dochtman··on But You Told Me You Were Safe: Attacking the Mozilla Firefox Renderer (Part 1)
Tl;dr: This headline seems very clickbaity, suggesting that the vulnerable code was written in Rust, which is not actually the case.
dochtman··on How efficient can cat(1) be?
I'm wondering if it would make sense to use io_uring for this kind of thing. If not, why not?
dochtman··on Google Kubernetes Engine adds support for Arm nodes
The Asahi Linux installer worked flawlessly on my MacBook Pro M1 Max, though it asks you to do some low level things like repartitioning the drive.
dochtman··on What is `Box<str>` and how is it different from `String` in Rust?
The tl;dr doesn't quite make sense to me. To me the core difference is that a Box<str> takes one less word on the stack, because by virtue of the str being immutable it doesn't need to track the capacity of the allocation as distinct from the length. This is analogous to Box<[u8]> vs Vec<u8> (and in fact those are the same data types except for the guarantee of valid UTF-8).
dochtman··on Ask HN: How to raise a seed round in a down market?
Get into YC?
dochtman··on Apple’s macOS Ventura – New Security Changes
Very curious about userspace filesystems, would be awesome if there's finally a fast solution for this that's well-supported in the OS.
dochtman··on Maud: A Rust macro for writing HTML
I created Askama (which yarte forked), the inheritance docs aren't great but also not too bad. Curious why you didn't try it?
dochtman··on Find a good available .com domain
Nope! In fact, we've started work on our own ICANN-accredited registrar under the Instant Domains brand.
dochtman··on Find a good available .com domain
It's running on GCP, the backend is written in Rust (with a smattering of legacy Go) and the frontend is written in React + Next. Any other questions?
dochtman··on Find a good available .com domain
I think that's what happens if you hit enter from within the search bar. We search as you type, so no need to hit enter in order to search. Not our finest bit of UI, will bring that back to the team to see if we can improve on it.
dochtman··on Find a good available .com domain
Alternatively, use instantdomainsearch.com (disclosure, I'm the CTO), which packages most of these things up in a fast web interface and also enables searching in a bunch of other TLDs.
dochtman··on Maud: A Rust macro for writing HTML
> Sadly, there isn't any great alternative for making performant HTML templates in Rust from what I've seen, a lot of the other HTML templating libs aren't that great comparatively.

Which others have you tried, and why do you think they're not great?

dochtman··on Rust Is Hard, Or: The Misery of Mainstream Programming
Which QUIC library did you use? Quinn (the one I work on) comes with an async/await interface.
dochtman··on Wolvic (Igalia’s Stewardship of Firefox Reality)
So is this based on Servo or old-school Gecko?

From skimming the repo, looks like the latter. Too bad, I was hoping Igalia had figured out a way to finance Servo development.

dochtman··on Distributed Systems Shibboleths
Another shibboleth that I was expecting: backpressure.
dochtman··on Ask HN: How come HN folks are so well-versed in social sciences and humanities?
Aka the Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect:

dochtman··on How we built a new, fast file transfer protocol
Does UDT come with encryption? If so, how does it compare to QUIC?
dochtman··on Twitter makes it harder to choose the old reverse-chronological feed
Generally Ikea stores have a few shortcuts, but you usually have to pay attention to find them.
dochtman··on Re: Moxie on Web3
I’d argue all of those setups combined would amount to less than 1% of internet users, so I’d hardly call them mainstream.
dochtman··on Apple Helps Asahi Linux
I agree about the "consumers" angle, but I don't think it's entirely crazy to think that unlocking Linux on Apple Silicon will eventually have a non-negligible impact on Apple's bottom line. Think Linux on PS3.
dochtman··on Apple Helps Asahi Linux
It's different with Apple Silicon because their hardware is more differentiated; meaning it might be more interesting for them to see non-macOS usage for it.
dochtman··on Chiselstore: an embeddable, distributed SQLite for Rust
The announcement here talks more about the context:

https://glaubercosta-11125.medium.com/728187331f53

It also mentions rqlite and dqlite.

dochtman··on HTTP/3 Is Fast
QUIC does require TLS 1.3, but as far as I can tell HTTP/2 over TLS 1.3 is perfectly viable, and is likely a common deployment scenario.

Upgrading just TLS to 1.3 for most people likely just means upgrading to a newer openssl which you probably want to do anyway. In many web server deployment scenarios, deploying HTTP/3 is highly likely to be more involved. The Apache httpd doesn't support H3 at all, I don't know if nginx has it enabled by default these days?

dochtman··on How Germany became Europe's cargo bike hub
Those numbers don’t seem to adjust for population size, wonder what the numbers are per capita. Here in NL cargo bikes are extremely common for transporting kids.
dochtman··on This shouldn't have happened: A vulnerability postmortem
This is not true. Lots of people are putting Rust on microcontrollers now - just have to stick to no_std.
dochtman··on Instrument a Rust Application with OpenTelemetry
There's a tracing-opentelemetry crate that lives in the tracing repo that lets you connecting tracing to opentelemetry.
dochtman··on An Epic future for SPJ
Anyone know more information about Verse itself?
dochtman··on What memory model should Rust use?
And after some period of that it could be made unsafe in a future edition. So it’s not a totally crazy idea, but the payoff would have to be quite something.
dochtman··on High-fidelity remote communication
Wondering how the 2021 MacBook Pro camera stacks up to the 2019 one. I did my first Zoom call with my 16” M1 Max yesterday and the quality seemed to be quite a lot better (although I coincidentally improved the lighting near my desk a bit, as well).
dochtman··on Message from cycling heaven: it’s not that fantastic here
Yup. Given, too, that it was presented at the Dutch Cycling Embassy, I (as a Dutchman) read this as the author trying to raise the bar/challenging the Dutch discussion on transit (or Movement, as her book is called) not to get complacent.
