dlhavema··on Show HN: Store your luggage in local shops
True. There are the rare cases where you are the first to hit the ground and essentially create the market.
dlhavema··on I almost sold Baremetrics for $5M
I thought Woot.com was an early player in that space.
dlhavema··on Is Fry’s Electronics in trouble?
Is there still a market for kids with cash and no debit/credit card?
dlhavema··on 100 years ago, prohibition went into effect
Or when they get trashed, drive home and kill people along the way...
dlhavema··on A charity that spends a sliver of its money on those it purports to serve
Seems like it's too easy to setup a "charity" with little to no oversight. Just my outside opinion with little knowledge of the process or follow up done. This kinda reminds me of the Goodwill reports that came out bashing them...
dlhavema··on Calm Technology
I miss the old google home widget board thing. I know google hosted it but it felt very much like a simple dashboard and customizable.
dlhavema··on Highest Paying Tech Companies of 2019
> living within your means

This cannot be understated.

dlhavema··on Highest Paying Tech Companies of 2019
That's a good question. Eveyone focuses on rent/ mortgage. Do normal goods cost more cost you have to pay all workers more, do costs go up across the board?
dlhavema··on An Introduction to AWS Cognito – Pros, Cons, and Use Cases
I'll say it's pretty cool, unless you want to change one of many configurations after creating a user pool. Many are unchangeable after pool creation. Very difficult to plan ahead or adjust when requirements change.
dlhavema··on Millions of SMS messages exposed in database security lapse
You don't code anything in your app to get/use this feature. If you click the suggestion iOS fills in the passcode for the user.
dlhavema··on Show HN: Open-Source Alternative to Intercom, Drift, Zendesk, FreshChat
Related, the chat window that pops up on android is off screen about 15 to 20% but still workable.

I am very familiar with Intercom, and this looks comparable at first glance. Nice start.

dlhavema··on Draw.io: Online Diagramming Website
I primarilly use Gliffy cause it is built into confluence, but whenever it is not available, I go right to draw.io. Its a pretty cool tool for this.
dlhavema··on Nostalgia for Minecraft
The lack of PVE kills it for me, but it's a really fun creative game. Build a cool thing, smash it, repeat.
dlhavema··on Friended is a new social network that wants to get real
Half your phone bill? Wow. Granted I have 3 people one the plan bit I'm more like 7x the monthly fee
dlhavema··on Microsoft Access: The Database Software That Won't Die
My first real programming job was a summer project for a tutoring program at ASU where they managed their schedules in a shared access database. It got bad as it would get overwritten often. 10 students would show up with no tutor, or a tutor would sit and wiat for students who would never come cause they rescheduled.

We copied the structure to SQL server, built some stored procs ( only allowed way to access the DB at the time ) and fronted it with a bunch of aspx pages. They loved it beyond my expectations.

All of that was new learning as I had only ever done the LAMP stack at that time and this was all Microsoft stuff.

dlhavema··on Ask HN: How many of you have been impacted by a layoff?
Just a large chunk of my coworkers at Apollo. I was never laid off or anything and I've worked in software engineering for 13 years now.
dlhavema··on Cosmoteer: A starship design, simulation, and battle game
I didn't like the build and fight game play: designs and then watch AI fight other AI.

Do you control your movements and shooting in this game? Looks pretty fun

dlhavema··on Drone Bubble Bursts, Wiping Out Startups and Hammering VC Firms
This. This is the main thing I want to do.

I havent bought one yet, but have flown a cool DJI/FPV setup around a local mountain. It was really fun

dlhavema··on Amazon will pull the plug on dash buttons
They're also roughly 2x the cost of the dash enterprise buttons. Granted they have more functionality
dlhavema··on Amazon will pull the plug on dash buttons
If you're talking price point $5 would be $0 profit by that bill of items.

Was the original/intended purpose to always sell them at cost and make the profits up through increased sales?

dlhavema··on Goldman Sachs is spending $100M to shave milliseconds off stock trades
How is the 145 billion calculated? If I buy and sell with a 100$ 100 times does that count as $10,000 or $100?
dlhavema··on Ethiopia Plants 350M Trees in One Day to Combat Drought and Climate Change
They were assuming 10% would participate, so that's why he had to bump it up 10x to accommodate.
dlhavema··on Lambda School fined $75k by CA for operating without state approval [pdf]
You need a happy medium here. You don't want to allow scammers of course, but also don't want to overly protect the incumbents so no one else can disrupt the space.
dlhavema··on Sony's mini air conditioner can fit in your pocket
Sorta anecdotal but I live in Phoenix, AZ and in the summer time it is regular 110f+ during the day and close to, if not still above 100f at night. Opening windows doesn't help.

Most of our electric bill in the summer goes to the AC unit(s). Some people have evap/swap coolers but those only go so far, and stop working during monsoons cause it's already too humid.

Edit: its 8:45am and 97f outside.

dlhavema··on YouTube was launched as a dating site
I never knew this. It gives a little more meaning to the domain name, but even in it's current form, the domain name still works, just less literally.
dlhavema··on Kenya launches largest wind power plant in Africa
Nice segue to a completely off topic military/political bunny trail.
dlhavema··on How to Remove Bixby from Samsung Phones
Wow cool can you do that on an S9? I'm gonna try right now. I'm of the same opinion, Bixby is useless...

Edit: looks like I can't on my S9, or don't have the latest version...

dlhavema··on Learning Golang – From Zero to Hero
I love reading articles like this. I really want to find a good work related reason to learn Go, just not a thing right now.

My main concern with the article is the massive abundance of typos. Like more so than a normal article written by a programmer. They make me stop and double check if I read it wrong, it is a term or something I haven't seen before, or just a typo.

dlhavema··on Amazon: Carbon emissions from our Australian bit barns aren't for public viewing
So are they "privately" reporting data to the regulator and the regulator wants to publush it for public review effectively? I'm guessing all the data gets published or this wouldn't be an issue...
dlhavema··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
That's really good success! Weve had a few people come out of a bootcamp and try to apply for jobs, but none were even close to getting hired. I think their bootcamp was only a 2 or 3 months though
