trust and have them talk to your potential candidates. They should be able to weed out the bozos quickly so you can focus your energy on candidates with real potential.
doctorwho··on I have $10k to invest in a startup, what should I do?
$10K is not serious and you're most likely going to lose it. That's not me being a jerk, that's me being realistic. Statistically about 8 out of 10 funded companies are going to fail. VC's make their money by playing the numbers. They need to get their money back from the other 2/10. You don't have that option if you're only playing with $10K. Angels are people who know this and can afford to lose the cash they put up, they do it because they love it not because they need more money. Do more research before you flush your money down the toilet.
doctorwho··on How Can I Find a Coffee Shop That'll Actually Let Me Sit and Work for Awhile?
Walk in. Buy something. Ask them.
doctorwho··on 1366x768, the most popular resolution, is being ignored
1366x768 and every other pixel specific resolution can die in a fire and should be ignored by everyone. Design for aspect ratios and pixel densities and stop creating problems.
doctorwho··on A Colossal Screw Up
"The reality is that even if I went and got a job and started making payments, I'd have to remain employed for decades to even make a dent."

Uhhhh, yeah... that's how loans work. Borrow a lot, pay for a looong time.

Compound interest is usually covered in grade 10 (or earlier) and is about as complicated as walking. Did you fail basic math or just fail to figure out how to apply math to real life?

Of course you're interested in building up a business instead of working to pay off the 4 year "vacation" you took after high school.

Your school isn't to blame. The government isn't to blame. Your parents might be partially to blame, but mostly I'm guessing you just followed the herd right into post-secondary financial hell without engaging your brain and wouldn't have listened to anyone who tried to tell you any different.

doctorwho··on A Colossal Screw Up
The stench of entitlement is so thick you can cut it. Be glad you graduated at a time when interest rates are low. Some of us graduated when rates were over 15%. Do you know what we did? We got jobs and paid them off. Do you know what we didn't do? Whine about the decisions we made after the fact. Don't expect the people who made the loan to forgive it. Don't expect anyone else to throw you a pity party. Man up and pay off your debt or defer payment and "follow your dreams" but stop whining.
doctorwho··on The Difference In Profitability Between Apple And Amazon
Regardless of raw profit, Amazon will remain a viable business for as long as there are products that people want. ANY products. Apple will remain a viable business only as long as they create NEW products that people want.
doctorwho··on Entrepreneurs Beware: In the US, legal equality is myth
Sometimes you don't have a choice but to get into a fight. In that case you would be right. Aaron had a choice. Raise awareness by educating the public about flaws in the law and work to change them OR raise awareness by provoking a fight. He chose the role of the heroic underdog. Aaron was a smart guy who made a bad choice. He wasn't strong enough to deal with the results of his actions.
