dmarinus··on Organizing multiple Git identities
Nice git feature, I just configure my identities in .git/config (per repository).
dmarinus··on DKIM: Rotate and publish your keys
Is there any service which automatically indexes and archives DKIM keys?

It could be very valuable to check the authenticity of old e-mails.

dmarinus··on Modern Linux Tools vs. Unix Classics: Which Would I Choose?
I'm often in the same position, for me it's often quicker to hack something together with what I know than using a new technology.

It's just a matter of experience with the toolchain.

You only have to be cautious when your input is mangled in some way (with escape characters etc) and your toolchain cannot cope with such things.

There are many different versions of cut, awk, sed and even jq. I don't consider this very portable.

dmarinus··on Nginx Unit – Universal web app server
this is a nice alternative for the apache php module (mod_php) if you don't want to or can't use php-fpm.
dmarinus··on Turning a keyboard into a mouse with Libevdev
Nice! libevdev is really good, any reason why this is implemented using a thread? I would have love to see how this was implemented asynchronous in C.
dmarinus··on Accessible Palette: stop using HSL for color systems (2021)
I use HSL to set the color of my keyboard leds during the day. For that purpose it's really great because it gives nice bright colors contrary to cielab which give many dull colors (like visible in the blog post).
dmarinus··on Messenger Lite to be retired by September 18th
I also use WhatsApp (this is kind of required in the Netherlands). It was mentioned before that messenger and whatsapp would be connected to each other. I'm not planning to switch but the permanent message is certainly annoying.
dmarinus··on What HashiCorp’s license change means for our customers
there's also cdk-tf (for terraform)
dmarinus··on Lacros on Chromebooks transition plan won’t be quick
This reminds me of when Internet Explorer and Explorer in Win9x got integrated and "couldn't get separated". Then Google did the same thing with ChromeOS and now they are reverting on this decision..
dmarinus··on Bram Moolenaar has died
So sad, I had the honor to meet Bram at a FOSS talk with RMS which he organized in Amsterdam RAI. I'll never forget that day. I've been using VIM for a many decades and I'm sure to keep using it for a long time. Many thanks for all the work and condolences for his family.
dmarinus··on Cophone – Mobile work phones running in the cloud
mobile phone ui often use touch gestures, is this properly handled through the browser?
dmarinus··on Rethinking Infrastructure as Code from Scratch
Interesting comparison with the webbrowser stack! In that sense CDK (generate cloudformation) is more like PHP (generate HTML). I wonder when "Virtual DOM"s, AJAX and CSS preprocessors get introduced to IaC.
dmarinus··on Lima: A nice way to run Linux VMs on Mac
I've been searching for a live iso for Windows to use with lima (wima, Windows VM on Mac).
dmarinus··on The Lava Layer Anti-Pattern (2014)
In other words: any incomplete refactoring is technical debt.

In case of considering a refactor always make sure you can finish it completely.

dmarinus··on Podman Desktop 1.0
you can actually use docker-compose with podman
dmarinus··on The weird world of Windows file paths
GitHub Actions in 2023 has issues with checking out a repository with 256ish path names on Windows runners. whups
dmarinus··on Amazon Linux 2022 is having an identity crisis in 2023
It might not have been the brightest idea from Amazon to brand it to a year as it's still not released in 2023.

The current version is Amazon Linux 2 and in some places this is called (release candidate)3.3.

Though I hope it will be released soon and I wonder if they will call it "Amazon Linux 3" or "Amazon Linux 2023".

dmarinus··on Pangram
Another populair one is: "Lynx c.q. vos prikt bh: dag zwemjuf!"
dmarinus··on Libostree
Yes! Fedora Silverblue (ostree based Linux distribution) ISO already contains images for PXE booting.

But mind you; I'm quite sure it still uses overlayfs or device mapper snapshots for the root filesystem.

dmarinus··on How to take back our streets and transform our lives
We take it for granted that the streets outside out homes are designed for movement from A to B, nothing more. But what happens if we radically rethink how we use these public spaces? Could we change our lives for the better?
dmarinus··on What color is it?
I do something similar with my keyboard rgb leds.
dmarinus··on Guthib
I laughed so hard when someone had this in his resume...
dmarinus··on Ctrl-C
Author is talking about looking up PIDs, kill -9 %1 saves you from that.
dmarinus··on Ctrl-C
After decades of experience I learned to use ctrl-\ (break) or ctrl-z and then kill -9 %1. Hope this helps someone.
dmarinus··on Reasons to tour by bicycle
I'm daily cycling through Amsterdam (City center) at rush hours (8 am, 5 pm), it's busy but no congestion (longer than 10 seconds). But you definitely need some cycling skills and know your way around.
dmarinus··on Difftastic: A diff that understands syntax
Looks nice! Now I only need patchtasic :-)
dmarinus··on Ask HN: Why aren't there any real alternatives to Electron?
I wish any Electron app would also be available as browser/web app, so I could just run it in a browser tab (and save some resources/memory?). This is possible for Spotify and Slack but not for Signal.
dmarinus··on How to use dig
What I've noticed is that people like the name of "dig". It has some advantages though (not described in this tutorial) like tracing and setting the DNS TTL but those are really edge cases. Host is indeed much more convenient!
dmarinus··on Installing Windows and Linux into the same partition
A trick I used some times was to create a big file on NTFS and use a loop back (block) device to format and mount it as ext4 (root) filesystem. The old kernel ntfs module had already write support for this. It was noticable slower but it didn't mess up the NTFS filesystem.
dmarinus··on AWS Cloud Control API, a Uniform API to Access AWS and Third-Party Services
Hmm this would also be nice for ansible.
