dismal2··on Millennials Are Poorer Than Their Parents, Investigation Finds
Yeah, just take a good, long, hard pull on those bootstraps and everything will be fine. Social change has to happen sometimes, and sometimes there is a reason to be outraged.
dismal2··on Play: A P2P distributed torrent site that's impossible to shut down
I thought most isps already do bandwidth shaping and p2p throttling? Most serious pirates have a seedbox which avoids this problem.
dismal2··on Tech workers are increasingly looking to leave Silicon Valley
Because jobs aren't flexible. What I mean is that the people that could move somewhere more "fun" or "interesting" because they could get a relatively high paying job to cover the rent did, and there's no reason for them to stay if those jobs disappear. I could imagine a lot of "reverse gentrification" in insane rent markets like SF or NYC.
dismal2··on Tech workers are increasingly looking to leave Silicon Valley
What I'm saying is that the ones who could move did, and if stuff gets bad again, they will move back to where their parents live to become part of the "Why Bother" generation (per that article, though I think it should be called the "Who Can Afford This Rent" generation). Just from personal observation, a lot of people I bump into along the major west coast cities are not originally from there.
dismal2··on Tech workers are increasingly looking to leave Silicon Valley
Don't worry, it will happen naturally when the current tide recedes. I think a lot of older people underestimate how flexible young people, especially ones who graduated into the financial crisis, are.

If you have a smartphone and think you have any sort of privacy, you're delusional

dismal2··on The Fed Wants to Test How Banks Would Handle Negative Rates
A couple trillion dollars was used to buy up securities that are realistically worth $0 in pretty much every timeframe for 100 cents on the dollar, cleaning up bank balance sheets. This allowed them to continue to speculate on all sorts of things, like housing, commodities, etc, looking for returns (some of it probably saw its way to silicon valley too). It was passed on as easy money to corporations, who mostly used it to do stock buy backs that pretty much do nothing for "the economy" while lifting the stock market.

As for employment, if you actually look at the numbers, its people over 55 who can't afford to retire doing service jobs. The participation rate is trash and young people are fucked.

dismal2··on Paul Krugman Reviews ‘The Rise and Fall of American Growth’ by Robert J. Gordon
If anything self driving cars will be most disruptive in trucking and delivery and in the process destroy the economy of middle america [1]. As for everyone having an on demand car, it has been stated here a number of times that most people still all need to get to work around the same time. If anything, automation and robots are a race to the bottom if we stick with capitalism in its current form.

dismal2··on How to Get Good at Chess, Fast (2013)
I think star craft was, I think DOTA like games are much simpler, but are easier to pick up and understand.

dismal2··on Flexbox Froggy: A game for learning CSS flexbox
Ah, makes sense
dismal2··on Flexbox Froggy: A game for learning CSS flexbox
Avoided using flexbox up to now and overall it seems pretty great for some layout tasks.

I do wonder about the point of the `order` property, would anyone ever want to mess with this? It seems like something that should absolutely be in your application code, either client-side javascript or server-side. Using it seems like it would make a project harder to maintain and understand.

Maybe the current set of unicorn startups are just very clever financial inventions to get returns in todays crazy financial world of ZIRP and never ending QE.
dismal2··on Marijuana exposure in utero has lifelong consequences in mice
I don't see why they didn't just have them consume food with oil in it, this seems like a highly unnatural delivery mechanism.

Relevant comment from Ars:

> Interesting to note... If you look at the study

> "THC (THC Pharm) was diluted in 0.9% NaCl (saline) solution containing 3% (vol/vol) DMSO and 2% (vol/vol) Tween-80 and administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) at a final dose of 3 mg/kg to pregnant females for 5 consecutive days, from E12.5 to E16.5. Control mice were injected with vehicle solution."

> DMSO is TOXIC to developing brains. Its actually recommended not to use it in studies because it causes too much damage.

> "The in vitro results suggest avoiding the use of BeOH (which also is more toxic than the other solvents in the in vivo test) and DMSO and using PEG400, EtOH and DMF even though the latter induced a body weight decrease in the B6D2F1 mouse strain. "

> It would seem as though they purposefully paired the THC with a solvent that would cause the relevant brain abnormalities.

I just feel like I've been on a lot of unicorn hunt interviews recently (casually looking at interesting opportunities, currently pretty happily employed)

>Sometimes you'll get stuck. Relax. It doesn't mean you've failed.

Actually, in my experience you might as well walk out the door then and stop wasting everyones time. Has anyone ever experienced something different?

dismal2··on How Sick Is the Stock Market?
Stock market is probably least safe place for investment right now. Why do you think real estate has gone crazy in the past 5 years? Lots of people that I know who manage their money are almost entirely in cash and many of them avoided the carnage last week.
