dlhavema··on Ask HN: What huge mistake did you make early in your career?
As a learning exercise yes, no need to "learn" with new production code :)
dlhavema··on Apple, Mozilla, Google, Microsoft form group to standardize browser plug-ins
Are you referring to applets? Or the webstart(?) thing?
dlhavema··on G7: Rich nations back deal to tax multinationals
Isn't there a way to block internal up transfers and actual IP sales? Is that the issue? Like we want to block google to Google transfers, but not company a to "actually unrelated" company b?
dlhavema··on Amazon US customers given one week to opt out of mass wireless sharing
Maybe. I'm on Android "version 2.2.403931.0" and no option...
dlhavema··on Amazon US customers given one week to opt out of mass wireless sharing
Looks like I don't have the update yet. I don't see this menu option.
dlhavema··on Four years after a man was executed, someone else’s DNA found on murder weapon
While I agree with you seems like this was a sketchy case to go forward with the execution, like me, you already had a strong opinion about capital punishment before you read the article.
dlhavema··on Analytics suggest 96% of users leave app tracking disabled in iOS 14.5
Pretty sure they are referring to the system level switch that blocks the prompt and auto-denies every app.
dlhavema··on Analytics suggest 96% of users leave app tracking disabled in iOS 14.5
I think the market has said otherwise. Among aware engineers, sure. Among Suzie home maker and Tommy Q the support rep? Doesn't seem so. Facebook is free and has how many people now? ( Just one example I know )
dlhavema··on Analytics suggest 96% of users leave app tracking disabled in iOS 14.5
It would ask once per app, per install. This global setting just auto denies it for every that asks, and I'm pretty sure ( but haven't tested ) retroactively denies any app you had previously said yes to.

Source: I'm a newly role changed iOS developer at my job.

dlhavema··on Shop Class as Soulcraft (2006)
I Can't agree more. Overly specific details in a ticket might mean that's the only place where the problem exists or it might mean that's the only place the problem was detected. Which lead to very different root causes...
dlhavema··on Figma to React
If you're talking a user downloading it with mobile data, it's gonna take a while before it can setup and show anything.

I think someone else said there are other optimizations that happen when you shop production code.

dlhavema··on Mannequin.js: An Articulated Mannequin Figure Library
Could you possibly use this as a basis to make xkcd/ "stick figure" like posable characters?
dlhavema··on Salesforce Deal to Buy Slack Expected to Be Announced Tuesday After Market Close
Wow. We've used slack since we started 4 years ago and have no plans of moving to my knowledge.. I've been there for about 94% of those 4 years too..
dlhavema··on Tips for Performant TypeScript
I agree compilation speed really only affects the developer in the build chain. Execution speed affects the client and the end user. Seems like the focus should be more on the latter.
dlhavema··on Roblox S-1
My girls ( 8 and 9 ) love Minecraft. Especially any kind of dragon mod.
dlhavema··on Show HN: Personal CRM: Note taking, the way it should be
Pretty cool app and idea. I always struggle remembering little details before meetings and just in general about people..

Small typo in one of your images ( exec.png ) reads: "lastest notes about Marvin"

dlhavema··on Ask HN: What did you purchase that measurably improved your quality of life?
I had that closet too, I ended up giving them away and stopping buying those things for a good long while. I liked buying them and looking at them, but never ended up building very much
dlhavema··on Shapez.io: open-source base building game inspired by Factorio
Add a link or something to not completely turn away mobile browsers. I can't play now, but would love to see what it's like with screenshots or something...
dlhavema··on Indian robot climbs trees to harvest coconuts
I had a fresh coconut once on vacation it was amazing. nothing like any of the other coconut I've ever had before.
dlhavema··on Tampa teen accused of being ‘mastermind’ behind Twitter hack
And then he'll join up with Acid Burn to take down some skateboarding CEO...
dlhavema··on Why Do People Stay Poor? [pdf]
Very true
dlhavema··on Emulating Nintendo Switch Games on Linux
So is this kind of the idea of going after the dealers and not the users?
dlhavema··on Minecraft@Home
I think the post is more about not contributing more to a closed source system like this. Play the game all you want. They are suggesting supporting an open source project instead of well funded commercial software...
dlhavema··on Companies made millions building unemployment websites that didn’t work
And sales commissions can be crazy high too. They are not just paying the IT people.. admins, HR, etc all need to get paid too.. not trying to defend crazy high rates...
dlhavema··on Is It Time to Kill the Penny?
And if you get a gift card instead of cash it's typically free. I did that and walked away with an 80$ Starbucks card. The other time, the machine had an issue connecting and a normal checkout clerk gave me cash directly, again no fee.
dlhavema··on I Know What You Download on BitTorrent
I see nothing wrong with "lending a movie" to someone.. But how often does the "lent" movie ever get "returned" ( read: deleted )? If not your analogy breaks down and it becomes the same as physically copying a VHD/DVD/CD.
dlhavema··on The University Is Like a CD in the Streaming Age
I'm glad you made the flat earther connection here. I was thinking the same thing and you validated my thought process
dlhavema··on Video Games Are the Future of Education
I wouldn't attributed this to programming but pre-planning in general benefits a lot of places. That goes to the comment in the article that "a bad plan is better than no plan".

I totally know what you mean a spaghetti factory is just as hard to deal with as spaghetti code... until you have bots and you can actually copy paste your factory around to cut and paste your factory it's super hard to fix the problem.

dlhavema··on Video Games Are the Future of Education
I played civilization a lot back in the day mainly because it was the only game my computer could play. I monitor was so crummy I think it had EGA graphics. because of this now I know what the gardens of Hammurabi and a lot of other of the wonders of the world just by building them and knowing a little bit about what they did for the civilization that actually built them.

factoria is another good one that's really really fun and can also be really really educational if you think about the materials and resources and how you combine them. also if you really want to go crazy with it learning some math will help you fully optimize your factory but it's some pretty complicated math, at least for me.

dlhavema··on Teach Yourself Computer Science
Some people learn great by watching videos. Some people learn great by reading books. I personally learned the best by taking an example ripping it apart and changing it to do something new.
