distribot··on Delta pilot sues the airline for allegedly stealing an app he designed
100k seems quite high for a specialized chat app.
distribot··on The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday
I think the worst part about being clinically depressed is how it feels impossible to do a little bit for a few days at a time, and then all my context/momentum/enthusiasm burns up by the time I come back to a project.
distribot··on I requested my photographs from the Department of Homeland Security (2015)
I don't see DHS as a listed agency--which ones would be the most interesting for an average person?
distribot··on Automating programming: AI is transforming the coding of computer programs
Is there any reason to think there's a ceiling on these types of products or a big distinction between different types of engineering? I understand there will still be software engineers to validate, supervise, etc. But what if every team of 10 people today can be reduced to 3? What will that do to the industry? I have two FANG companies on my resume, so I'm pretty confident that if there were a decimation I'd survive, but I think life would be very different.
distribot··on Automating programming: AI is transforming the coding of computer programs
I think some of us have our head in the sand about how disruptive this will be to software engineering as an industry. I find the applied stats-yness of ML really boring, but I also want to hedge against some of these companies creating run away hits that make my current job obsolete.
distribot··on Automating programming: AI is transforming the coding of computer programs
Unrelated but Israel is so cool in terms of technological prowess. A nation of 9 million people and almost every article about cutting edge tech includes them. Really remarkable imo
distribot··on China releases videos of its Zhurong Mars rover
Demographic collapse, irresponsible extractive industry, and in fact many citizens are excluded from the most dynamic parts of the country by the Hukou system.

China is a really interesting place that has had an incredible meteoric rise, but there are problems.

distribot··on What if an AI wins the Nobel Prize for medicine?
That last part doesn't ring true. It's like saying a championship sports team would just chug along without any particular player or coach.
distribot··on Biohackers take aim at big pharma’s stranglehold on insulin
I had a similar upbringing. All the hours of my childhood in the local health and human services offices and WIC nutritional centers turned me off of civil servants and bureaucrats. It felt like they were always condescending and snippy, or pretending my parents' English was way harder to understand than it is, or just delighting in telling us our stuff was out of order.

Looking back they were probably just overworked and exhausted, but man.

Why would NASA not release detailed topology maps? Doesn't that have a lot of value to al researchers around the world?
distribot··on World’s first lab-grown meat facility pumps out 5k burgers per day
I understand this conversation is about Beyond Meat kinda stuff, but it's isn't no for the two oldest and most popular fake meats--tofu and seitan. And yet tofu especially gets beat up in terms of fake vs natural.
distribot··on AWS acquires Wickr
Unless this changed in the last year, this is incorrect. Everyone was pushed to Chime after it was released.

Nothing substantial to add, but I'm reading this book now and I'm finding it pretty interesting. The idea that the way colonial societies were organized and their institutional legacies affect modern nations makes a lot of sense. Cortes vs John Smith. Encomiendas vs settler colonies. And while early American society was extremely unequal, there was a lot more participation in the political process by more people than in most Spanish colonies.
distribot··on How does one get hired by a top cybercrime gang?
Yup, I commented before finishing the text based on where she was arrested.

The point still stands I think. Yes, it's not as flagrant as living in the US. But you'd think a person engaged in this kind of thing would feel reluctant to have a layover in a country that cooperates closely with US law enforcement let alone Miami.

distribot··on How does one get hired by a top cybercrime gang?
Why would a person doing this type of crime reside in the US? I understand quality of life is higher than Russia, but Russia neighbors Latvia--her country of origin. It is confusing to me because if she were there, her activities would have been discovered but she would have had the tacit protection of the state.
distribot··on How does one get hired by a top cybercrime gang?
I think that the difference here is that actors in places with radically different COL can pariticpate. Imagine if a kid in a Northern Triangle country could sell drugs on the street of an American city--the risk/reward is much different. To them, even American minimum wage could be a boon.
distribot··on Incentives in economics are wrong, but how?
I think this elite notion is over-simplified and inaccurate. It suggests that some significant portion of students are at these kind of "walled garden", elite institutions where students become disconnected from the struggles of "real people".

80% of students go to a school where over half of applicants are accepted. Yes, these schools definitely are centers of, frankly, liberal idealism and free-spiritedness. But I think that would be the case in any system where young people are pretty unsupervised and have lots of time to read and study (or party). In my experience though, they aren't factories for elites in the common sense of that word. They're just a reflection of how you need much more training to be competitive in the job market today.

distribot··on Go 1.17 Beta
Is it that bad compared to npm?
distribot··on Go 1.17 Beta
I don't get it I thought k8s was like the perfect match for Go? K8s is even written in Go. I know that doesn't strictly mean it must be easy to use Go, but it seems weird that it wouldn't be K8s best experience.
distribot··on Software is eating the car
If it's really just contained to media content, that's like saying Sirus XM means your car operates on a subscription model.
distribot··on Apple is threatening to remove Fanhouse unless they give 30% of creator earning
I think the current system is too much in Apple's favor, but I imagine they do have to spend a decent chunk of change curating the app store, validating submissions, hosting the apps for download, and maintaining the security infrastructure for developers to sign their apps and users to have confidence in them. This is all value added for developers.
distribot··on Apple is threatening to remove Fanhouse unless they give 30% of creator earning
OnlyFans wouldn't be allowed in the App Store since it is essentially pornography. I am curious if they would given the chance, but they can't
distribot··on A Project of One’s Own
Imo TV is so much worse than the kind of entertainment the person you're replying to listed.

The cable TV I watched as a kid was just garbage. I know it's still all ad driven, but the stuff kids watch now seems much more useful. Roblox is programming.

I don't know if personal guilt or shame is the correct feeling either, but I also don't think OP should feel nothing.

Time and entropy (empires dissolving or population groups migrating) definitely diffuse the responsibility for a horrific act. Of which there are many in history. But this specific thing happened in living memory, was performed by an organization that still exists (a German speaking nation state, with almost the same borders as before), and by people the OP knows personally. In fact, it's a very wealthy nation that OP has gained a lot of advantage from living in. It's subjective and graduated, but I don't think it's been nearly "long" enough that the Holocaust just background noise next to all other events that have happened in human history.

Modern Germany is awesome btw. Really respect how they've reckoned with this awful time in their history.

I don’t understand. It’s a marketing tactic except for this place you’re doing this exact thing with?
distribot··on Google removes its head of diversity after 2007 blog post surfaces
I guess I just disagree with the idea that things which are polarized across party lines are political.

Want to note that I’m pro Israel, think the OP said an awful thing, and I am a progressive.

distribot··on Google removes its head of diversity after 2007 blog post surfaces
This isn’t political though, it’s social. Unless political to you means anything related to the way society is structured and people relate to each other.
distribot··on Google Joins Apple to Opt-out of Mobile Advertising IDs
I don’t see how that is related since nowadays most people use Facebook products from mobile apps. They’d still be hosed right now.
