Is it me or are all the dates in this timeline in the future? Isn’t it Feb 2025 now? Do you smell toast?

EDIT: oh I see .. DD/MM/YY is a new one to me

doctorhandshake··on Don't "optimize" conditional moves in shaders with mix()+step()
I don’t know enough about these implementations to know if this can be interpreted as a blanket ‘conditionals are fine’ or, rather, ‘ternary operations which select between two themselves non-branching expressions are fine’.

Like does this apply if one of the two branches of a conditional is computationally much more expensive? My (very shallow) understanding was that having, eg, a return statement on one branch and a bunch of work on the other would hamstring the GPU’s ability to optimize execution.

doctorhandshake··on The Man in the Midnight-Blue Six-Ply Italian-Milled Wool Suit
I second this. Guy is to me today’s foremost communicator and decipherer of the code of men’s fashion.
doctorhandshake··on Show HN: Check Supply – Send Checks in the Mail
I use Qapital for this - they have some pretty granular rules you can use related to saving a percentage of income to certain accounts, repeated withdrawals, etc.
doctorhandshake··on Most people don't care about quality
I feel like this is effectively the opposite of the long tail argument https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_tail
doctorhandshake··on WebGL Fluid Simulation
Wild! Just saw that at the top of the front page and thought ‘dang is HN reading my mind today??’

Thanks for the link!

doctorhandshake··on WebGL Fluid Simulation
This was the first thing I did when I wrote a fluid sim as well - I’ve spent a ton of time and energy pursuing ways to get subtractive color effects (the richness and light-subjectivity of pigment) in digital artifacts and have mostly come up empty, but I take every chance I can get.
doctorhandshake··on The rise of digital housekeeping: the hidden work of smart technology
Both! My lights go dim and deep red after sunset but very bright and cold mid-day.
doctorhandshake··on The rise of digital housekeeping: the hidden work of smart technology
For me the one irreplaceable ‘smart home’ feature is circadian lighting. There are ‘smart’ fixtures that will do this themselves but I’ve found scheduling on a per-room basis to be workable (albeit at times a maintenance headache) for coming on 12 years now.

Absolutely can’t live happily with dumb lights only. It’s not just aesthetics - I believe it has a major impact on my sleep health.

doctorhandshake··on Show HN: Markwhen: Markdown for Timelines
Oh I missed the rendering capability. Thanks for the link!
doctorhandshake··on Show HN: Markwhen: Markdown for Timelines
Sorry if this is a dumb Q but what took that from Markwhen/down to HTML?
doctorhandshake··on Nodezator is a generalist Python node editor
To be fair, this looks extremely similar to the comfy node editor. Would be a little more like asking if the Ford Fusion and the Lincoln MKZ are related because they look a hell of a lot alike from the outside.
doctorhandshake··on The Art and Mathematics of Genji-Ko
Loved this. Great writing and a bit of cultural arcana I knew nothing about but which resonates into the present day.

doctorhandshake··on Show HN: Wall-mounted diffusion mirror that turns reflections into paintings
That’s the technique I used on a piece that does inpainting across an image at a rate of about 1 image every 8 seconds - I ‘melt’ the results in for the duration until the next patch is ready: https://hardwork.party/aws-epoch-optimizer/
doctorhandshake··on The best darn grid shader yet (2023)
Depending on what you’re after, the common recommendation to start with book of shaders or shadertoy may be counterproductive. In my experience using shaders, fragment shaders are a place where I spend a lot of time and effort, and I do a decent amount of computation directly on textures, but the sort of stuff done in fullscreen quad ‘picture in a box’ shaders as in Book of Shaders and ShaderToy is, I believe, unproductively mind-shattering and abstract for beginners. To learn shader fundamentals I’d suggest you write a particle system (in compute or in vertex+frag) or even a raymarching renderer or something, rather than just bang your head against animating patterns on a single frag.

To their second point, blaming the Philippines for dumping our ‘recycling’ in the ocean is a little bit like blaming African countries for burning our e-waste. We can’t pretend you can generate pounds of single-use plastic waste per person and have the problem disappear when you put it in a blue bin. Recycling is a lie invented by the packaging industry, and the reality is that we export the problem in bulk to the developing world, who inconveniently happen to share a planet, physics, and economy with us. We’re the ones buying the plastic to begin with, and it’s only right it washes onshore back here so we can’t pretend it doesn’t exist when it hits the bin.

>> a plastic pellet is just going to pass straight through my digestive system

Through the mechanical grinding action of weather and tides (the same mechanisms that make sand out of rock and coral), these chunks can become much much smaller, small enough to cross the intestine into the bloodstream and small enough to cross the blood brain barrier or pass up your nose, lodging in your brain.

doctorhandshake··on Video Surveillance with YOLO+llava
>> It calculates the center of every detection box, pinpoint on screen and gives 16px tolerance on all directions. Script tries to find closest object as fallback and creates a new object in memory in last resort. You can observe persistent objects in /elements folder

I’ve never implemented this kind of object persistence algo - is this a good approach? Seems naive but maybe that’s just because it’s simple.

doctorhandshake··on Show HN: A Website for Comparing Protein Powder Prices
I second this – it’s a much bigger project but this is the criteria that I care about most.

doctorhandshake··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
I’m building a roomscale immersive gaming platform.

Walls and floor projection, markerless motion capture, full-body arcade-style gameplay.

Cinematic, hilarious, innovative, beautiful, addictive games.

doctorhandshake··on Orion, our first true augmented reality glasses
The EMG wrist band is the most exciting part of this release, IMO. That strikes me as a great solve that pushes into software a lot of hard problems that were solved with hardware previously.
doctorhandshake··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
I like the simplicity of this. There was a related game called Specimen that’s worth checking out. http://playspecimen.com/
doctorhandshake··on Hyundai Motor Group hits double-digit EV market share in the US
There’s lots to like about Hyundai-group EVs but I wish to god they didn’t have so many design embellishments meant to loudly announce ‘EV’. They look like toys with all the decals, textures, flares, and unnecessary bits.
doctorhandshake··on How to avoid losing items? Holding pens
I like to say - my wife is like Marie Kondo except when she’s done with something, she thanks it and puts it in a bowl by the front door.
doctorhandshake··on Deep Live Cam: Real-time face swapping and one-click video deepfake tool
Haha yes. Maybe a secret knock?
doctorhandshake··on Deep Live Cam: Real-time face swapping and one-click video deepfake tool
This makes me think there could be use for a very very (very) easy-to-use tool that allows two parties to choose and store a secret (verbally pronounceable) passphrase known only to the two of them, for use in situations in which it might be necessary to ‘sign’ a video chat or audio conversation in which one party’s identity might be in doubt.
