djyaz1200··on Apple execs describe a “unique arrangement” with Netflix (2018)
Having this requirement when dealing with tech monopolies is uniquely helpful because in some cases there is no alternative. We can always rent, shop or bank other places. I'd argue where there isn't a thriving marketplace of choice monopolies should have to have the same rules with all their partners.
djyaz1200··on Apple execs describe a “unique arrangement” with Netflix (2018)
Tech companies that reach monopoly scale (like Apple, Facebook, Amazon) should have to disclose all their agreements and honor a "Most Favored Nation" clause giving all companies the same pricing and access as the best negotiated agreement with any one company. This is the most reasonable way I can think of without breaking them up to prevent them picking winners and losers as new opportunities emerge. If you have a better plan I'd be glad to hear it.

In my view this a huge business opportunity and an actual use case for crypto.

djyaz1200··on High-profile autism genetics project paused amid backlash
I see your point. It's likely I'm only seeing the people who thrive. The problem is whose definition of "properly interact" are we going with? In my experience people on the spectrum tend towards extreme honesty. What they often aren't good at is understanding all the lies, half truths and hints that are part of socializing... in part to protect the brittle egos most of the rest of us have.
djyaz1200··on High-profile autism genetics project paused amid backlash
"not all forms are disadvantageous" <- this! Some of the most talented and happy people I've ever worked with were "on the spectrum". Our society has a reflex to make everything different a disease instead of acknowledging and celebrating our differences.
djyaz1200··on You either die an MVP or live long enough to build content moderation
LOL at the title, I think the silver lining is your moderation becomes a barrier to entry/competitive advantage if done well and kept hidden. It's one of the last things in software that's hard to copy.
djyaz1200··on The open calendar, task and note space is a mess
I'm surprised I haven't heard of a "Twilio of Calendars" that just makes this all dirt simple and easy to integrate into any 3rd party application quickly and comes with user configurable UI libraries for mobile and desktop etc. If this does exist please let me know because I've been looking and would pay for it.
djyaz1200··on The history of Google messaging apps
Respectfully I think what the past has shown is that the people who can nail this aren't "in the building" so to speak @ Google. They have fantastic engineers but I'd argue a true unified communication tool is primarily a UI/UX challenge. I'm sure they have great UI/UX people there but this does not seem to be a key part of their culture.

This was a mistake on my part but it was my singular ambition in life to build a messaging company to sell it to them to make money off this problem. After moderate success (several million in revenue) I reached out to them and they blew me off. So at least in my experience they aren't overly excited about acquiring companies to get people in the building who specialize in this.

djyaz1200··on Wealthy people are renouncing American citizenship
That is a bummer but on the plus side the USA will send the Navy Seals to get you if someone kidnaps you. That's worth something. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rescue_of_Jessica_Buchanan_and...
djyaz1200··on On Depression and Founders
There is a mental health aspect to this for sure, but there is also a practical one. From a mental health perspective people who are bipolar are very over represented in the founder pool because mania is rewarded in many startup situations. Even if one is not clinically bipolar the experience of running a startup is like imposing this condition on yourself in many ways. There is also a practical aspect to this problem, if you don't want founders to kill themselves give them a job board. I'm 43 years old with no degree, I've taken two startups including the one I'm running now from zero to $50K in MRR on shoestring budgets. If I fail this time my fall back plan is to work at a tire store or be a police officer. Yeah I've been through the Google hiring process and others but in the end I always come up just short, because I'm a little weird and I'm not a specialist... I'm a generalist. Not enough businesses actively recruit failed founders, this promotes the succeed at all costs mentality which is obviously toxic.
djyaz1200··on Footage proves bats were kept in Wuhan lab
The "Where did the virus come from discussion" is looking too much like how we handle the endless debate on climate change. We should not wait for certainty about the origins of the virus to have a discussion about how we should handle these labs. If we are going to have them, and let them research "gain of function" these labs should only be in very remote areas. Travel to and from them should be restricted and staff should subject to long quarantines and extensive testing before coming back to civilization. Putting them in the middle of cities and sending their workers out into that city every night is a recipe for disaster. Since the virus has already killed many more people than a nuclear weapon would have, even if there is only a minor chance it came from one of these labs we should demand these labs be isolated.

djyaz1200··on Launch HN: Explo (YC W20) – Customer-facing dashboards and reports
Very cool! We've spent a lot of time + money doing this ourselves. I'd be interested to understand the pricing model and self serve options. I'd also be interested in adding alarms so we could use this to monitor our system status. We do that now but without visuals and it would be nice to have a slick internal status page with graphs and alerts for unexpected values.

djyaz1200··on Ask HN: How to cope with the death of a dear person?
I'm very sincerely sorry for your loss :(

The book Love and Death by Forest Church was VERY helpful to me and I recommend it highly. It's written by a pastor who was terminally ill, but it isn't focused on religion (although it's a factor).

I lost my mom as a teenager and I'm 43 now so have some perspective on death, but I don't know your pain as it's yours. Here are the things I'm telling myself in case any of it is useful?...

I am thankful for the time I did have. I know that I will lose everything I love in this world when either I die or they die (best case). This means my capacity for loss and love are perfectly symmetrical, so I face loss with gratitude. I do not throw a tantrum that I didn't get more, as I am grateful to have had that love at all.

I know humanity at its best functions like one organism, and that organism deploys love to fill voids of sadness (as is happening in this comment section). If I look I find that in other areas of life as well, my friends, family and community at their best react to loss by loving each other more. Along those lines I work hard to have no unfinished business with anyone. The people I love know it because I have those awkward talks with them where I make sure they know it. At any moment I am able to face my own death or the death of others with peace. I don't have to be perfect in this regard, just my best.

I do not honor those that are lost with sadness. I honor them with celebration as that's what they want and deserve. Their life and my love for them was vibrant and beautiful and I must remember it for all of that. When I think back on good times with those that are gone and smile or even laugh I know their energy wherever it is, is alive.

I wish you the best on your journey.

In general favoring IP rights empowers those with less capital.

In general favoring operators over IP holders favors those with more capital.

Our economy already does a lot to favor those with more capital so the idea that companies that monetize IP are all trolls/terrorists is troubling. Surely there are some bad actors and they deserve the blowback consequences at work here, but surely some innovators hold valuable patents that big businesses are not respecting.

djyaz1200··on Convenience Is Destroying Us
Forgive me for sidestepping the larger debate about labor (which should be had), but I think Amazon should offer the option for customers to opt out of Sunday deliveries and put other reasonable constraints on the lengths they will go to serve us.

I'm not Mormon but their community has a practice of not shopping or doing business on Sunday. As long as we as customers demand services on Sundays businesses must stay open and some company will serve us... Instead of attacking this on the supply side we as customers should have the option to demand less. I know they offer small credits for accepting slower shipping but I specifically want to put some constraints on when the people who serve me are asked to work. I also don't want their insultingly small credit for this, I'd rather they plant a tree(s) with the savings.

I find this very interesting but I don't see the one thing answered I was looking for... which is how does he get ahold of these? I imagine even old missile guidance tech isn't something the US would want other countries to study in detail?

Related... I typed in "Buy Titan Guidance System" on Google (and now I'm probably on a watch list) and this popped up. A for sale listing for an old Titan silo... https://www.luxerealtyphotography.com/titan-missile-site-for...
