dj2stein9··on The Opa Framework for Javascript
Like in the past, hopefully browser authors and working groups take what is being done in JavaScript frameworks, and makes those tasks easier to implement and platform/browser agnostic.

It is work like this that is the direct reason that web developers today are able to fantastic things in CSS instead of retarded amounts of JavaScript animation and UI programming.

I doubt many of today's developers truly appreciate how amazingly easy it is do stuff like this now:

dj2stein9··on Zynga stock plummets below value of its cash and real estate
This is like feeling sorry for people who work overtime for telemarketers. Oh poor them. Zynga was a cheesy business to begin with, and absolutely every employee there knew it.
dj2stein9··on A better Android emulator
I didn't know this, I'll try it out, thanks!
dj2stein9··on A better Android emulator
If you want a fast way to run Android, you can also use a VirtualBox image, it is significantly faster than the emulator in the SDK:

dj2stein9··on Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and others launch webplatform.org
In all likelihood all three will co-exist, but w3schools will continue to get most of the traffic.
dj2stein9··on Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and others launch webplatform.org
Maybe I want to read the news article describing it first, and then decide if I want to visit webplatform.org or not.
dj2stein9··on Ice Box Pro: The best of Dropbox and Amazon Glacier combined
What's not very clear to me is if my Glacier files are a subset of my Dropbox files, or a separate datastore.

I only have 2GB of Dropbox space because I never upgraded. But I have about 100GB of archive data I'd probably throw into Amazon Glacier if it were convenient.

Do I need to open a 100GB Dropbox account before using IceBox?

dj2stein9··on Mona Lisa in pure CSS
The Da Vinci's of the future will use HTMLx and CSSx instead of paint and canvas.
dj2stein9··on TypeScript: a language for application-scale JavaScript development
Microsoft was so ruthless, and dominating in the 1990's that it will be incredibly difficult to convince any developer that was streamrolled by this company to give them a second chance.
dj2stein9··on The iPad 1
By far the worst thing about this is there will never be an improved web browser on the iPad... ever. Because of Apple ridiculous aversion to altenate web browsers (that don't use the Safari engine) no third party will be able to deliver a new web browser.

Years from now the iPad 1 will still be using outdated HTML5 specs, and old version of the web socket protocol, and will never have new wen technologies added to it. Apple has ensured this device remains technologically frozen in time forever.

dj2stein9··on Someone forgot to renew NodeJS.org
But it's still registered to Ryan Dahl/Joyent, so it probably can still be renewed.
dj2stein9··on Someone forgot to renew NodeJS.org
Usually there's a grace period where the owner can still renew it, and before anyone else can. If the domain actually expired 60 or 90 days ago then they're probably hosed.
dj2stein9··on Open webOS 1.0 is here

The dev tools seemed to be everything that the common web dev wanted.
The dev tools are useless if the platform is a failure. Had HP not prematurely aborted the platform, and a Phonegap port been maintained, then I can hardly see what would have stopped WebOS from being at least modestly successful.
dj2stein9··on Google set to blow open the tablet market later this year with $99 Nexus tablet
I hope all Android OEMs are fully aware that Google has tricked them all into a race to the bottom. That's pretty much been Google's strategy against all its competitors to date.
dj2stein9··on Show HN: Ejecta, A Fast, Open Source JavaScript, Canvas Implementation for iOS
This looks like a great way to build iOS games in HTML5.

If he could to get this to work as an Android project it could be used to build games for OUYA.

dj2stein9··on The front of the iPhone 5 is not flush with the frame
That's there to make sure the screen completely shatters if you bump it against anything.
dj2stein9··on Show HN: 5000 best movies
The scoring system needs to be bell-curve weighted by the release date of the movie.
dj2stein9··on The NSA Wants Hackers, And It Wants Them On Its Side
It's a big job, spying on every US citizen, treating each of them as a "terrorist", and coordinating which secret internment camp to send dissidents.
dj2stein9··on The music classifying nightmare
1) How do you deal with songs that have multiple genres?

In "Singles" I sometimes copy individual MP3's into both Rock and Metal. It comes up less often than you'd think.

2) how do you deal with album that has songs of varying styles?

I just pick the one genre that makes the most sense. As long as I know, or can quickly find which genre an artist is in, that's what matters. How long does it really take to check if I put an AC/DC album in Rock, or Metal?

3) Compilations

I either place it in /Albums/Soundtracks (if it's a soundtrack), or make a "Various Artists" directory in /Albums/Electronic or whichever genre makes sense. Almost all of my compilations are dance or electronic music.

4) I don't understand how you handle singles.... To me it looks like your singles folder is intended for random songs, not to handle actual CDS/CDM style singles

I actually removed most of the EP's and CDS rips from my MP3 collection because I found I never listened to them. I would take the individual MP3's that I really liked and placed those into my /Singles/ directories. Otherwise I could treat them just like I do my Albums.

dj2stein9··on The music classifying nightmare
Use hierarchical directories. They work. I sort my mp3's into two distinct music collections:

  /Albums/
  /Singles/
Then I sort by genre:

  /Albums/%GENRE
  /Singles/%GENRE
In Albums, I then sort by artist, then by album:

  /Albums/%GENRE/%ARTIST/%ALBUM/# - %SONG.mp3
Whereas in Singles, I organize by:

  /Singles/%GENRE/%ARTIST - %SONG.mp3
This system scales very well. I have a 100GB collection and can nail down any song or album in my collection in a few clicks.
dj2stein9··on Apple will no longer license aftermarket power adapters for iPhone 5
High margin, incompatible products are really good business. Apple knows it, and that's why they've been developing incompatible plugs, computers, printers, and software since its existence. They thrive on being incompatible with the rest of the computer and technology industry -- this philosophy was hardwired into Apple's DNA by Steve Jobs right from the beginning.
dj2stein9··on Introducing Qubes 1.0 ("a stable and reasonably secure desktop OS")
Okay so I mistakenly wrote his first name... I don't see how that invalidates what I've said.
dj2stein9··on Introducing Qubes 1.0 ("a stable and reasonably secure desktop OS")
That reminds me of the John Ford quote:

"If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses."
People do not desire better desktop operating systems. They want computers to disappear. It simply does not matter how good this awesome new, secure, desktop OS is because it's built for a world that doesn't exist anymore.
dj2stein9··on SQL vs. NoSQL
Only a fraction of companies can ever really outgrow the capabilities of a fully tuned RDMS. And only a fraction of those will choose HBase over its competitors. And so only people who have worked for such companies have any real experience with the product... and only a fraction of those are vocal about it on the internet.
dj2stein9··on Introducing Qubes 1.0 ("a stable and reasonably secure desktop OS")
Wow, talk about being out of touch with the real world. Developers, especially Linux developers, really need to give up on this whole "Desktop" operating system idea. It's not going to work. It is already dead. And I can hardly believe we are still using these ancient systems for many tasks even today. There is no future in WIMP, and people really need to stop developing these Windows clones already. It was lame 10 years ago. If you are still working on desktop OS clones today, you so are terribly out of touch with the real world there really is no hope for you or your product. Get over it.

Touch-based (and by extension, NUI-based) OS'es and mobile applications are the future. Windows always sucked. Mac OS always sucked. Every desktop OS ever built sucked because it is a horrible way to use a computer. Nobody ever really wanted to use these terrible desktop metaphor systems... they only ever did because they had to.

dj2stein9··on Oracle makes move to kill open source MySQL
As mentioned in the comments see MariaDB (http://mariadb.org/), an open source fork of MySQL from before the Oracle acquisition. Like Hudson, MySQL will live on.
dj2stein9··on Facebook Stock Hits A New Low, Down More Than 50% Since IPO
Facebook stock simply had no business being valued that high to begin with. This was a classic pump and dump operation by the investment firms who took this company public. I thought Facebook was at best fully valued back when Microsoft bought in at 15B valuation, so they absolutely have room to fall further.

dj2stein9··on IBM patents runtime code replacement in web applications
The USPO seems to rubber stamp all software patents.
dj2stein9··on YC RFS: Things Built on Twitter [2009]
When this was written it was bang on. But Twitter is deliberately choosing to go down a different path. I can easily predict Twitter will find itself swimming in the wrong direction within a couple years because the need for an open messaging protocol still exists. That creates opportunity that will be taken advantage of.
