djeikyb··on Tools for Remote Software Development and Pair Programming
What kind of pair programming have you engaged in, beyond the "debug over the shoulder" scenario?
djeikyb··on Millennials are keeping libraries alive
Two parents, two kids, a few books each.. Fees at my local library growing up were $0.25 per item per day
djeikyb··on A Mac Podcast App You Can't Have
Often I'm on my laptop doing something and want to listen to a podcast. Why should I use two computers instead of just the one? Why should I expend both batteries? Also, my macbook does wireless speakers just fine..
djeikyb··on Ask HN: How to not bring emotion from work back home?
Strongly recommend avoiding Landmark and things like it. At least extensively research it. Landmark has a reputation for psychologically abusing and damaging participants. It has the flavour of an a-religious for-profit cult. Here's one story of many: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2009/08/landmark-42-hour...
djeikyb··on Millennials are killing chains like Buffalo Wild Wings and Applebee's
A lot of my millenial friends are mothers and fathers...

Anyway. We avoid Applebee's and Buffalo Wild Wings. The food is terrible. Even if it was mediocre, it's overpriced. There are better restaurants at the same price, or lower.

> and at the same time they are spending outside their means

It amuses me to no end that we millenials are simultaneously criticized for not spending enough.

djeikyb··on Vancouver bans whales and dolphins at aquarium
It elides the argument, but it's not hyperbole. Agitating groups like peta want to end animal captivity, completely. They believe humane captivity is a moral contradiction, extending to domestic cats and dogs.
djeikyb··on What was it like to self-learn programming before Stack Overflow? (2016)
i'm firmly in the SO generation. self/on-the-job -taught. web dev. i enjoy and take the journey of grokking problems, but many of my peers don't. slows me down a bit at first, but then i'm a local expert. feels like these people weren't taught how to think critically, or weren't able to apply that skill to code.

djeikyb··on Build a Better Monster: Morality, Machine Learning, and Mass Surveillance
So you didn't read the article? Perhaps you skimmed past the closing section.
djeikyb··on The Differences Between Red, Blue, and Purple Teams
As I was reading and scrolling I encountered a popup that obscured the content asking for email, and promptly left without finishing.
djeikyb··on Please stop writing new serialization protocols
If you remove the indentation, your > will markup the text as a quote. The indentation marks it as unwrapped preformatted text, which renders this text illegible on mobile.
djeikyb··on A lawsuit over Costco golf balls
kerataconus, which involves mild to severe astigmatism and a deformed cornea. from what i've read, it's a bit of both. there's a couple of newish soft contact designs i've heard of, but also there's the cost. at a point, glasses don't even provide sufficient correction.
djeikyb··on Drag – Change the way you work inside Gmail
I like opting in to read notifications. Using a tracking pixel for this is a privacy violation (albeit minor).
djeikyb··on False information on the internet is hiding the truth about onions
i usually find that internet recipes on aggregators are only good for theme and approach. like, what spices to use for a dish, and whether to braise or saute. the recipe tends to suck in proportion to how specific you read it to be.
djeikyb··on I say, damn it, where are the beds? New books on Orwell
see: shibboleth
djeikyb··on Python moved to GitHub
i absolutely loved it, especially compared to atlassian's bitbucket code review features.
djeikyb··on How To Write With Style (1999)
Cat's Cradle. Not too long. Themes include science, apocalypse, and religion.
djeikyb··on Pause, We Can Go Back
I appreciate your argument of the whole vs sum, but might it also be more expensive? Even if each member played perfectly in a single take, you'd need lots more recording time; member*lengthOfPiece instead of just lengthOfPiece
djeikyb··on Google AMP Cache, AMP Lite, and the Need for Speed
So I can share a real link. Remove google's huge amp toolbar. Scroll normally. Have a correctly rendered page. Because I want content from the source, not google.
djeikyb··on A Prettier JavaScript Formatter
The ones I've used for java have been consistently bad though. Autoformat as a commit hook leads to ugly code. Granted, I mean "bad" as in "gets ya 75% of the way".
djeikyb··on Uber Now Tracks Passengers’ Locations Even After They’re Dropped Off
"While in use" is exactly what they used to do. It allowed the driver to see my location as long as I left the app open. Now the uber app is unreasonable. It demands permission to stalk me at any time, else I use a hobbled version of the app.
djeikyb··on Ask HN: I will quit my job as a PM to join a coding bootcamp. Am I crazy?
I hesitate to call folks who do this "professional", but yes. I have also worked around people who blindly resolve all conflicts with their version and then comment out the failing tests.
djeikyb··on Apple Introduces What It Calls an Easier to Use Portable Music Player (2001)
It wasn't the first I'm sure, but I had a Creative Nomad MuVo. It was basically a flash drive, but with an audio out. It was super compact and powered by a AAA battery. I was pretty happy to upgrade to a spacious iPod, but the little nomad served well. Creative may have had others that predate the iPod?
djeikyb··on How Nextdoor reduced racist posts
It doesn't detract from your point, but.. I've been around hundreds of people who use the term fundamentalist proudly as sort of an advertisement for their brand of christianity. They looked askance at other flavours of christianity, believing those to have drifted from the fundamentals of the religion.
djeikyb··on Doctors issue warning about effects of LED streetlights on health
i'm a cyclist and i sometimes have to stop and get off my bike and wait for an oncoming cyclist to pass me (eg, on a multipath). it's not necessarily the brightness, it's that it's not constructed to be visible (and/or illuminate the road) without also blinding oncoming traffic. fortunately i haven't ever hit someone or something while blinded by an oncoming cyclist, but that's in spite of the crap bike light, not because it did a good job.
djeikyb··on Many See I.R.S. Penalties as More Affordable Than Health Insurance
I think it depends on the state. We don't have a national healthcare system (disregarding a couple programs for the old or very poor). Obamacare laid down only the barest of national standards.
djeikyb··on Many See I.R.S. Penalties as More Affordable Than Health Insurance
I live in Arizona. My employer only offers high deductible health plans with a pre-tax health savings account. So, I pay ~350 USD per month for the plan to cover my wife and I. Then I also contribute to this health savings account, my employer kicks nothing in. For this, we get basic vision and dental completely covered. That is, routine checkups, cleanings, basic prescription eyewear. Everything is else is subject to a high deductible, ~10,000 USD. The insurance covers something like 20% of certain kinds of expenses until we hit the deductible, then it covers 80-100%, per year.

A few weeks ago I had an asthma attack and went to see a doctor. The office refused to tell me in advance what I would be charged, or even what my insurance would be charged. I ended up being charged $200 after insurance, and then an additional $100 for prescriptions.

Because I had not previously selected a primary care physician, it was difficult to see a doctor in a reasonable amount of time. The doctor I did find gave wrong instructions for one of the prescriptions, and forgot to call or even write down the other.

djeikyb··on IntelliJ IDEA and the whole IntelliJ platform migrates to Java 8
The biggest thing I like about intellij over eclipse is that it uses the java and maven versions I want it to, instead of ecj and a bundled maven. This probably doesn't affect many, but was constantly a problem on some weird legacy projects I worked on. I agree that the other differences are largely superficial. (I've yet to pay for intellij)
djeikyb··on Eclipse Code Recommenders
i think the unique thing here is feedback gathered from other devs. note the percent markers. eg, here's all the auto-complete possibilities, 80% of devs chose java.util.List, only 3% chose java.awt.List.
