dmux··on Reddit raises $200M at a $1.8B valuation
Emphasis.
dmux··on How far can you go with MySQL or MariaDB?
This is a great resource RE indexing: http://use-the-index-luke.com/
dmux··on FDA announces comprehensive plan for tobacco and nicotine regulation
>...preventing those consumers from making informed decisions about which products and services to consume.

Doesn't this provide an opportunity for another business such as Consumer Reports?

dmux··on The Weird Signal
It's probably someone microwaving lunch.
dmux··on We can weaponize fiction, but how do we monetize truth?
The Central Information Agency.
dmux··on Law enforcement took more stuff from people than burglars did last year (2015)
CT has banned civil forfeiture without a criminal conviction. A step in the right direction.
dmux··on Developing for the mobile web is a constant headache
I believe this is what Rebol IOS was trying to implement: http://www.rebol.com/ios/ios-intro.html
dmux··on Developing for the mobile web is a constant headache
> Shouldn't 99% of development be about creating semantic models and let generic clients take care of rendering it properly based on form-factor, context, preferences, etc?

If you're not familiar with the Naked Object's pattern, you may find it interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_objects

dmux··on Show HN: A notebook-style Common Lisp environment
I'd argue that it's anything but practical. Great documentation, but discoverability is severely lacking.

dmux··on Ask HN: What do you use to manage your professional relationships?
What specifically about LinkedIn makes it a disaster in your eyes? I've recently started using it again and found it to be immensely helpful.
dmux··on Scrimba: a video format for communicating code
Is there sound accompanying the video? I watched several but didn't hear anything.
dmux··on Blockchain Demo [video]
One of his last comments -- the one about having an immutable, agreed upon history -- seems like a great tool for recording facts in our "alternate-facts" world.
dmux··on Ask HN: What frameworks are currently used in a modern web stack?
Including DB migrations. I don't know if I could ever go back to working with SQL directly after using GORM.
dmux··on Racket v6.8
The documentation is my biggest frustration with Racket. Trying to grok how to use something as simple as their HTTP module proved difficult. It's great documentation, but seems to be aimed at a more academic level than pragmatic.
dmux··on Ask HN: Ultrabook for programming?
I used to like Lenovo, but after all the Spyware controversies, I don't feel right supporting them. Can you recommend an equivalent to the T series?
dmux··on Ask HN: What Java and UI stack should I use?
Sadly tooling support for 3.x isn't as strong as it was/is for the 2.x versions. Trying to get Eclipse or Netbeans to work with Grails 3.x is extremely error prone and buggy.
dmux··on Americans Are Putting Billions More Than Usual in Their 401(k)s
Plenty of high paying Boston companies.
dmux··on Ask HN: What “old” programming languages will you still be using in 2017?
Are you using a particular version? Pharo? Squeak? Commercial?
dmux··on Ask HN: What “old” programming languages will you still be using in 2017?
Check out http://nim-lang.org. It steals some of Pascal's good ideas.
dmux··on Ask HN: What “old” programming languages will you still be using in 2017?
Any specific implementation?
dmux··on Classes Considered Harmful [pdf]
>There seems to be a common fixation on objects "modeling the real world" with the counter argument for classes being that they don't model the real world.

I'm not sure why this is the case. Just the other day someone posted a link to a video about Abstract Algebra. In the video they defined "groups" that (to me) are synonymous with Classes in OOP.

dmux··on Zipf’s Law Arises Naturally When There Are Underlying, Unobserved Variables
VSauce has a Youtube video that discusses Zipf's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCn8zs912OE
dmux··on Who’s on Your 2016 Web Development Thank You List?
Andreas Rumpf for http://nim-lang.org and Dominik Picheta for his recent Nim book.
dmux··on Writing web applications using only the Go Standard Library
There was a discussion about Racket and its documentation yesterday. This is exactly the style of tutorial that they need.
dmux··on Racket Language – New website design
I've had the same issues navigating their documentation. About 10 months ago I attempted to write a reddit scraper using Racket. I started out reading their "net/http-client" library and had to turn to the /r/racket subreddit to find out that the "net/url" library was what I wanted. I'd love to see some simple directory that relates development intention with a library: "Web Scraping, JSON parsing => net/url".
dmux··on Ask HN: Which programming language is the right one for your startup?
I've been using Groovy for about a year now. Can you explain what you mean about the static system being "badly retrofitted?"
dmux··on Blue Ocean
For more about this, see the documentation relating to the "implicit parameter"[0]

dmux··on Why Functional Programming Matters (1984) [pdf]
Is the 'A' in ADT algebraic or abstract?
dmux··on Closure Compiler in JavaScript
>...so you only need to follow the semantics of the language, not the actual implementation.

Wouldn't you need to follow the syntax and not the semantics? Aren't the semantics what the syntax is abstracting? (I'm genuinely curious, not trying to flame.)
