It would cause a spike/rise in blood sugar levels for a brief period, followed by spike in insulin level which would correlate with sleepiness.

> It's almost as if Hindus never contributed anything to the field of Science

You can thank Thomas Babington Macaulay, the designer of the "Indian education system" for that.

" We must at present do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern, – a class of persons Indian in blood and colour, but English in tastes, in opinions, in morals and in intellect. To that class we may leave it to refine the vernacular dialects of the country, to enrich those dialects with terms of science borrowed from the Western nomenclature, and to render them by degrees fit vehicles for conveying knowledge to the great mass of the population. > initially ignored

Initially? Has that changed now?

The founder, Nicholas Negroponte went on tear around the world claiming to have saved millions of children and being the father of tablet computing. He even talked about throwing OLPCs out of helicopters on to those brown and black masses. Even claimed that mothers would be better off getting a laptop than subsidized food. I recall he shat on some reporter who had the audacity to quote UNDP analysis that showed spending on lunch-at-school programs had far more impact than spending on teacher technology.

> because they take recycling money out of the pocket of the municipality

I was curious if the municipality is doing a good job of recycling but couldn't find numbers. Like for the city of Santa Clara, what percentage of the recycling is brought in by the municipality. I kind of think it is probably lower than that brought in by competitive commercial entities.

I did find:

"Recycling rates were up for all material types: aluminum rose to 85 percent, compared to 83 percent between January and June 2007; glass rose to 79 percent from 71; and the most common plastic, No. 1 PET, increased to 63 percent from 58."

None of the numbers are above 90, and PET is about 60% so having more people like this who bring these numbers up is a good thing.

> he had placed all of his "apples" into one basket--Rajeev

That sense of "blaming" doesn't come across in the article. I'm wondering why you would choose to see it that way.

Impressive. Any link to this? I'd love to take a look.

dm3730··on High-speed Wi-Fi rolls into 100th railway station in India
Sounds like there's room for a startup to provide a satisfactory internet service in your city.

Maybe also room for a startup that could keep your train station free of rats, monkeys and feces and trash.

The judge had a very odd interpretation of the contract and "maneuvered", it appears one sided to me.

" “By using cards they caused to be maneuvered in order to identify their value only to them,” the judge wrote, “Ivey and Sun adjusted the odds of Baccarat in their favor. This is in complete contravention of the fundamental purpose of legalized gambling as set forth by [New Jersey’s Casino Control Commission.] Ivey and Sun’s violation . . . constitutes a breach of their mutual obligation with Borgata to play by the rules” of the state’s law. "

That interpretation is equivalent to saying you can't do anything that improves the odds in your favor in any game. By this judge's reckoning, you have to just be a robot that sits passively and accepts all the hand exactly as dealt and not use any strategy to play the game to your advantage. That's fundamentally un-American if you ask me.

dm3730··on Harassment at Apple: A personal perspective
"Lots of down votes because of uncomfortable truth?"

No, downvotes because "the current state of arranged marriages in India" has absolutely nothing to do with the article. You're doing exactly what the author said was done to her.

"they made comments about not liking to work with me or with the growing number of Indian tech workers in the company. I also faced hostile remarks about Indian women being subservient and arranged marriages being forced on Indians for generations."

I have seen a scenario where a black colleague in a on-campus lunch discussion suddenly faced hostile remarks about black people being predisposed to crime. This is the exact same type of problem. Whether or not the topic is true is completely unrelated to how the topic is used to isolate and move the person from the category of a normal team member into "other" who can then be bullied or sidelined.
