dochtman··on Google is making AI in Gmail and Docs free, but raising the price of Workspace
Makes sense that this is the only way to compete with Microsoft.

(See also how MS attacked Slack by including Teams for “free”.)

dochtman··on Mergiraf: a syntax-aware merge driver for Git
git absorb is great, use it all the time.
dochtman··on Rustls Outperforms OpenSSL and BoringSSL
How so? What standards do you need support for?
dochtman··on The muscular imagination of Iain M. Banks: a future you might want
Although at the very end that AI gave up control in favor of some kind of shared consciousness approach.
dochtman··on Summary of the USA federal government's zero-trust memo
Passkeys might provide a decent middle ground here, assuming current UX issues can be improved upon.
dochtman··on Russ Cox is stepping down as the Go tech lead
The post actually contains some references to what he’s working on next, some kind of LLM agent to facilitate software development processes?
dochtman··on Intent to end OCSP service
Making something like CRLite more like a standard seems worthwhile. I looked at the Mozilla bits but AFAICT there’s not much if any documentation of the low-level bits and pieces.
dochtman··on File systems can change in Sequoia with FSKit
macFUSE discussion: https://github.com/osxfuse/osxfuse/issues/1025
dochtman··on What We're Working on in Firefox
I remember when it was still called Phoenix — the lean pure-browser reborn “from the ashes” of the Mozilla Suite (SeaMonkey). Amazing run…
dochtman··on The window for great-grandmothers is closing
Here in NL it is quite common for grandparents to help parents out with day care on their workdays. School pickup is rife with grandparents…
dochtman··on Addressing Visibility Challenges with TLS 1.3 Within the Enterprise
I’m confused — with TLS 1.3 Server Name Indication is still usually sent in the clear, unless you’re also using Encrypted ClientHello, right?
dochtman··on Show HN: A fast HNSW implementation in Rust
This is in pretty early stages. Might consider instant-distance which I wrote a few years ago and which is in production use at instantdomainsearch.com:

https://github.com/instant-labs/instant-distance

There are Python bindings, too:

https://pypi.org/project/instant-distance/

dochtman··on Bugs I've filed on browsers
Software doesn’t have to be open source in order to provide good “customer support” with tracking and responding to issues.

However, most non-source available projects don’t make it possible to publicly track issues at a code level.

dochtman··on Updated user interface for signing in to or signing up for your Google Account
No dark mode on GMail is… the worst.
dochtman··on Timeline to remove DSA support in OpenSSH
Does Azure support ed25519 keys yet?
dochtman··on Iggy.rs – building message streaming in Rust
Is TCP + TLS still faster than QUIC, or do you mean TCP without encryption? (I'm assuming you're using Quinn with rustls, so encryption is always enabled.)

I'm also curious about your macOS vs Linux numbers. As a Quinn maintainer, we're always happy to hear feedback including about our performance!

dochtman··on New Loongson chip matches Intel's 14600K in IPC tests, overclocked to 3 GHz
A bunch of effort has been invested in the Loongson target for Rust recently:

https://doc.rust-lang.org/nightly/rustc/platform-support/loo...

dochtman··on Opal Tadpole – A webcam for laptops
I got a C1 too and apart from the crap software it also seemed like the camera isn’t actually (significantly) better than the MacBook Pro (M1) camera anyway.
dochtman··on Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (2003)
I think Doctorow later was more explicit about the downsides of a Whuffie-like reputation systems, IIRC even in one of his fictional works?
dochtman··on Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (2003)
I don’t think the newer ones (like Walkaway) are Free like the early ones?
dochtman··on Ask HN: Why does Firefox have such a low market share anyways?
The lack of support for TouchID for WebAuthn has been bugging me to no end. Making WebAuthn more accessible is such a big deal to help stop phishing. It also looks like there’s no priority for moving forward with passkeys.

I’m still using Firefox on both desktop and mobile but this is the issue that has me doubting my choice going forward.

dochtman··on Hierarchical Navigable Small Worlds
https://github.com/instant-labs/instant-distance is a compact, fairly readable, pretty fast implementation of the paper in Rust (that I built).

We use it for searching aftermarket domains on Instant Domain Search.

dochtman··on The Rust I wanted had no future
Of course Guido ended up not completing the "For Life" part -- neither his life nor the life of the language. (I think PEP 8016 is the one that started the steering council to take the place of the BDFL? https://peps.python.org/pep-8016/)
dochtman··on Ask HN: What are some good resources for learning about low level disk/file IO?
Somewhat specific to Linux, but this one comes to mind:

https://itnext.io/modern-storage-is-plenty-fast-it-is-the-ap...

dochtman··on Nginx 1.25.0: experimental HTTP/3 support
Latency at higher percentiles (crappier internet connections) improves pretty meaningfully in most of the articles I've seen. Here's a recent one from Dropbox:

https://dropbox.tech/frontend/investigating-the-impact-of-ht...

(Discussed at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36027702.)

dochtman··on FUTO – An independent software lab and grant fund
Given the progress of Asahi, Apple (desktop) hardware seems to be doing quite well on the openness front.
dochtman··on Bringing Memory Safety to sudo and su
It’s a separate project. We’ll see if/when these new Rust-based versions become good enough for people to adopt as their daily driver sudo/su.
dochtman··on Displaying My Washing Machine's Remaining Time with Curl, Jq, and Pizauth
I wonder if the Thread/Matter standards will be able to improve on this once adopted. At least they provide open standards and don't require cloud components for supported devices to communicate with your (pocket and otherwise) computers.
dochtman··on Moving from Rust to C++
They were trying to get out in front of the NYT breaking the news of GMail, see The Social Radars podcast episode with Paul Buchheit (https://www.thesocialradars.com/episodes, great episode).
dochtman··on Reliability via Automated Renewal Information
Wouldn’t it be more efficient to get a list of renewable certificates/domains per account, instead of having to fetch renewal info separately for each certificate?
