djyaz1200··on Don’t Tell Your Friends They’re Lucky
Agree, I think the title is more about marketing the book than accurately describing the content. That said I think there are a lot of people (me included sometimes) who make interesting things without thinking carefully about what the user really wants to achieve... so the book has some value.
djyaz1200··on Why I don't believe in Uber's Success
Amen! VC's favor this approach because this is the only strategy that requires their scale of money. If you just go out and make a useful product and sell it to people you may do very well... but there isn't room for the kind of huge returns VC's need. Through massive subsidies the VC's are trying to buy monopolies in entire markets... and it may be that transportation is such a large market that no amount of private capital can deter competition indefinitely.
djyaz1200··on Don’t Tell Your Friends They’re Lucky
There is a pretty good book that addresses some of the business aspects of this... "Competing Against Luck" by David Duncan and Clayton Christiansen (the same guy who wrote "The Innovator's Dilemma"). I'm not done with it yet but so far it goes into some interesting detail about how to reframe everything people pay for as jobs... and that building a successful business is about understanding the job to be done and mastering it.
djyaz1200··on Certified Malice
Definitely an issue. Chrome has already changed the SSL indicator to just read "secure" rather than naming the cert.
djyaz1200··on Forget Survival of the Fittest: It Is Kindness That Counts (2009)
There is a thoughtful book on this topic called "Love is the Killer App" that makes the argument that in a commodity based economy the most ruthless prevail (think 20th century steel industry), but in an information based community the most altruistic prevail (the internet). I didn't agree with all of it but it was a good read and a helpful counterpoint to the widely held view that being ruthless is good for business.
djyaz1200··on A Mysterious Virus That Could Cause Obesity
For the sake of discussion let's just say this virus makes people more prone to Obesity (certainly there is a lot of correlation)... It would be interesting to test if the damage and/or mechanism of this virus is a one time event or ongoing issue. What would happen if the people and/or chickens were given anti-viral meds... or took lots of vitamin C? Is the effect reversed? I have no idea what would happen but I'd be very interested to see. HIV patients given antiviral drugs sometimes experience lipodystrophy, which may somehow be related but that's just a wild guess.

Also, if I'm a ruthless chicken farmer wouldn't I want all my chickens to have this since it makes them heavier based on the same food intake?

Finally, what's going on with the people who have the antibody but haven't gained weight? What's different about their immune function, diet and/or lifestyle.

djyaz1200··on Milking the iPhone
Yep, like that only (as you point out) using a phone instead of a laptop.
djyaz1200··on Milking the iPhone
Agree, lighting ports on iOS devices also offer a lot of flexibility. Apple's processors also offer far more power than is needed to just run a phone. They seem to be converging towards this.
djyaz1200··on Milking the iPhone
Apple needs to do one thing to reassert their dominance for the next decade... allow users to easily connect iphones to displays and keyboards. Iphones easily have enough CPU to run a simple desktop for the average email/websurfing/video consuming public. Why even buy a desktop or laptop if you could just plug in your phone and have all your documents/programs right there along with high speed internet. No brainer.
djyaz1200··on How Do Venture Capitalists Make Decisions?
Agree! I'm far more interested in how they con LPs into paying them to lose money. Why should entrepreneurs do all the work to build companies, create jobs and solve problems for customers when we could just get paid to lose money for pension funds?!
djyaz1200··on Amazon Lex – Build Conversational Voice and Text Interfaces
Seems like these chat bots have A LOT of lock in. So the question is which one to pick? This one? IBM Watson? Others? Which horse are you betting on and why?

Amazon making this is great because it's developer friendly and will surely fall in price and improve in quality over time. They also have to make it work well because it's a critical ordering channel for them going forward.

Seems like IBM has been focused on this for years though? Worried they will try to make this a profit center though... rather than continually dropping the price.

Other companies working on this I should be aware of?

Thoughts?

djyaz1200··on Why VCs sometimes push companies to burn too fast
VC's want your company to quickly "Blow up" one way or another.
djyaz1200··on Hunting submarines with magnets
From space... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swarm_(spacecraft)
djyaz1200··on Apple cuts USB-C adapter prices in response to MacBook Pro complaints
This move and Phil Schiller's justification of the compromises of the Macbook (https://techcrunch.com/2016/11/02/phil-schiller-justifies-th...) seem uncharacteristic of Apple. Perhaps they are realizing they have made mistakes?
djyaz1200··on How Steve Jobs Became a Billionaire
I agree and LOL to "Sociopath Lottery" ... well said. I think using Jobs name in this article is kind of clickbait'ish... the real story here is a dedicated group of talented people with a loving culture made something amazing. Steve didn't do that, he funded that.
djyaz1200··on Signs that a startup is focused on stuff that doesn’t matter
Completely agree with the premise here. I think some of the causes of this are worth exploring/understanding. I believe part of it is just about getting laid. Startups are cool right now, they are like the modern band. You can create a sense of "...maybe this guy is the next Zuck?" with girls fairly easily. Another part of it is that there are a lot of people in the startup community that prey on others and/or have no clue. I wasted a shameful amount of time on what I've heard YC folks refers to as "playing house" because that's what people in my community were encouraging, and I didn't know any better. Only when I stopped going to meetups and searching for validation elsewhere was I able to truly begin building a business by focusing exclusively on solving problems for clients.
djyaz1200··on How Snowden's Disclosures Made All Our Data Safer
Here is a 60 minutes story about Echelon from well over a decade ago... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfdm78zcv8o

He is famous now which I think constitutes personal gain.

Clearly you all love him and believe he is a hero. Good for you... I am not impressed.

djyaz1200··on How Snowden's Disclosures Made All Our Data Safer
I've posed a question because I'm interested in a thoughtful answer. You can change my mind... I want to know why I should be thankful for this guy's actions.
djyaz1200··on How Snowden's Disclosures Made All Our Data Safer
Yes but he didn't tweet out the wikipedia link he data dumped classified materials.
djyaz1200··on How Snowden's Disclosures Made All Our Data Safer
Does anyone else think this Snowden as a hero stuff is a bit much? The guy revealed government programs that ANYONE who cared to look knew existed decades before (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECHELON). I'll grant he sure raised awareness but does that make him a hero? ...and the recent increased attention to security seems to be heavily influenced by commercial hacking concerns rather than a response to government surveillance? Also... does anyone seriously think the government can't decrypt your data? Do we want every soldier, employee and contractor working in our government to use giant data dumps as a legit way to lodge their objections? Convince me why this guy shouldn't be in prison?
djyaz1200··on Battery technology may emerge as a trillion-dollar threat to credit markets
I hope they choose that path!
djyaz1200··on Battery technology may emerge as a trillion-dollar threat to credit markets
Those companies have a STRONG incentive to avoid disruption and this co2 to ethanol technology might be helpful in that regard? http://energy.gov/articles/scientists-accidentally-turned-co...
djyaz1200··on Cuomo signs bill prohibiting Airbnb listings in NYC
You should have seen these apts. Not fancy. You're right I'm not working at Taco Bell, but you almost certainly make more money than I do. I was able to live a multi-city life on a shoestring budget thanks to a narrow window provided by AirBnb. I'm disappointed others may not have that opportunity.
djyaz1200··on Cuomo signs bill prohibiting Airbnb listings in NYC
I am disgusted but not surprised. When I was commuting back and forth between SFO and PDX I had apartments in both cities. I was able to dramatically offset my costs by Airbnb'ing the apartment I wasn't in at any given time... this helped me launch my business and I'm so thankful for that! The first time this worked out it was an obvious win/win for me and the renter. Right after being excited my next thought was... "wow this really let's the little guy do a little better"... I'm sure this won't last...
djyaz1200··on Silicon Valley Cozies Up to Washington, Outspending Wall Street 2-1
Tech enjoyed a long period of minimal regulation as it was changing/moving fast and government didn't understand it. No longer. Just like auto, finance and other big industries tech will be heavily regulated. These regulations will be used to ensure those with money and power are able to keep it. Like it or not that's how our country works.
djyaz1200··on 2017 will be the year of interactive email
"You actually own your mailing list. There is no pay to play — just send them"
djyaz1200··on Ask HN: Email provider for sending transactional emails?
We use mailgun and have had a pleasant experience. Good luck!
djyaz1200··on How Apple Scaled Back Its Titanic Plan to Take on Detroit
Apple's move into auto seems to have been about recruiting. For a brief time some of the most talented young engineers were favoring Tesla over Apple because the mission was more interesting.
djyaz1200··on The Rise of Hypersonic Weapons
Seems like we might want to address this and other threats by putting "dial a yield" nuclear devices on our missile defense weapons?
djyaz1200··on Replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phone catches fire on Southwest plane
Why are we allowing these on airplanes?! Are we waiting for someone to leave one of these devices in their checked luggage so it can start a fire that downs a commercial airliner before banning them?!
