djd20··on Ask HN: Has anybody shipped a web app at scale with 1 DB per account?
This is true if your application is running on a shared servers - however if you have fully isolated application and database deploys then you really do benefit from a security and scalability perspective- and by being able to run closer to your clients. I'd also say that it works better when you have 100s, rather than thousands of clients, most probably larger organisations at this point.
djd20··on AMD vs. Intel 2020: Who Makes the Best CPUs?
Marginally, and not really when perf/$ is taken into account...
djd20··on PostgreSQL's Imperfections
Yeah - they indexed every single column.... also - what may not have worked for uber, will be just fine for 99% of usecases. How often do you work with that kind of load. What they moved to isn't so much mysql, rather mysql used as a key value store with 0 relational database usage. Not really a postgres issue, rather one of being too big for relational databases.
djd20··on PostgreSQL's Imperfections
You have a problem if you're trying to index every column...

Democrance | https://democrance.com | Python/Django/Pyramid hacker | Dubai, UAE | REMOTE optional (although Dubai-UK timezones - particulary with present circumstances)

We're a mature microinsurance SaaS startup, building software to help bridge the gap between insurance companies and those who are not insured or under-insured. High traffic, mobile first + SMS and USSD platform that requires some interesting compliance and security requirements with deployments in countries with variable quality infrastructure.

Stack is Vue.js with mostly django in the back end although pyramid/sqlalchemy is being introduced. Plenty of third party api integration. Gitlab, unit tests, and continuous integration are standard.

Mature and international dev team with a few PhD's included.

Ideally we're looking for a mature developer - industry experience is of course welcome, but not nessecary at all.

djd20··on Transputer
Yes - there where a number of commonalities and some research was done into running Occam (a language co-designed with the transputer) on the cell by means of a transputer VM: http://www.transterpreter.org/publications/pdfs/a-cell-trans...

Fun times :)

djd20··on “China's Tesla” NIO slashes thousands of jobs as losses mount
"Consumer Reports said multiple Volvo vehicles, including the XC60 and XC90 SUVs and the S90 sedan, were reported to have issues with their display screens and infotainment systems, including freezes and a failure to display. The publication said issues had also been reported with the XC60's climate system along with rattles inside its cabin, while the S90 also had problems reported relating to engine knocking or pinging. Of the three Volvo models it analyzed, Consumer Reports rated the XC60 as Volvo's most reliable vehicle and the S90 as the brand's least reliable vehicle."

Really? The infotainment system makes it rank low?

edit: and looking at the _actual_ report https://www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability-owner-satisf... - no volvo's on the list?

Democrance | Vue.js hacker, Devops | Dubai, United Arab Emirates | Full-time, Onsite | https://democrance.com

Democrance is an insurance technology company working to make insurance accessible and affordable to consumers via mobile and digital channels.

Our digital platform brings together key industries, including insurance and telecommunications companies as well as organisations which have large and previously untapped customer bases, allowing low-income, uninsured or under- insured populations to buy, pay for, use and claim for insurance simply using their mobile phone.

We're built on python/django/celery/postgres and rabbit, with a vue.js single page app to go with it and are serving some of the worlds biggest insurance companies while trying to improve access to insurance for the un-banked. Our stack is generally cloud provider independent, and we run across AWS/Azure/Alibaba as well as some on-prem installations, and use ansible and terraform to manage deployments.

We're a small team that's growing - your work will have a big impact on the company and on the under insured.

djd20··on ORMs Are Backwards
I don't see the issue - you're asking it to support a feature of one database on another, something it never claims to do. You need to use the same database for testing that you use in production.
djd20··on ORMs Are Backwards
Which you can only use compile time - not dynamically. That said I recall the sqlalchemy orm reject fields that it did not recognize. A decent IDE (pycharm) will hilight these for you on the Django orm. Having now used both the Django orm and SQLAlchemy extensively I prefer SQLAlchemy a lot. The Django ORM is usable, but many of its behaviours are odd and I agree that writing more complex queries gets ugly fast, unlike with SQLA where you can write some really hairy sql in a composable manner that makes it just so much more legible.
djd20··on Show HN: 2.5B people can’t afford internet – need your opinion on our solution
Makes sense - are you aware of the https://www.pine64.org/pinebook/ (99 USD) project? They have units that are shipping and are open source friendly/more hackable and can run chromeOS as well.
djd20··on Startups from Y Combinator’s S19 Demo Day 1
While its not in YC - there are a few SAAS type security startups aimed at SME's - such as https://intruder.io/ who I am a very happy customer of. This to me looks to be high growth.

Having lived in Dubai for the last 6 years - believe me there is nothing dry about the summer heat here. 45c and over 90% humidity regularly.

Tap water really is not an option in most of the world.
djd20··on Housing Can’t Be Both Affordable and a Good Investment (2018)
This depends how you implement rent control. The UAE market has rent controls - the landlord is only allowed to adjust rents within a % and if the rental index of the area is more than 10-15% higher than what you are currently paying. They are also building plenty of new housing to help keep rents stable. This second part is key - and needs to be there for this to work. Your comments assume a rental market that is not increasing in supply.
djd20··on Planting 1.2T Trees Could Cancel Out a Decade of CO2 Emissions
Actually - most desalination is done by reverse osmosis - which is much more efficient than evaporation.

djd20··on Petition: Revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU
Make sure to look at the % map, not the 'number of voters map' as that is a more representative picture.
djd20··on Superior Testing: Stop Stopping
I think the key distinction there is - you'd ship the games, and never change them again. What the tests do is let you continually evolve the software over a long period of time. What you need tests for is to give you confidence that chaning system a doesn't impact system b negatively, allowing the software to continue evolving at a much faster pace once you have a good test suite in place.
djd20··on Communicating Sequential Processes (1978) [pdf]
Ha - nice to see this - myself and a few others built a transputer compatible VM - http://www.transterpreter.org/ and used it to run occam2 and derivatives on various machines, and robots including the cell processor in the PS3.
djd20··on At 22 years old, Postgres might just be the most advanced database yet
I would argue thats an issue with your architecture at that point - you may want to use table partitioning at sizes that big, or have some other mechanism in place to be able to lock access while updating such large data sets in one go.

djd20··on Ask HN: What's your favorite way of getting a web app up quickly in 2018?
Pyramid - https://trypyramid.com/ - lightweight like flask but with that little extra that makes life easier (authentication, sqlalchemy integration). Not as heavy/opinionated as django. In fact, would argue, not opinionated at all.. just the right balance.
djd20··on Selecting All Columns Except One in PostgreSQL
Much simpler usint the ORM - you can defer columns:

http://docs.sqlalchemy.org/en/latest/orm/loading_columns.htm...

This is both at the 'object' level, and at the query level for example at the query level: from sqlalchemy.orm import defer, undefer

query = session.query(Book) query = query.options(defer('summary')) query = query.options(undefer('excerpt')) query.all()

You can also group columns for deferral/undeferral.

I use this loads.

djd20··on All Work and No Play: Why Kids Are More Anxious, Depressed (2011)
What kind of helmet have you been wearing that causes loss of hearing and wind noise? That's news to me - I've been cycling with a helmet for 15+ years and have never had a helmet (gone through a bunch of them) that's made any noise. Quite the opposite of you, if I'm on a bike without a helmet I don't feel safe. Been biking in Austria, Poland, London for years.
djd20··on Ask HN: Raw SQL vs. ORM?
This - you really want the best of both worlds. Use an ORM that lets you mix raw sql in where needed, or generate it directly - sqlalchemy.org is a great example of being able to mix and match as needed using the same core library.
