dirtydroog··on Must, Should, Don't Care: TCP Conformance in the Wild
HTTP is in a similar sorry state. For example, it offers pipelining support but nobody can reliably use it because it probably won't work on some forgotten about machine somewhere on the path.
dirtydroog··on How Gov.uk Notify reliably sends text messages to users
Is it this bit?

I'd like to clarify that the remark about load handling was aimed at your SMS gateway providers.

That surprised me too. We handle that amount of HTTP requests per second, and you don't really need a lot of infrastructure to do it. Something is wrong here. I bet it's all synchronous code and capacity is being wasted on waiting. Also, I doubt they're tailoring each individual SMS so there are likely to be efficiencies to be had here too.
dirtydroog··on How we recovered $300k of Bitcoin
Actually, being involved in ad tech can get you involved in some really cool tech. It's an incredibly fast-paced industry, lots of parallels to HFT.

And yes, everyone in the industry knows that ads don't work, you have all the ad blockers, etc.

> * Missing operations such as popcount, cttz, simultaneous div/rem, or rotates.

gcc/clang offers builtins for most of these. And if you give the compiler the right march parameter it'll quite likely turn your hand-rolled code for these operations into the x64 instruction you're targeting. Try it on Compiler Explorer.

dirtydroog··on “C is how the computer works” is a dangerous mindset for C programmers
While the presence of UB is annoying, but necessary, the real issue is that compiler writers use it as a means of performing optimisations instead of warnings. So you end up with a really efficient, but broken, program.
dirtydroog··on Linux 5.6
Unless you mean something different... yes you can. I'm using it right now.

dirtydroog··on Khan Academy requests for donations as their servers are at 250% normal load
There is something distasteful about them wanting high pay and extra donations to cover an unseen expense.

Google given them $10m per year. Are they on GCP? Are they pissing money away on MemoryStore instances? Turn off load balancer logs. Are their servers running javascript?
dirtydroog··on Khan Academy requests for donations as their servers are at 250% normal load
Why do you say that? In my company our cloud bill is the largest expense after salaries. We're constantly watching those costs as they can get out of control quite quickly
dirtydroog··on How is the Linux kernel tested?
You port the driver to Rust, obviously. Then run the driver in a docker container that communicates with a serverless unit testing framework written in node.js va JSON commands.

It prevents others fingerprinting, not Google though. Isn't there that x-Client-Data header than chrome only sends to Google domains?
