djeastm··on Your intellectual fly is open when you use an LLM to author a post (2025)
Same here.

I remember the first time my email client made an unsolicited suggestion about how to compose a thank you note to my grandmother. After seeing what it had autocompleted I thought, "oh, wow that's a lot better than I could do" for a split second before realizing, "wait, what the hell is wrong with me getting a computer to write a thank you note to my grandmother!"

I've never even tried to use AI to write since. I'd be so embarrassed.

djeastm··on Doomscrolling ourselves to death
>it's a very lengthy way to say few things

The author would likely suggest that we used to read for the variety of expression in the language in addition to becoming informed.

djeastm··on LLMs as a Cognitive Virus
It helps to have outside observers looking at the effects of a new technology and industry and not just depending on those within it to report for us.
djeastm··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
I think the alleged 2025 prediction comes from this part: https://youtu.be/xXCBz_8hM9w?t=2768

Interviewer: "What are you excited about in 2025? What's to come?" Altman: "AGI. Excited for that."

I don't know if that counts as predicting it would be here in 2025 or that he's just excited to work on it in 2025

djeastm··on Show HN: The load-bearing vocabulary of Claude
Strange. I see both "vacuous" and "vacuously" on the list.
djeastm··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
In a vacuum the immigration pause might be innocuous. But put into context the other actions and statements from this administration and it tells a deeper story.

Just think of it as the return of the 19th-century Know Nothings or the 1920s nativists if the Nazi comparison makes you squeamish.

djeastm··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
I think they might mean literally sailing. With sails.
djeastm··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Oh, there's definitely a well-used star-shaped public toilet off the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue.
djeastm··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
>What's the alternative really, seek advice from unsuccessful people?

Seek advice from the averagely successful people, since that is statistically what you're most likely to be.

djeastm··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Just wanted to say I appreciate your comprehensive comments in this thread. Learned a lot.
djeastm··on I'm becoming AI-blind
> but is missing critical components.

The human spirit. When you read a real person's thoughts you can often intuit the thought processes that led them to write it which aids understanding. Or at least have a general idea of "where they're coming from". But an AI is missing that. It just knows everything, without a "thought process". Instead of a flawed 3d person, we get a nice 2d picture instead.

djeastm··on AI boosted homework scores, then exam scores dropped: study
They left 20% of the 87,000 students as a control group. Is that not enough to allow for differences in environment, etc?
djeastm··on What we lost when search stopped making us think
Friendly PSA that you can add "udm=14" as a query string to a Google search to get just web search results. Then you can set your browser's default Google search behavior to do this automatically when entering anything in your search bar. I haven't seen an AI summary in months and it's much more pleasant.
djeastm··on I like 'em thick: an apology to my English teachers
English teachers aren't really there to provide you books you'll "like" or else they'd just be assigning the latest teen melodrama. They're instructing you on the different ways the English language has been used throughout its history and give you practice in analyzing it.

The Great Gatsby has themes about the American Dream, wealth, social class, love, ambition, and the gap between appearance and reality. Symbolism is easily teachable in the book, as well. And it's short, with relatively simple language and simple characters, which makes it a practical book for students.

djeastm··on Learning more about Claude's mathematical capabilities
>From these companies' standpoint, I think they would choose the latter.

Ever since these things came about I've wondered why they haven't been doing this the whole time. If they've got the "do-anything" robot and can scale a billion of them, why aren't they creating a Do-Everything conglomerate that disrupts every possible industry with zero/negligible labor costs?

The only answer I've come up with is that they still need to train/siphon off each industry's current expertise by having those users interact with the current models and adjusting. If that hypothesis is correct then within a few years they'll have no need for users anymore.

djeastm··on Auto mode is now the default in Claude Code
I think about the genius who suggested adding the "Repeat" in "Lather, Rinse, Repeat" on shampoo bottles.
djeastm··on Waymo in Dallas
>How can that be anywhere near financially sustainable.

It's not and it's indeed a very sad statement on public transport. My father has spent some time in his retirement Uber-ing and said it was shocking to him how many repeat customers he got that were having to spend so much just to get to a minimum wage job.

djeastm··on AI doesn't generate working products, that's still your job
It'd be interesting to see how HN from 2023 would react to this statement.
djeastm··on The AI Aesthetic
I miss the short era of glitchy dream-like AI images. I wish we'd never moved into real-ish, uncanny valley era.
djeastm··on Delayed Gratification – Proud to Be 'Last to Breaking News'
>if something is important enough for you to know, it will reach you eventually anyway

Through a friend or family member who's been watching the news?

djeastm··on Netflix employee fired for sharing personal details in retreat trust exercise
It's the difference between allowing something and encouraging something.
djeastm··on Claude Opus 5
We could say the same for the first factory-made clothes. Not as nice as the hand-tailored ones, looking a bit "off" when people wear them compared to custom-made, but orders of magnitude cheaper and more convenient.
djeastm··on Codex starts encrypting sub-agent prompts
>but you cannot even inspect the instructions those agents are working off of?

It makes more sense when you realize they don't want developers to be doing any coding at all. That's what they seem to be moving towards. From product manager to product via AI.

djeastm··on Ask HN: Add flag for AI-generated articles
They should refrain from using AI if it turns more people off to their ideas than it turns people on to them. There's no need to invent "AI police" as a big baddie here.

A strategy for people who feel they can't write is to just keep it short and sweet. Intelligence is such a potent force. It shines through.

What humans want most is to hear the voices of other humans.

djeastm··on Interrail: 6,379Km and 13 Countries over 7 weeks
I got a month-long Eurail pass in the mid 2000s. It was a great experience for me. Only a few places I chose/needed to buy a ticket. I don't know if it's still a good value, though.
djeastm··on How to read more books
You mean you haven't installed screens to the inside of your eyelids so you can micro-read whenever you blink? Amateur hour...
djeastm··on The glass backbone: Why the Army's logistics will break in the next war
>The Joint Chiefs know this.

Any thoughts on why they presented the operational plan to the President as an option then?

djeastm··on The glass backbone: Why the Army's logistics will break in the next war
I'd call him more of a catalyst than a mere symptom.
djeastm··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
It would really just save everyone a lot of time if we just said "branch" instead of "race". We all branched off from some shared ancestors somewhere back in the mists of time. We're all cousins from different branches of the family.
djeastm··on Gun Mistakes in Fiction Writing: Handgun Edition
Possibly, but I can't imagine a writer taking that kind of chance at the height of the Cold War just for verisimilitude.
