dlhavema··on Ask HN: Have you shipped anything serious with a “serverless” architecture?
Are biggest complaint has been the cold start time. I cant say we have enough production data to see how much its effecting clients though.. We dont have enough constant traffic to keep them primed...

We are all in with AWS so the code build, cloudformation and code pipeline all work really well with lambdas.

dlhavema··on I Stop Celebrities from Blowing Their Money
Thats what i was thinking.. super sad.
dlhavema··on 60 FPS Retro Gaming on Mobile – Master System Emulator in JavaScript (2013)
Long pressing on android chrome does nothing. Maybe just my samsung...
dlhavema··on 60 FPS Retro Gaming on Mobile – Master System Emulator in JavaScript (2013)
Please don't destroy the back button... i had to click it 60 times to get back here...
dlhavema··on Blooming Password – A banned password check using a bloom filter
thanks for the clarification, with a fixed list that makes sense.
dlhavema··on Blooming Password – A banned password check using a bloom filter
but don't you still have to store/manage the whole 30gb list of hashes? the point of a bloom filter is it can store any arbitrary string in 7-8 BITS depending on how many hash functions you use to test for existence
dlhavema··on Home Depot stocked shelves with empty boxes in its early days
i agree with this, sometimes you find the one guy that knows a lot about one aisle ( out of 50-100 ), but that is maybe 1 in 5 trips.
dlhavema··on Pull to Refresh.js
do a search on thingiverse.com and then scroll down. if you search a big enough topic every 20 or 30 seconds as your scrolling it jumps up and you lose your place.. i'm not sure how to avoid this feature, but it is truly annoying
dlhavema··on We Shouldn’t Be Surprised at the Theranos Fraud
I know what you mean. Often enough any minority is criticized at all it is initially brushed off as simple X-ism..
dlhavema··on Pull to Refresh.js
I thought this pattern was losing favor? Since it makes generic swiping/navigation more difficult to track?
dlhavema··on Social Security says system's costs will exceed income this year
>and via the decreasing numbers of physicians who refuse to take Medicare or Medicaid.

do you mean "increasing number of physicians"?

dlhavema··on Microsoft has sunk a data centre in the sea to investigate energy efficiency
Sounds like tehy didnt know about this building [1]. That happened like 50ish years ago

dlhavema··on Demystifying CORS
this is a cool feature but the actual whitelist has to be held internally, in responding to an OPTIONS request, you can respond with * or concrete domain name. you can't return something like "www.example.com, www.foo.com" .

if you want to whitelist multiple domains you have to resolve this server side and check the requesting domain against your list of accepted domains.

this took me a little while to figure out.

dlhavema··on WAMP – Web Application Messaging Protocol
i personally like the stats on the last page of the slide show, and the tailing comment about being benchmarked on a Raspberry Pi. Not that anyone would host a server like this on a PI, but knowing how small of a machine is needed to run something like this is cool.

Of course you could probably do a pretty slick home automation system with this and only a Pi...

dlhavema··on Show HN: Recursive Recipes – directions to make food from scratch
This is very silly. I like it. I kinda compare this to an XKCD "what if" question about cooking. "What if i dont have eggs, but I have a chicken?" And so on...
dlhavema··on Edmunds Tesla Model 3 Long-Term Road Test Update for April
I so want memory seats. My wife is about 8 inches shorter than me...
dlhavema··on Proxy, a new JavaScript ES6 feature
The biggest thing that gets me when my coworkers do SF dev is how many times they have to refresh to see the new code. Its almost always two or three.

Ive seen the proxy thing trying to debugging. I didn't realize it was a set pattern/language feature.

dlhavema··on The fifth hyperfactorial: 5⁵×4⁴×3³×2²×1¹=86400000 milliseconds is exactly 1 day
we're only 15 years past the release date of the 2nd movie... unless you go with XKCD's theory/view about the matrix - https://xkcd.com/566/
dlhavema··on Keyless Cars and Their Carbon Monoxide Toll
Isnt that mainly because of HOA regulations? They are very prevelant in newer neighborhoods.
dlhavema··on Masterminding the largest lottery scam in American history
it sounds like they would have to run their tests with mock dates for every date out of the year to discover anything, unless they happened to run their tests on one of the 3 days mentioned in the code, they wouldn't find it. how many tests would they need to run to really tell if there is any bias?
dlhavema··on MoviePass no longer lets you see the same movie more than once
how often does that actually work?
dlhavema··on MoviePass no longer lets you see the same movie more than once
that was my thought too. i go see Star Wars on Monday you go see it on Friday and we share the subscription price.
dlhavema··on Our Dental Insurance Sent Us “Free” Internet-Connected Toothbrushes
I have the same insurance/tooth brushes. The thing that got me was they sent one of these for my 2 year old. Same thing as for me and my wife... they know how old the kids are ( 2, 5 and 6 ).. you think they'd "think of the children"...
dlhavema··on Tell HN: 17 years on the same game
thanks for the responses, node is kinda my language of choice for the moment, i'll have to update my profile a bit...

i guess i always got hung up on the background thread updating NPC's and the like, but really i should just start small..

dlhavema··on Escaping Poverty Requires Almost 20 Years with Nearly Nothing Going Wrong
my experiences must be atypical, because at my recent 3 jobs spanning about 11 years, there has been a vast majority of Asian (Indian, Japanese, Chinese, et ) members on our engineering teams.
dlhavema··on Tell HN: 17 years on the same game
a question on maintenance and all that. what kind of machines are required to maintain these? the client talks about flash and or websockets, so some sort of servers have to be maintained... I know servers are fairly cheap now.. that would be a cool story too..

If its been running for 30 years, how much memory/storage does the world take?

I had a Java programming examples book and it had a simple MUD implemented in a RMI, it was kinda neat and i always wanted to build a game out of it...

dlhavema··on History of Spring Framework and Spring Boot
We used spring boot heavily at my last job. It was very fast to stand up services and it led us to move away from a massive monolithic weblogic stack.. changes were pushed out so much faster...
dlhavema··on My Sony "smart" TV has updated itself and tried to force me to use a new app
I know its pushing the problem onto another device, but I dont use the "smart apps" on our bravia anymore. It's just an HDMI dumping ground. Right now a blue ray player has all the smarts

Edit: mainly cause they'd stopped working years ago...

dlhavema··on Using old laptop batteries to build homemade powerwalls
most of these I have seen have the charge protection tabs on the top. are the laptop batteries different?

most of my experience is from buying fresh cells to use as caving headlamp batteries back in the day.

dlhavema··on AWS documentation is now open source and on GitHub
Same here. This just kinda standardizes the process in a way that makes edits super clear...
