dmarinus··on Dutch cities want to ban property investors in all neighborhoods
There is also a law in the works called "Prince Bernhards tax", our Prince owns a lot of expensive property in Amsterdam.
dmarinus··on Gitfs: Version Controlled File System
I wonder how conflicts are resolved, especially binary files.
dmarinus··on Ask HN: What is the worst bullshit thing you were asked to do at $JOB?
Being called by the CEO to check the flight schedule (not work related) at the airport because he was sure I had access to an internet browser. I quickly changed my phone number after that.
dmarinus··on Behind the scenes, AWS Lambda
When I was at re:invent 2019 I joined some chalk talks which weren't recorded (or not published). Some of the hosts told lot of details of their internal infrastructure.
dmarinus··on Ask HN: Pros and Cons of Switching from Linux to M1 MacBook
No, a MacBook Pro 15,1.
dmarinus··on Ask HN: Pros and Cons of Switching from Linux to M1 MacBook
If someone knows a way to keep using a Linux desktop environment on a MacBook I'm all ears! I've tried several ways, using Parallels, VirtualBox, QEmu, Docker Machine; using rdp, vnc, x2go/nx but all aren't snappy enough for my liking.
dmarinus··on Cloud Development Kit (CDK) by AWS will completely change software
I wonder why CDK uses an old version of the AWS SDK for JavaScript. I really like that CDK has some sane defaults (compared to CloudFormation where you have to define almost everything everytime). I also like it shows you a detailed progress status of the deployment.
dmarinus··on Examples of games developed by a single developer?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another_World_(video_game)

the ports are done by different people as well as the sound track.

Why do you want to do this all by yourself? I'd recommend to use whatever is useful, affordable and makes it more fun!

dmarinus··on Moving my serverless project to Ruby on Rails
CloudFormation is slow (custom resources take hours to time out), it's unpredictable (behavior is different for different services). I wish it didn't use stacks (drift happens and can only be fixed manually) and was just idempotent like ansible. It also doesn't come with sane defaults so you have to supply a load of boilerplate code (cdk fixes this using constructs).
dmarinus··on Facebook Container for Firefox
I use the SessionBox extension and let chrome remove all cookies at shutdown.
dmarinus··on Reinventing virtualization with the AWS Nitro System
This all sound like marketing talk to me, at reinvent they talked about replacing xen (ring0) with nitro but I don't see how you could replace that with hardware.
dmarinus··on Bug in OpenSSH / Config Checker
although this isn't nice I bet there are multiple ways to fool the config checker and not be able to login anymore.
dmarinus··on How NAT Traversal Works
This is a really nice explanation! I was also considering the birthday paradox to guess through a hard nas. It seems that the cgnat I'd like to traverse uses certain port ranges which could ease the guessing (I've read about nat traversal helpers to predict the ip address and ports). It would also be nice to do some research on NAT ALGs, it would be cool to fake a FTP connection to open an incoming port on the NAT gateway!
dmarinus··on CNO neutrinos from the Sun are finally detected
Ahh too bad we don't have to go to Thalassa then (Songs of distant earth, Arthur C Clarke)
dmarinus··on Ask HN: What’s your daily/weekly routine?
every day: 6.30 wake up, breakfast, read news 7.10 (for workdays) go to office 10.00 eat an apple 11.30 lunch (while working) 12.00 (for workdays) cycle for one hour 15.00 eat an orange 17.00 (for workdays) go home 17.30 dinner 20.00 TV/Nintendo Switch 20.30 Listen to radio while doing random stuff (not work) in my private office 21.30 read a book 22.00 sleep
dmarinus··on Why the Dutch Wait Less at Traffic Lights
Lol this seems to contain footage from Amsterdam. My experience is that a lot of people ignore red lights specifically in Amsterdam.
dmarinus··on Docker Releases Plugin for Simplified Deployments into AWS
I have the feeling that docker compose only supports a small subset of ECS. ECS has stuff like Load Balancers, schedulers and a parameter store in very specific ways. I don't think you'd want to use docker compose for that on AWS.
dmarinus··on Floccus: Sync Browser Bookmarks to Self-Hosted Servers
I don't login to chrome and this would be useful to synchronize my bookmarks. But it doesn't seem to support Android...
dmarinus··on Why is infrastructure as code such a big deal?
Well, IaC is way better than nothing but it isn't a substitude for documentation. I had to learn an AWS CloudFormation codebase and although it's pretty clean it's still loaded with quirks (for how stuff worked years ago and to workaround shortcomings of our application).

Most IaC describes how something is configured, you should also describe why something is configured. Most IaO platforms allow you to write comments, make use of it!

dmarinus··on Active Record
I don't know why you've submitted this but I've worked with a project using this active record pattern and had serious problems because it didn't use an entity manager. Due to complexity the same record could get instantiated multiple times and have different contents.
dmarinus··on Ansible Alternatives in Python
What I like most from Ansible is that a playbook is idempotent and (mostly) declarational. Biggest downside is that it's hard to debug (no realtime output) and a bit slow (but acceptable)
dmarinus··on Emulate legacy printer drivers for CUPS with QEMU
I love these hacks! Did you know you can find the source code of this "driver" (foo2hbpl1) on the internet archive? http://web.archive.org/web/20151008025637/http://www.cyberco...
dmarinus··on I've been working on X11 on jailbroken iOS
Wouldn't porting Wayland be easier and more future proof than porting X11?
