disqard··on Edge AI for Beginners
Wow, they really do have an edge over the competition there...
disqard··on Jeep pushed software update that bricked all 2024 Wrangler 4xe models
"The contamination caused what is known as a hard alpha inclusion, where a contaminant particle in a metal alloy causes the metal around it to become brittle. The brittle titanium around the impurity then cracked during forging and fell out during final machining, leaving a cavity with microscopic cracks at the edges. For the next 18 years, the crack grew slightly each time the engine was powered up and brought to operating temperature. Eventually, the crack broke open, causing the disk to fail."

I work at a FAANG (but not Apple) -- your characterization is accurate, and I think it's important to not "shoot the messenger" here. The team of UX+SWEs probably made valiant efforts to reify some "vision" from a higher-up who cannot be contradicted.

Nice find! Thanks for sharing.

There's always "old wine in new bottle", but this latest take by Apple seems a bit too gratuitous.

Time will tell whether it's a flop -- I'm inclined to believe this is evidence that they're on par with MS now, and their solidly creative streak is over.

Looks useful! What would it take to add support for (totally random example :D) Harper's Magazine?
disqard··on Blender 4.5 LTS
Thank you for replying!
disqard··on Blender 4.5 LTS
Thank you for sharing your experience!

Would you mind sharing a bit more about your workflow? Do you export to obj/stl? What slicer do you use?

Five years is a decent amount of Time, and I'm sure you have much hard-won knowledge (and gotchas) to share.

(Personally, I'm stuck on the mental block of "I know I should just get and learn Fusion360" but I cannot bring myself to knowingly tie myself to a subscription-based piece of rentware.)

Thanks in advance!

Edit to add: my motivation is 100% to use this for 3d printing.

disqard··on Founder sentenced to seven years in prison for fraudulent sale to JPMorgan
Reading Kornetzke's summing up of America, this fragment reminded me of SV and VC culture in particular:

"greed exalted as ambition"

You can google "It is America’s shadow made flesh" to find the entire passage.

disqard··on Tesla influencers tried coast-to-coast self-driving, hit debris before 60 miles
I'm surprised this isn't flagged yet.

Musk's army must've missed this one.

Why is this flagged?
disqard··on I ditched Docker for Podman
Does anyone here have more than "initial impressions" of systemd-nspawn? It seems chronically overlooked in these sorts of threads.
disqard··on What the interns have wrought, 2025
Jane Street is in hot water in India:

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5y0zgrevl1o

Basically, SEBI investigated Jane Street's trading on January 17, 2024, when the firm allegedly made about $86 million in a single day through what regulators term "intra-day index manipulation."

HFT and Ads are two places which (currently) print money, so it vacuums up all the talent, and puts it to use growing their already-huge revenue streams.

disqard··on US retail giants raise prices due to tariffs
I've come to the conclusion that we're living in a post-Truth society.

Thus, "tariffs" can be made to mean anything.

This looks like a different take on 4chan, and the content resembles the scrawls on the bathroom wall of a pub.
disqard··on What is going on right now?
You're not wrong about that.

What ends up happening is that humans get "woven" into the architecture/processes, so that people with pagers keep that mess going even though it really should not be running at that scale.

"Throw one away" rarely happens.

disqard··on The White House and the Agreement Between Nvidia and AMD
You forgot:

4. If the POTUS does it, it's not a crime.

and

5. It's for National Security -- surely you don't want us giving our AI technology away to China without extracting something in return?

There are many ways to handle this -- just watch Faux News, if this ever rises above the threshold of the ambient craziness and becomes "newsworthy".

disqard··on Claude is the drug, Cursor is the dealer
I half-suspect the Rabbit M1 and the Humane AI Pin were onto something that could've been the "iPhone of AI", but because they botched it so completely, no one will want to invest (time, money, effort, resources) into exploring that path for several years.
disqard··on AI is propping up the US economy
James Mickens named-and-shamed this viewpoint, which he called "Technological Manifest Destiny".

Others have observed and pointed out his prescience before:

disqard··on Job-seekers are dodging AI interviewers
Not all countries are at 2.24 -- USA is at 1.62, so whether correlation or causation, many developed countries are nowhere near the replacement rate.

disqard··on Telo MT1
You're both right!

I noticed the lack of a "crumple zone" the instant I saw the image.

...and a moment later, I also realized it's usually a solid engine block that sits there. I shudder to think of what actually happens when that zone "crumples".

Back to the Telo MT1, it's great that they redesigned it from the ground up, around it being an EV -- it's like the Phelps Tractor having reins, and then somebody asking "why does it need to have reins if there's no horse?"

disqard··on OpenAI raises $8.3B at $300B valuation
> Google does not really own the complete AI stack, NVDA is extracting a lot of the value there.

...not sure what you're implying.

Google most definitely has their own stack (spanning hardware-to-software) for AI. Gemini was trained on in-house TPUs:

disqard··on Microsoft Introduces 'Copilot Mode' in Edge
Your description was hilarious!

Thank you for the laughs :D

OT: I wonder if we'll see some "core personalities" that are innate to each mega-LLM (Claude, O3, Copilot, Gemini)... methinks this has comedic potential.

disqard··on Young graduates are facing an employment crisis
"Looting" is an apt description of the short-termism we're seeing in the tech industry.
disqard··on Mira Murati’s AI startup Thinking Machines valued at $12B in early-stage funding
You are right! Just like how a certain contingent flags posts that discuss any appalling misuse of technology under the pretext that "oh, it's politics, etc.", you should do the same for these scammy news items: flag + hide.

I don't know that it'll work, but it is worth trying.

Indeed, the power of McLuhan's "We become what we behold" is not to be underestimated.

It's why Fox News works, it's why "flood the zone" is a shrewd tactic, and why "alternative facts" was Yet Another Milepost along our journey to the full-blown post-truth America of today.

disqard··on Microsoft to Cut 9k Workers in Second Wave of Major Layoffs
I think you're spot-on!

It was a first, and then the entire collection of CEOs showcased their herd mentality by jumping on that bandwagon. It's kinda like the anti-poaching collusion that happened... gosh, 10 years ago!

https://www.cnet.com/tech/tech-industry/apple-google-others-...

...only, this time, there's some bullshit "economic headwinds" arguments being advanced as reasons for these layoffs.

I remember experiencing actual belt-tightening in 2008-09, where it was disgraceful-but-necessary-to-save-the-company. It's nothing like that this time around.
