dismal2··on Hello, World
This is wrong, you don't understand how "burnout" works.
dismal2··on A New Way to Promote Your App on Google Play
actually, its always been about advertising!
dismal2··on Paris night drone mystery deepens
yeah just noticed this, maybe url was a bit different and allowed dup. can a mod delete this?
dismal2··on How an Undocumented Immigrant from Mexico Became a Star at Goldman Sachs
Wonder is she was paying any taxes? This whole article feels strange to me, if I slipped through the cracks and got luck I wouldn't be shouting on the rooftops about it.
dismal2··on Online Porn Could Be the Next Big Privacy Scandal
Of course it's deniable, just say the person is clearly trying to blackmail you, or that you watched that one but not that truly terrible one. Also who cares. Now if they could hack into your camera while you watch and you happen to be a person in the public eye, that could turn into a short lived manufactured controversy that gossip sites and cable news live on.
dismal2··on Introduction to Facebook's Flux architecture
thanks! missed that,
dismal2··on Introduction to Facebook's Flux architecture
Love going through live examples to learn, thanks for sharing!

But, I can get it to render (after doing npm/bower install then running gulp), but can't get it to actually do anything. Everything looks right but clicking around and nothing happens? Anyone else running into this?

dismal2··on As Office Space Shrinks, So Does Privacy for Workers
you have a sense of privacy in public, a lot more than in a space with a set group of people that you have to constantly interact with. in a cafe nobody cares how "busy" you look, you're just getting stuff done, in an office it quickly becomes about appearances, or leaving only after your boss left even if you're no longer productive, etc. basically in a public space people can "judge" what you're doing but it doesn't matter while in a private space people "judge" you and it matters.
dismal2··on As Office Space Shrinks, So Does Privacy for Workers
because it's a natural instinct, your "nothing to hide" type argument can't trump thousands of years of evolution
dismal2··on How my life was changed when I began caring about the people I did not hire
the questions you asked or the way you asked them were answered in a way that made it appear to you that that person couldn't program. not saying that was the case, but just want to add that line of thinking too.
dismal2··on The Invasion of America: New Visualizations of Native American Dispossession
because obviously the division terms would actually be upheld and followed, hah!
dismal2··on The Secret to the Uber Economy Is Wealth Inequality
a. not everybody needs a car.

b. the amount you drive even with a lengthy commute is nowhere close to what a person driving 8 hours a day 5+ days a week does. the amount you spend on gas alone is huge never mind maintenance and having the right insurance for driving that many miles (many drivers don't and can get totally screwed over if anything happens and the insurance company finds out they don't have the right coverage).

dismal2··on The Secret to the Uber Economy Is Wealth Inequality
Are you serious? Imagine if you are a programmer but your computer takes an obscene amount of maintenance (like a car: tires, oil changes, preventative maintenance) to keep it running so that you can keep freelancing as a programmer. If you didn't factor this into your costs of being a "freelancer" you would be an idiot.
dismal2··on A Brief History of Web Design for Designers
There are still Dreamweaver like tools, they are just terrible and produce completely unmaintainable code that doesn't work with anything other than simple static sites. If anything tools like Dreamweaver/Frontpage were made obsolete by Wordpress and services like Squarespace, etc.

Also, I'm not sure what you are really referring to in your first paragraph or what the fact that you can only rent Dreamweaver (true for the entire Adobe Suite) has to do with anything.

dismal2··on The Open-Office Trap
> The whole business about having to waste an hour to get back into the zone after an interruption is, frankly, total BS.

there's your opinion and then there's science which actually goes out and sees how the real world works (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interruption_science)

dismal2··on The Tech Worker Shortage Doesn't Really Exist
you spent almost 6 weeks (30-45min per screen) hiring ONE candidate for a remedial webdev position?! something other than the candidates is wrong here.
dismal2··on EIZO Announces Monitor with 1920x1920 Resolution
At that size something like 2880x2880 would be more "modern"
dismal2··on A Question
if the future is instagram and twitter, you can keep it
dismal2··on Rejected for a Job at the Container Store
let go of frustration and what, die hungry in the streets?
dismal2··on Why the grocery store of the future never happened (2011)
there are no stores in the future, it's a dated model, that seems pretty obvious even in 2011
dismal2··on The Art of Not Working at Work
I'm reading this at work to not work.
dismal2··on San Francisco Design Agencies Feeling the Squeeze
I think part of the reason for the in house move is just tighter integration with product and engineering. Design firms just aren't technologically sophisticated enough for a lot of the "design" being done in the bay area.
dismal2··on Assange: Google Is Not What It Seems
You are arguing semantics and I'm talking about what the NSA is actually capable of. Please read this paragraph:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XKeyscore#Capabilities

dismal2··on Assange: Google Is Not What It Seems
Please read up on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XKeyscore

It actually does what you claim was Greenwald's fantasy/lunacy

dismal2··on Assange: Google Is Not What It Seems
I believe he is referring to XKeyscore, not PRISM, which is as insane as it sounds, unless you believe the NSAs denial.
dismal2··on Assange: Google Is Not What It Seems
Please let us know how it has been debunked.
dismal2··on Wake Up, Europe
> It is high time for the members of the European Union to wake up and behave as countries indirectly at war. They are better off helping Ukraine to defend itself than having to fight for themselves. One way or another, the internal contradiction between being at war and remaining committed to fiscal austerity has to be eliminated. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Just a way out of the bullshit austerity programs instated in many European countries that helps the globalists instead of people in their respective countries. Yay to being part of the EU!

dismal2··on Dreaming a Different Apollo
Current technology will always look archaic from the future, I hope in 20 years we get to say something like: I can't believe we didn't build our spacecraft out of some kind of super space crystals!

I see things like the Apollo program as a massively expensive (and yes, wasteful) R&D program. Private space corps, unless they reach some kind of massive scale, will have a hard time justifying throwing enough money at something for real innovation. They will continue to focus on getting satellites up there a bit cheaper than the other guy.

The reason people (geeks especially) love to rah-rah the space program is because it is a wonderful form of waste. Instead of bailing out a corrupt financial system, or spying on it's own citizens, or building some kind of doomsday weapon, we could have our Star Trek fantasy and maybe find some really cool innovations while we are at it.

dismal2··on Dreaming a Different Apollo
According to your argument, technologically, we are never ready for anything, so we should do nothing. Jumping into the fire when you're half way there is a hell of a learning experience. So you would start a space base for the same reason, the experience. Imagine what would be learned when you actually have to solve the problems that come with living in space instead of just conceptually complaining about them. I'm sure a lot of things would come up that nobody has predicted before, and we would come up with solutions, some of which might have profound technological impact further down the line.
