dkobia··on The Strange Disappearance of Cooperation in America (2013)
Jon Meachum boils this down to two statistics in The Soul of America... "Only 17 percent of Americans trust the government (down from 77 percent in 1955), and average household income is $58,000, some $70,000 less than what a family of four needs for a middle-class life."
dkobia··on American Airlines Is Quietly Bringing Back the 737Max
Interesting. American Airlines was also one of the first the first to not block middle seats for social distancing. Smells of desperation.
dkobia··on The Problem of Free Speech in an Age of Disinformation
I too grew up without free speech in a dictatorship and believe fervently in free speech. However I believe too that dictating to a company what speech they can have or can't have on their platform is a violation of free speech in itself. It is their right to disagree with someone's opinion and to deny them access to their platform. If we disagree with that action we punish with our eyeballs, or our wallets or we build our own.

That these platforms are so huge is a problem for sure but doesn't automatically classify them as institutions owned by the public. There are other ways to deal with companies that get too big.

dkobia··on Facebook doesn't plan to take strong action against anti-vaccination posts
Attractive and somewhat lazy ideological opinion. The world is so complicated and the group most susceptible to conspiracy theories in most cases also happens to have the least access to the type of education that prioritizes critical thinking.
dkobia··on Unlimited Information Is Transforming Society
"There's no such thing as information overload. There's only filter failure."

~ Clay Shirky

dkobia··on Facebook prohibits music or music listening experience on Live
It has been an especially tough time for DJs who as you can imagine are severely affected by Covid19. A game of copyright whack-a-mole has been going on across other platforms for a few years now (SoundCloud, MixCloud, etc.), exacerbated now by a move to live streaming over the last few months.

Live streaming has been a great way to avoid getting tagged for copyright infringement vs a pre-recorded upload which can automatically be scanned for violations, so it is easy to see why this was a problem for Facebook. They basically brute forced a solution to avoid legal responsibility.

Via SoundClouds guidelines: "The best way to avoid copyright infringement is to ensure that you don't use anything created by someone else. Simple as that.". It has just been hard to find an equitable balance between original music creators and mix creators. "Fair Use" is such a gray area here and is barely defensible.

dkobia··on Greenland ice has shrunk beyond return, study finds
The irony that maybe our ancestors escaped Mars eons ago after similarly destroying the planet to seed earth and start afresh. Untrue but plausible based on how we've handled things this far. Self-interest and the tragedy of the commons.
dkobia··on Store and Sync Passwords with Dropbox Passwords
Personally I created 256 bit encrypted disk images for sensitive stuff and put them on Dropbox. this has worked for quite a few years.
dkobia··on Store and Sync Passwords with Dropbox Passwords
I am quite happy to pay 1Password for the same. The benefits of biometric access on my phone and auto filling forms is too hard to pass up.
dkobia··on TikTok and Microsoft’s Clock
The United States loses the moral high ground moving forward and Microsoft gets a blemished gem. The machinations of this deal are unsightly. Just because this is how the game is played in China doesn't mean we have to do it too.
dkobia··on TikTok’s Chinese owner offers to forego stake to clinch U.S. deal – sources
As much as I agree and being from a "third world" country myself, I can still remember China banning Facebook and Google in 2009/2010. Everyone has had to bend over backwards to gain access to the Chinese market while giving them free reign to the rest of the world.
dkobia··on The App Store is a monopoly: Here's why the EU is correct to investigate Apple
As a consumer I love Apple's commitment to high quality apps - a side effect of their review process. As a seller on their marketplace 30% is extremely high. 30% of every sale! For context Amazons referral fee averages about 15%.
dkobia··on How the 2021 Ford F-150's onboard generator works
This. There are some features I decided to turn off in my car or the battery would just die every time. 70 amp hour batteries used to be way more than enough, but cars today have unbelievable battery draw that manufacturers have not taken into account -- heck my parking brake of all things is power driven. All the battery draw leaves little for cranking up.
dkobia··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
I absolutely love Spotify, but for some reason I just can't get with it on podcasts. I'm not sure if it's the interface or maybe I just like to keep my music and podcasting separate? They're both audio yes -- but completely different somehow.
dkobia··on The DynamoDB Book: Data Modeling with NoSQL and DynamoDB
Any chance for a Kindle friendly mobi?
dkobia··on Dropbox ignore file or folder in beta
FYI I tried this feature out a few months ago and found it to be useless for build folders. Extended attributes (xattr) get lost everytime you recreate a file/folder - think 'build', 'node_modules' etc. Additionally Dropbox broke selective sync which is even more infuriating. All this combined means my hard drive is running all the time.
dkobia··on Flutter looks good, but is painful
@tobiaswk - good job with your apps! I completely agree with Android and UI design which is painful. Flutter is far from perfect but a non designer can create something pretty decent. Users appreciate the experience.
dkobia··on The New Dropbox Sucks
I've been on the fence about iCloud for sometime. Dropbox made the choice easy for me.
dkobia··on High-Tech can’t last: there are limited essential elements
Asteroids!
dkobia··on Huawei P30 Pro camera review
Politics aside, I have Huawei phones and tablets and they're probably the best bang for your buck you'll get.
dkobia··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
I work on both a MacBook pro 15 with 32 gb and a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 32gb everyday. Apple is still light years ahead. The inconsistent UI on a Windows machine is infuriating, but Office is unsurprisingly powerful for teams. 8-core? I'll happily take it. Windows is retarded. The lack of empathy in user experience adds up to countless wasted hours.
dkobia··on Flutter desktop shells
Beautiful!
dkobia··on Burger King is introducing a vegetarian patty from the start-up Impossible Foods
Impossible burgers are awesome and I've had quite a few. It also really depends on how it's made and how it's dressed up - as with any burger. My only lingering issue is that it is a highly processed food, and psychologically it helps to know what you're eating.
dkobia··on SpaceX Crew Dragon Docks with International Space Station
Well said.
dkobia··on Running Fast SQL on DynamoDB Tables
Run SQL queries using Athena and a Dynamodb crawler in Glue. It's not that complicated.
dkobia··on WhatsApp has an encrypted child porn problem
You can't have it both ways. End to end encryption or open groups with censorship by moderation, pick one. This is a side effect of private clubs and private online communities. While I don't condone the behavior, we need to get more creative on how to police this than putting in place mechanisms for violating everyone's privacy, which is just lazy and dangerous.

It's hard to read some of these stories without ignoring the current surge of schadenfreude that writers are capitalizing on.

dkobia··on Ask HN: As programmers, why are we still going to the office?
As a remote worker of over 12 years I'm definitely enjoying getting back to in person interaction, especially during the colder months when people socialize a lot less. A mix of going to an office and working at home is hard to beat.
dkobia··on Google's cross-platform Flutter UI toolkit goes 1.0
I've been using Flutter for a little over a year and I absolutely love it. Hot reloading, Dart tree shaking, Static type checking, etc. What's not to love? Dart widgets are consistent, making UI design easy peasy. UI widgets are definitely skewed to Android (for now), but iOS work is moving quite fast.

Try it, you'll love Dart.

dkobia··on WhatsApp's chief business officer Neeraj Arora is leaving the company
Curious what the role of a business officer at WhatsApp is considering it doesn't currently have a business model.
dkobia··on GitHub Is Microsoft’s $7.5B Undo Button
The GitHub acquisition feels like losing a piece of ones "coding" childhood if there's such a thing. When we grow up, find out how things work and the innocence is lost because it feels like there is a malevolent undercurrent.
