dirtydroog··on German government to bail Lufthansa out of bankruptcy with nearly $10B state aid
Historically, only if the company wasn't French. Now it seems it's a free-for-all, unsurprisingly.
dirtydroog··on CEO of Banjo admitted to being a Neo-Nazi skinhead in his youth
What industry?
dirtydroog··on Better C – A subset of D Programming Language
Bingo! Writing a template library is totally different to writing an application.
dirtydroog··on Better C – A subset of D Programming Language
+1, I cringed when Herb Sutter released the 'Almost Always Auto' C++ presentation on YouTube. Sure, auto has its place, and I personally use it, but I just knew that less experience devs would go nuts with it, and it'd only make their lives easier for a short time.
dirtydroog··on Mastering systemd: Securing and sandboxing applications and services
Are you suggesting that a system's services should be run in individual docker containers?
dirtydroog··on Teleforking a Process onto a Different Computer
They seem to be different problems though, as that LWN article suggests. It's probably easier to checkpoint/restore an entire image's state than an individual process' state.

But even calls like gettimeofday() work differently when running on hypervisors than they do when running on bare metal

dirtydroog··on Blurred rounded rectangles
It reminds me of the techniques used in railways to smooth the transition from straights to bends.

dirtydroog··on An audio app that has consumed my life
That was a very long advert.
dirtydroog··on C++ type casting with example for C developers
I suggested an underlying_cast function that converts a typed-enum to its underlying type. It's quite useful for things like sending typed enums to streams.
dirtydroog··on How to speed up the Rust compiler in 2020
Isn't this a bit fragile though? It's totally fine as long as you own and understand the code. But what's to stop someone new and/or inexperienced from coming along and violating the 'already proven' claim? How will you know?

Isn't there a risk of Rust code having "Don't ever change this" comments?

dirtydroog··on How to speed up the Rust compiler in 2020
In modern C++, inline is used to prevent 'multiple-definitons' errors, not to actually inline the function.
dirtydroog··on Stripe records user movements on its customers' websites
What user data doesn't google sell?

dirtydroog··on Testing Memory Allocators on Real World Work Loads (2018)
Is Intel's TBB allocator no good? I rarely see it in comparison tests
dirtydroog··on For Donald Knuth, good coding is synonymous with beautiful expression
Things like branch prediction, caches, instruction pipelining? Not really. People want the algorithm, not a difficult to translate implementation.
dirtydroog··on For Donald Knuth, good coding is synonymous with beautiful expression
Totally agree. It doesn't help at all. Pseudocode would have benn sufficient. Fake machine code? Nope.
dirtydroog··on Embedding Binary Objects in C
C++ has a proposal for std::embed

dirtydroog··on SoftBank expects $24B in losses from Vision Fund, WeWork and OneWeb
They bought ARM. Quite a good investment I believe.
dirtydroog··on Tell HN: C Experts Panel – Ask us anything about C
Maybe not.
dirtydroog··on As YouTube traffic soars, YouTubers say pay is plummeting
If Youtube can't make money from you why would they host your content?
dirtydroog··on As YouTube traffic soars, YouTubers say pay is plummeting
If you realise you're now locked into the Apple ecosystem don't you want to do anything about it? It's very risky, it is your point of weakness.
dirtydroog··on Erase your darlings: immutable infrastructure for mutable systems
Well, going by the functional programming crowd's take on immutability, you just have to buy a new laptop each time.
dirtydroog··on Why It’s So Hard to Create New Processors
What a strange comment.
dirtydroog··on The software industry's greatest sin: hiring
> I want to see, in the flesh, how scared and uncomfortable you are at seeing a candidate write original solutions to real problems.

I've no doubt your code is the best in the world (have you a github repo?), but with that attitude you'd be shown the door quite soon.

dirtydroog··on Quantifying the Adpocalypse
Have you not been watching the stock market for the past three weeks?
dirtydroog··on Make Linux Fast Again (2019)
What has that got to do with anything?
dirtydroog··on Why we do machine learning engineering with YAML, not notebooks
Reads like someone was forced by their marketing team to write an article about anything at all.
dirtydroog··on Containers vs. Zones vs. Jails vs. VMs (2017)
For my workload I've struggled to see the advantage containers would give me. Maybe someone here can convince me, rather than the current justification of 'docker all the things'.

We have servers, they handle a lot of traffic. It's the only thing running on the machines and takes over all the resources of the machine. It will need all the RAM, and all 16 vCPUs are at ~90%.

It's running on GCP. To rollout we have a jenkins job that builds a tag, creates a package (dpkg) and builds an image. There's another jenkins job that deploys the new image to all regions and starts the update process, autoscaling and all that.

Can containers help me here?

dirtydroog··on Io_uring By Example: cat, cp and a web server with io_uring
Does it support timers / timeouts?

Thanks for the article, it's very appealing to start to play around with this.
